WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.

Do you have access to The Journey to Separate but Equal: Madame Decuir's Quest for Racial Justice in the Reconstruction Era? Seems to have just been published last month (!), so that's exciting. Eddie891, Feel free to add as much or as little as you like—would not be stepping on my toes in the slightest. The 1885 statute looks like a fun research project too; I'll have a look at the sources you found and might pull something together in draftspace, or another stub, that we can work on whenever convenient. I don't think I have access to that book but yes, it's a crazy coincidence that it just came out! The funny things one finds looking in old online books: right after the bill was passed at 1:00 in the morning on 4 July 1885, Richard John Cartwright said "It is the 4th of July, a fitting day to disfranchise your countrymen." Following an RfC, consensus was found that third party appeals are allowed but discouraged.
The 2021 Desysop Policy RfC was closed with no consensus. Consensus was found in a previous RfC for a community based desysop procedure, though the procedure proposed in the 2021 RfC did not gain consensus.

Technical news

The user group oversight will be renamed to suppress. This is for technical reasons. You can comment at T112147 if you have objections.

Arbitration

The community consultation on the Arbitration Committee discretionary sanctions procedure was closed, and an initial draft based on feedback from the now closed consultation is expected to be released in early June to early July for community review.

Close of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gigantic prime

A pure technicality - nothing in mainspace turns on this - but why did you close this AfD as a redirect, not a merge? There were more merge opinions than redirect opinions, and no delete opinions after Trovatore first wondered about possible other homes for this material. — Charles Stewart (talk) 14:47, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Numerically, delete and redirect !votes (functionally equivalent) had the most support (and to my eyes the best thought out rationales). The users who commented in favor of deletion before are competent users who probably thought through their comment before posting it-- AGF leads me to assume the Delete !voter's considered ATD's before !voting. Indeed, at least David was later pinged by yourself, and is fully capable of changing his vote. The later two users commenting for redirection specifically eludicated why they felt a redirect more beneficial than a merge a mention is all they deserve and never had widespread adoption within mathematics. Two of the three 'merge' !votes lacked comparable rationales. Hopefully that helps explain somewhat. Eddie891 ^Talk _Work 16:31, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

Welcome, subscribers, to the third Discontent Content newsletter! Discontent Content is a newsletter aiming to collate and improve Wikipedia articles in need of more eyes and hands to get them in shape. Its unique trimodal structure allows editors to work where they feel comfortable -- with stubs and starts needing to be brought to standard, mid-quality articles with Good or Featured potential, or quality-assessed articles needing help to maintain their status.

Category 1

Articles in this category are those that need to be brought up to a minimum quality standard. Some will be stubs; others will be longer articles that nonetheless have significant concerns putting them far below B- or C-class adequacy.

This issue's Category 1 articles are:

Gambling in Nevada: An unusual move -- a redirect? But if you look at the history, you'll see why. This sweeping and expansive topic about the home of Reno and Las Vegas was recently converted to a redirect due to its almost complete lack of useful content. Nonetheless, this subject is bursting with potential and can have a full article written about it.
SpongeBob SquarePants: Original Theme Highlights: This recent AfD survivor was the first soundtrack written for the popular series. More unorthodox, for a children's animation album, it features songs by Pantera and Ween and was given a vinyl re-release in 2016 for the...ironic market? Certainly some market. There's a fair amount of coverage here to write a solid article on.
Death by misadventure: A surprisingly major topic to be a one-paragraph stub, this is a legal and colloquial term both. The article is currently sourced in whole to a single page in a single book!

Category 2

Articles in this category, while in better current shape than Category 1, are still missing something. They have the potential to be truly high-quality content, and may have been at one point. With work, they can be brought up to dizzying heights.

This issue's Category 2 articles are:

Rope (film): Hitchcock's classic attempt to shoot an entire film in a single shot, Rope is both a significant note in cinematic history and, in recent years, conceptualized as an important piece of Hays Code-era gay cinema. It's a good watch, and the article should be just as solid. Currently it's a C-class with some unsourced content and an overreliance on block quotes.
Rachel Pollack: One of the major occult writers of the 20th and 21st centuries (a book of hers is prominently involved in my quixotic "bring the Major Arcana to FT" plan), not to mention a significant fiction and comics writer collaborating with names such as Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison, Pollack's article has quite a bit of room for improvement to quality-assessed levels. Though her article's lead is short and the work as a whole underreferenced, plenty of opportunities exist to improve it.
Narrative paradigm: Despite this article's High or Top importance across multiple wikiprojects, it's in a sorry state. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was subjected to a WikiEd course some time back. Significant potential lies within the idea that all human communication is narrative; the article must be accordingly strong.

Category 3

Articles in this category have been assessed through a content review process in the past, but may require work to be brought up to current GA/FA standard. Editors can help bring them to a level where the star or plus near their names can once again shine.

This issue's Category 3 articles are:

Jaime King: This GA on a famous model of the 1990s has been recommended for GAR. Unreferenced sections and low-quality references are a problem for this BLP.
Dartmouth College: This FA is at FARC and on the brink of delisting, but the issues mentioned -- accessibility, WP:LEADCITE compliance, and overreliance on primary sources -- are far from insurmountable, and an editor could certainly polish off this star.
Tamil language: Another FARC, this is the native language of 75 million people (including my own stepmother) and the language of one of the world's great classical traditions. It's afflicted by a lack of sourcing and particularly issues with inline citations.

Positioning theory

Hello Eddie891, I hope everything has been going well at your end. I came here because I needed your advice. There is an image on positioning theory, which was uploaded by the editor who started the article (Ping: Itsjessjj). It is captioned as "Positioning triangle adapted from Van Langenhove & Harré (1999a p.18)", and licensed under CC Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0). My understanding of copyright law is limited but would one not require the permission of Van Langenhove and/or Harré in order to upload this material on Wikipedia? Or is it okay to upload a specific excerpt from a paper for illustrative purposes (but this would require a different license)? The Most Comfortable Chair All is well over here-- winter is finally over, and I've found some really rewarding articles to work on. My initial understanding was be that the image is "adapted" in the sense that it's Itsjessjj's own work based on the content of the paper-- as you note in your second comment. If this is the case, I think it would be fine given it attributes the source. If it is a screenshot it would be copyrighted and could not be uploaded under CC BY SA 4.0 without the authors themselves releasing it. It's unfortunately hard to tell without the source at hand. Nikkimaria may be able to advise and correct if I've given you completely wrong information :P (image copyright isn't my strongest suit, either). I read Walt Whitman and Abraham Lincoln recently, and it was a great read. I learned a lot. Thank you for your response, it has been reassuring. My concern stemmed from the image's summary, which attributed the work to Van Langenhove & Harré, dated 1999 (summary of the other image in the article for comparison). The Most Comfortable Chair Yeah, it's hard to tell whether the image is an adaption or copvio without access to the source. The summary would suggest it's taken directly from it, but the title suggest it's an adaption. I'm glad you enjoyed WW and AL-- I'm slowly working it up towards FA, though I've been informed by an editor I greatly respect it needs significant work. Category 1

Articles in this category are those that need to be brought up to a minimum quality standard. Some will be stubs; others will be longer articles that nonetheless have significant concerns putting them far below B- or C-class adequacy.

This issue's Category 1 articles are:

Lineage (anthropology): A shocking subject to be a sourceless stub, this Vital 4 obviously has so much more to write about than its three sentences. In this state, even a basic improvement would do a ton.
Police memorabilia collecting: Survived AfD not long ago, with plenty of sources given in the discussion to use in the article. "Further reading" may in particular be of use.
Koror City: Palau may be a small island nation, but having its largest city by far be a stub is unacceptable. (We've managed to write much more about it over at Wikivoyage, where it's guide-class and about to make a Main Page appearance.) Vital 5 with a healthy couple hundred pageviews a day, the widespread use of English in its native land makes it a more accessible topic than editors afraid of working in countries they're unfamiliar with might worry.

Category 2

Articles in this category, while in better current shape than Category 1, are still missing something. They have the potential to be truly high-quality content, and may have been at one point. With work, they can be brought up to dizzying heights.

This issue's Category 2 articles are:

List of premature obituaries: A former FL, an eccentric and popular topic, and a refreshing change from the sports statistics and "list of awards received by X" that populate FLC. This list was demoted in 2009 for sourcing concerns, which even at the time were mentioned as potentially fixable.
War: Let's just jump straight into the Overtopics, shall we? This Vital 2 really shows what "Top-importance to the whole encyclopedia" means. Currently B-class -- more B- in my estimate, maybe -- it stands out that non-editor readers on the talk page have qualms with the scope, in particular omissions they expected to find.
The Picture of Dorian Gray: Once GA, now C. ~~Still relatable.~~ This seminal work of literature can certainly be returned to where it was.

Category 3

Byzantine Empire: From the metapedian perspective, this is perhaps our most important FA -- the oldest, promoted in 2001 (older than some of this newsletter's subscribers!), to retain FA status unbroken to the present day. Speaking exopedianly, it's still decidedly vital, with nearly three million page views in the last year. FAR was suggested late last year; it hasn't been brought to the chopping block yet, but an article this important both inside and outside of the project deserves to remain in top shape.
Underoath: This GA is recommended for GAR, with complaints about long-unaddressed maintenance tags and sections in dire need of updates. The article gets hundreds of views a day and is translated across plenty of projects.
Acute myeloid leukemia: Medical articles aren't scary! Really! They're not! If I can work on them, so can you! That aside, this FA was given a FAR notice in January. There are sourcing concerns, conveniently assisted by sources left on the talk page. Non-editor readers on the talk have raised concerns about inaccurate prognostic statements.

Results of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chuggaaconroy

TL;DR: I would like to restore the YouTuber Chuggaaconroy’s Wikipedia page as I have found several new sources that hopefully should be sufficient enough to establish his notability, and I would like to ask if the original article can be draftified/userfied for me to edit it.

Hello Eddie891, I'm PantheonRadiance. I'm messaging you today to discuss the circumstances surrounding the Articles for Deletion on Emile Rosales-Birou (Chuggaaconroy), a popular Let's Player and internet personality. Due to school obligations, I never got the chance to participate in this discussion, and I wish to discuss this with you now. Since the Deletion Review stated that I should discuss with the closer first, I have three points about the AfD I wanted to talk to you about.

1: One of the participants voted Keep, citing an article from the New York Times which mentions him. However, another user argued that the article didn't count because it was a trivial mention. From what I understand about a trivial mention, this is erroneous; as opposed to a basic one-sentence mention, there were four paragraphs dedicated to talking about Chuggaaconroy, from his start on YouTube as a kid, to the content he produces along with his subscriber and view count, his contact with YouTube itself and his videos containing occasionally rough language, and how his videos were discovered through the site's recommendations. From Wikipedia's policies the subject doesn't have to be the main topic of the article so long as the coverage of it is reasonably in-depth. The Sydney Morning Herald also published the same article too.

2: In addition to the rebuttal, two other participants stated that they couldn't find any reliable and significant sources on Chuggaaconroy, so I spent the past month looking for various other sources. Along with NY Times, he has also been featured on Wired, The Atlantic, the Irish Times, Independent.co.uk and even Nasdaq - all of them reliable outlets. For Wired, there were three articles which mention Chuggaaconroy - one which significantly goes in detail on his YouTube career along with some details on his personal life, one mentioning his revenue hit and content ID claims, and one from 2010 on his YouTube partnership with The Game Station/Polaris. The first article especially qualifies as in-depth coverage, and coupled with the two smaller mentions, these should contribute to his notability. Here are the rest of the articles.

The Atlantic mentions him as an example of a Let’s Player who has made a living off of his YouTube videos, citing his subscriber count as of March 2014, him living in Atlanta, Georgia and the approximate salary he makes from his videos.
The Irish Times article which talks about family-friendly gaming channels cites Chuggaaconroy as an example of one whose content is oriented for younger audiences not into Minecraft, the games he plays and his sub/view count.
An article from Independent mentioned two videos from his Super Luigi Galaxy series (Episode 29 and 30 [Part ⅓]) as one of the most-viewed of the week in October 2010, placing it at 8 and 9. There was also another one which listed one on his videos again, showing how his videos have received coverage from the outlet. These two articles should at the very least partially demonstrate his notability as a popular gaming YouTuber.
Also, this 2013 Nasdaq article mentions his view/subscriber count, his content related to Nintendo-based Let’s Plays, and a picture of a tweet from one of his fans, showing him as an example of a Let’s Player affected by Nintendo’s (old) content ID policy.

Admittedly the Atlantic, Irish Times, Independent and Nasdaq sources are a bit scant, but when combined with the NY Times and Wired articles they should establish him as a notable YouTuber. If not, then…

3: Out of curiosity I also searched his YouTube channel name on Google Scholar and managed to find a few scholarly articles which go into detail about the Let’s Plays he produces along with his influence.

This scholarly article comes from the University of Brasilia and goes into great detail on his video and commentary style. Specifically it states that Chuggaaconroy makes LPs of games at least two years after release mainly of Nintendo games, how he typically goes into research and production on each game he makes a video series on, and how he takes the time to show 100% of the game content available (all bosses, items, quests, Easter eggs and so on). It also lists his subscriber count as of 2017 (1.1 million) in comparison to other Let’s Play channels.
The second article can be used to create a section for "The Runaway Guys," Chuggaaconroy’s collaborative YouTube channel with fellow gaming personalities Jonathan "ProtonJonSA" Wheeler and Timothy "NintendoCapriSun" Bishop. This article from the Lapland University of Applied Sciences specifically talks about the Thrown Controllers game show which the group holds in conventions like MomoCon, Pax East and Magfest. Admittedly, these two articles are written in Portugese and Finnish respectively, but according to Wikipedia sources do not have to be in English as long as they’re reliable.
The third one “Beyond the Classroom Walls” is admittedly a trivial mention, but it does mention him as one of the most notable Let’s Players alongside mainstream personalities Markiplier and PewDiePie, showing that he does belong in that category of influential Let’s Play channels. Perhaps if his article got restored, this can also be used as a source for the Wikipedia article for Let’s Plays - in which he should be included. There was also a fourth scholarly article which merely cites the first episode of his Majora’s Mask series but other than citing it as an example of a game he played, there isn’t too much.

4: And finally, here are a few miscellaneous sources from Reporter, Sequart, Mashable (situationally reliable), STLMag ("There was this YouTuber I found, chuggaaconroy…"), and Examiner.net (not ".com"). Some of these sources might not be the most recent, but I think WP:NTEMP should apply here. In total, I collected about 30 good sources which I saved and archived, but I think you've seen enough.

So with these sources, I would like to ask if there is any way the article could be restored, or at least draftified/userfied, so that I may rewrite it using both the old sources in the original article and these aforementioned ones previously unused (and clean up the article in general). I tried the absolute best I could to find as many reliable sources as possible, and I really hope these would be enough to prove his article deserves to be restored. Updated scripts

Twinkle has a number of improvements, including that most watchlist defaults now make use of the new temporary watchlist feature. Other changes include rollbacks treating consecutive IPv6 editors in the same /64 range as the same user, adding a preview for shared IP tagging, a preference for watching users after CSD notification, and for sysops, the ability to block the /64 and link to a WP:RfPP request, and new copyright blocks default to indefinite.
Wikipedia:Shortdesc helper now v3.4.17, changes include minor fixes and preventing edits that don't change the description.
BrandonXLF's CitationStyleMarker now recognizes WP:CSLSA and WP:CSVAN styles, in addition to WP:CS1 and WP:CS2
Joeytje50's JWB now version 4.1.0, includes the ability to generate page lists from the search tool, major updates to the handling of regular expressions, the storing of user settings, the addition of upload protection, and an option to skip pages that belong to a specific category, among other changes. Technical news

Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Arbitration

After a Clarification request, the Arbitration Committee modified Remedy 5 of the Antisemitism in Poland case. This means sourcing expectations are a discretionary sanction instead of being present on all articles. It also details using the talk page or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard to discuss disputed sources.

Welcome, subscribers, to the fifth Discontent Content newsletter! Discontent Content is a newsletter aiming to collate and improve Wikipedia articles in need of more eyes and hands to get them in shape. Its unique trimodal structure allows editors to work where they feel comfortable -- with stubs and starts needing to be brought to standard, mid-quality articles with Good or Featured potential, or quality-assessed articles needing help to maintain their status.

Category 1

Articles in this category are those that need to be brought up to a minimum quality standard. Some will be stubs; others will be longer articles that nonetheless have significant concerns putting them far below B- or C-class adequacy.

This issue's Category 1 articles are:

Isolar – 1976 Tour: A substantial musical event for one of the most influential albums of its era, but with a rather spindly, table-focused article (I also note no one seems to have given post-inflation numbers for any of the figures).
Occultism (Islam): "Major topic that's a literal stub because it's about something outside the comfort zone of the average editor" of the day. Esotericism in one of the world's major exoteric religions is, of course, something which can be written about extensively.
G & G v Wikimedia Foundation Inc: Going meta for a moment...This is an interesting case, and it's a shame we discuss it only as a paragraph. It would be fascinating to read further on this topic.

Category 2

Articles in this category, while in better current shape than Category 1, are still missing something. They have the potential to be truly high-quality content, and may have been at one point. With work, they can be brought up to dizzying heights.

This issue's Category 2 articles are:

Misophonia: A concept, symptom, or disorder -- no one's quite yet drawn the borderlands -- where people are unusually upset at noises such as chewing sounds. The idea may sound odd, but it does distress people with it and those around them. The subject is very popular, with Half Million Award-tier page views, but the readers are served by a rather weak article.
Sparks (band): This eccentric, creative band was a GA long ago, but delisted in 2010. Though undersourced, the article certainly has potential to return to its old status.
Han Xin: One of the great military leaders of ancient China is graced by a massively undersourced article. Several sections have none at all.

Category 3

Articles in this category have been assessed through a content review process in the past, but may require work to be brought up to current GA/FA standard. Editors can help bring them to a level where the star or plus near their names can once again shine.

This issue's Category 3 articles are:

Wind: This FA is on a huge, important topic, but its star needs some polishing. FAR notice has been given for significant uncited passages. To quote the talk page, the article has good bones, and it can certainly be restored to modern FA status if anyone is able to work on it.
Jeopardy!: The article for perhaps one of the most famous game shows of all time is at GAR for citation issues. Most of the issues brought up can be fixed quite easily, such as locating page numbers.
French fries: Tasty, but needs more sauce. The GAR discusses unsourced sections and unreliable sourcing; I also notice some pretty blatant prose issues and a spindly lead.

This issue's reader suggestion from Sennecaster:

Maasai people: The Vital 4 article for this major East African ethnic group was recently significantly reduced due to copyvio. It needs urgent work to restore cored-out content, but the references are still available in the article to simplify the process.

One topic I've been broadly thinking about lately is the concept of GA sweeps. There hasn't been one in well over a decade; discussion of a new one is traditionally stymied by the sheer number of GAs that would need sweeping, considering there are over ten times as many as there were at the last sweep. Nonetheless, there's no dispute that many GAs don't really count as 99.5th percentile articles, or even decent-quality articles (whether one's own personal reading of WIAGA is closer to the former or the latter, and how different those things are, is an exercise for the reader).

I've been brainstorming ideas, and I've been wondering if we can tackle the problem with limited-scope sweeps. One idea would be sweeping popular or vital articles -- those that get enough views to make up a significant proportion of the "GA experience" to readers. Another would be focusing on shorter GAs, which might trend towards a less in-depth treatment of the topic than could really justify the rating. There may very well be a path here to maintaining GA standards, and either of those would have the benefit that they might be more likely to encourage people to work on rather than simply delist articles -- popular topics with lots of interested parties willing to help, or smaller topics that don't seem like too big a challenge to pick up.

WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

Guideline and policy news

Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Arbitration

The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.

Howdy - I just grabbed your name from the top of the recently active admins list :) Could I ask you to help put a stop to the ongoing edit-warring at Mirza Abad, Chakri? The entire history of that thing consists of Haseebmirza306 placing uncited material and everyone else reverting it back to redirect. Mulitply warned (half their talk page is about this) but entirely oblivious. Don't know what's indicated here, a page ban comes to mind (which will probably result in them creating a spelling variant, but may be worth a try)... Discontent Content Issue #6

Welcome, subscribers, to the sixth Discontent Content newsletter! Discontent Content is a newsletter aiming to collate and improve Wikipedia articles in need of more eyes and hands to get them in shape. Its unique trimodal structure allows editors to work where they feel comfortable -- with stubs and starts needing to be brought to standard, mid-quality articles with Good or Featured potential, or quality-assessed articles needing help to maintain their status.

Category 1

Articles in this category are those that need to be brought up to a minimum quality standard. Some will be stubs; others will be longer articles that nonetheless have significant concerns putting them far below B- or C-class adequacy.

This issue's Category 1 articles are:

Floating match on card: This famous magic trick is a microstub with an empty section and no meaningful discussion of its methods or effects. Some useful information is available on the talk page.
Erotic horror: A significant literary (or, well...look, you know) genre with significant academic and critical coverage, which you wouldn't know from reading its three-sentence article.
Black ribbon: Currently in poor shape, with unnecessary lists attracting spurious examples, this article nonetheless has potential to cover a coherent topic on a sensitive subject.

Category 2

Articles in this category, while in better current shape than Category 1, are still missing something. They have the potential to be truly high-quality content, and may have been at one point. With work, they can be brought up to dizzying heights.

This issue's Category 2 articles are:

Violin: This twice-candidate at GAN has good bones, but suffers from expanses of uncited content (and indeed expanses of "people slapping CN tags on literally every sentence"). Much of this information should be citable, and potential exists for this article to stand tall amongst other core music articles.
Art museum: Though this looks a little underrated as a soi-disant "Start", it's nonetheless an important cultural article with significant improvement potential. This was a former candidate for the Team-B-Vital campaign ran by members of the Wikimedia Discord to bring Vital Articles to B-class status, and while not selected, it has strong potential for anyone interested in working on it.
Grocery store: Daily life has always been one of Wikipedia's coverage gaps. Though this topic is something virtually anyone deals with on a regular basis, the article struggles with cleanup tags, sandwiching, and the weird fear of prose that drives people to put everything they can in a list. With hundreds of views a day, readers deserve an article with a stronger core.

Category 3

Articles in this category have been assessed through a content review process in the past, but may require work to be brought up to current GA/FA standard. Editors can help bring them to a level where the star or plus near their names can once again shine.

This issue's Category 3 articles are:

Slackers CDs and Games: This GA hasn't had significant content edits since 2008. As much of its content references then-recent controversies, it needs a good look for updating.
Potential superpowers: GA with a multiple issues template, with concerns of outdated information, lack of citations, and potential OR.

Letter from the Editor

After my prior thoughts on GA sweeps and their viability, work is beginning to break down what parts of the backlog can be tackled. Planning is beginning at User:Vaticidalprophet/GA reform and its talk; feel free to give your opinion, participate in current GARs, and assess articles. The current plan is to look at GAs with outstanding cleanup tags as our first priority.

Sorry for the delay this time around -- I've been having A Month healthwise. I expect to maintain this at an approximately monthly schedule and will try not to let it slip further. I'm enthused by the work going on at GAR lately and hope to work something excellent out of it.

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, The Rambling Man and Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are Gog the Mild, Lee Vilenski, BennyOnTheLoose, Amakuru and Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Hi! Reply-link has officially been superseded by mw:DiscussionTools, which you can install using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. Improper termonology at close

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/DokuWiki is not a "speedy keep". There is nothing speedy in a discussion that lasted 22 days. The proper close terminology is "withdrawn by the nominator". New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

Hello Eddie891,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Hitler-fighter articles need help: Erhard Auer & Münchener Post

Erhard Auer was the Editor in Chief of the Münchener Post, it was shut down by Hitler in March 1933 immediately after he became the Reich Chancellor. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party called the newspaper and its editors "Giftküche" (The Poison Kitchen) and "Münchener Pest ("Munich Pestilence" or "Munich Plague"). Hitler considered the paper one of his most vexing public adversaries, and the paper was the target of libel actions by the Nazi Party. The paper was one of the few early warning voices regarding the dangers posed by the rise of the Nazi Party, although their warnings went largely unheeded at the time. Auer was imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp and died 20 March 1945. Question about an AfD

Hello Eddie, I'm reaching out to you for admin advice on an AfD that seems to have been taken over by multiple single purpose accounts WP:SPAs, sock/meat puppets, block evasion. There is a lot of behavioral evidence. I am unsure whether to post a formal request on ANI, or open a SPI, or just wait and hope an admin intervenes at the AfD. As a regular editor, I'm not sure if I'm permitted to strike-out sock !votes. I'm also not sure whether filing a SPI is the correct thing to do because I'm pretty sure, based on behavioral and formatting evidence, that the IP SPAs might be the article creator (who is blocked), and I am hesitant that might formally "out" them in a SPI report. I am hoping you have a moment to please advise me with the proper route to take. Thank you in advance. If you're looking to create an article on yourself, that is strongly discouraged because it poses a conflict of interest. Regardless, an article you create must meet the general notability guideline or a subject-specific notability guideline, with significant coverage in independent, reliable sources. If you're looking for information more broadly on writing a Wikipedia article, I'd recommend reading your first article. Let me know if you have more specific questions I can answer. Hi Eddie891. I went through This Dust Was Once the Man and made some small changes. The only thing I'd change from here is introduce Drum Taps as a collection of poetry, for readers not already familiar with Whitman's work. I.e, change 'were all written as sequels to 'Drum-Taps' to 'were all written as sequels to Whitman's poetry collection Drum-Taps'. Let me know when it's nominated for FAC and I'll happily support it. Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.

DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.

Arbitration

A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Hi IP, the article was deleted as a result of the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Anup Shukla, where the general consensus was that the subject does not meet our notability guidelines, specifically NBIO and NACTOR. The only opposition came from your IP address, where you said the article should not be deleted because it had existed for eight years and been edited "by many verified users." However, neither of those are valid reasons for an article to not be deleted. The subject must meet a relevant notability guideline. RfA 2021 review update

Thanks so much for participating in Phase 1 of the RfA 2021 review. 8 out of the 21 issues discussed were found to have consensus. Thanks to our closers of Phase 1, Primefac and Wugapodes.

The following had consensus support of participating editors:

Corrosive RfA atmosphere
The atmosphere at RfA is deeply unpleasant. This makes it so fewer candidates wish to run and also means that some members of our community don't comment/vote.
Level of scrutiny
Many editors believe it would be unpleasant to have so much attention focused on them. This includes being indirectly a part of watchlists and editors going through your edit history with the chance that some event, possibly a relatively trivial event, becomes the focus of editor discussion for up to a week.
Standards needed to pass keep rising
It used to be far easier to pass RfA however the standards necessary to pass have continued to rise such that only "perfect" candidates will pass now.
Too few candidates
There are too few candidates. This not only limits the number of new admin we get but also makes it harder to identify other RfA issues because we have such a small sample size.
"No need for the tools" is a poor reason as we can find work for new admins

The following issues had a rough consensus of support from editors:

Lifetime tenure (high stakes atmosphere)
Because RfA carries with it lifetime tenure, granting any given editor sysop feels incredibly important. This creates a risk adverse and high stakes atmosphere.
Admin permissions and unbundling
There is a large gap between the permissions an editor can obtain and the admin toolset. This brings increased scrutiny for RFA candidates, as editors evaluate their feasibility in lots of areas.
RfA should not be the only road to adminship
Right now, RfA is the only way we can get new admins, but it doesn't have to be.

Please consider joining the brainstorming which will last for the next 1-2 weeks. This will be followed by Phase 2, a 30 day discussion to consider solutions to the problems identified in Phase 1.

Deletion review for Standard Galactic Alphabet

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Standard Galactic Alphabet. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. I translated the page in from the Nederlands wikipedia and added a few citations and clean up. The page is notable. It has an omniglot entry. The script itself is still being used in video games, and is an important part of video game history. The article needs to be filled in a bit, but there is tons of information on it, so this shouldn't be difficult.

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Grange Industrial Estate (2nd nomination)

I'm unsure were the redirect outcome comes from? Only a single editor suggested this but then rationalised it with what is essentially a delete argument. Besides, the suggested target offers nothing helpful and the delete consensus seemed fairly solid. The new target doesn't even mention the industrial estate. the article does mention a ‘Grange’, and someone looking for it would likely appreciate a redirect to the local area. Redirects are cheap and I didn’t see a convincing rationale for why deletion would have been preferable to redirection- as they are fundamentally similar outcomes. There was no rationale offered for redirection, at all. Grange is merely mentioned as a single unlinked word. I agree with the concept of "cheap" redirects, but if this was in any way appropriate, it would have been supported as such. Just seemed a bit of an inattentive conclusion to me. I don’t see why redirection is such an issue here and I figured most editors could figure out the connection between a redirect to the larger geographic area without explicitly stating it. Again, redirect and delete are essentially the same in that the article isn’t around any more. Here, I didn’t see a reason why deletion would have been much better encyclopedic outcome. If you have a greater problem with my closure, DRV or RfD are the places to take it. If you have a broader issue with my competence as an admin, that’s a discussion we can have. I guess it's more the principle. I perhaps just expect some closure rationale if a concluded outcome isn't consistent with a discussion. It isn't a competence issue, sorry if you felt that. It's also not a significant enough concern to press for review on, though it's a good idea to be mindful about explaining actions if it isn't evident from a discussion (not that you need me to say that). Shemer's Hebrew translation of "Oh Captain, My Captain"

I understand and support your reasoning for reverting my edit here. ^[1]

As a relatively new editor, I am still struggling with the correct way to create links to the Hebrew Wikipedia article^[2] for this poem which includes discussion of the poem itself, Shemer's translation and several earlier translations that were not as popular in Israel. I could not insert it as an internal link to the English Wikipedia. My attempt to add it as an external link resulted in a warning so I removed the "circular" link. The more I read about it - the more confused I get. I am now wondering if I should instead do something through WikiData instead but I have no experience with this and would appreciate some guidance

My statement that the translation which does not mention Rabin by name is performed in yearly memorial services is mentioned in the Hebrew Wikipedia article. I can personally attest that this statement is true and that these performances are so common that any limited sample of quotes not do justice to the phenomenon. The youtube link I provided shows Rabin's widow and granddaughter in the audience at one of these performances - which is notable in its own right. An album compilation of songs to commemorate Rabin is titled "רב חובל" (Captain) after Shemer's Hebrew translation which is included^[3]

The poem does not mention either Nelson or Lincoln by name but is clearly applicable to both. It certainly could not have mentioned Roosevelt, Kennedy or Rabin by name when it was published - but the fact that it was (and still is) used to commemorate fallen leaders is a powerful testimony to its lasting power and popularity.

I would appreciate it if you could help me phrase an appropriate way to mention how the poem is being used as yet another "elegy to a fallen leader". Annette Maon (talk) 13:39, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi, @Annette Maon It must be frustrating to find something you know to be true and not be able to include it. However, wipedia is not a reliable source, so in order for a claim to be included in an article it must be cited in a reliable secondary source, not a separate language Wikipedia article. Similarly something that is "obvious" to you is, unfortunately, generally not acceptable in a Wikipedia article unless you can find a secondary source establishing such a connection. To me, I don't think it's particularly necessary to mention that the poem doesn't mention Rabin by name, because if it's a translation of course it wouldn't-- the original poem doesn't either. Can you find any sourcing discussing the other translations? If so, we can add mention. Let me know if this makes sense or not Eddie891 ^Talk _Work 19:55, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for the response. I am well aware that something that is "obvious" to me or something I can "personally attest" to does not make it acceptable in the Article. That is the reason I said it here on the talk page. I am also painfully aware that Help:Interlanguage links can not be as easily inserted as internal links and are not acceptable as external links. I am still trying to figure out which of the instructions at Help:Interlanguage links are appropriate in the context and would appreciate guidance.

I agree that it is not necessary to mention that "the poem doesn't mention XXX by name" not only because it is a translation of the original which did not mention Lincoln by name but because it would have been impossible for Whitman to mention Roosevelt, Kennedy, Rabin, or Robin Williams before they were even born. The point I was trying to get across (not very successfully) is that the anonymity of the captain allows the poem to refer (without any adjustments) to leaders other than Lincoln and Nelson. If Whitman intentionally crafted the ambiguity and the nautical imagery in the poem to accommodate both Lincoln and Nelson - that can explain the lasting power which keeps the poem immortal.

BTW, the phrase "Although no direct reference to Nelson is made, the parallels are unmistakable" is an exact quote from the only source I could find^[1] that mentions Nelson.

OK, Annette Maon, I think you're asking two different questions, correct me if I'm wrong. 1) you want some clarification on how the poem has been applicable to other national leaders. I edited the first sentence of the 'in popular culture' section to read The poem, which never mentions Lincoln by name, has frequently been invoked following the deaths of a head of state. and added as it never mentions Lincoln, it has been invoked upon the death of several other heads of state. to the lede How does that sound to you? 2) I think you want more of a mention of Horatio Nelson's connection. Unfortunately, we'll never know whether the ambiguity was intentional on Whitman's part-- and I'm just not seeing enough analysis of it that would merit more than a couple of sentences. The very problem is that I've only been able to find that source too. If it really was "unmistakable", one would imagine more sources would describe it. This might sound kind of stupid, but I'm dead serious: If you think there's this completely missing connection, write about it and submit it to a respected literary journal. Thanks User:Eddie891. Your edits clarified the use of anonymity and improved the flow in the "popular culture" section. I agree with you that without a respected publication in a serious journal we do not have justification for more text on Nelson. I am surprised that I can not find more on Nelson. I found several comments in online discussion that express certainty by specific individuals about the reference to Nelson . It is not just the nautical illusion but the reference to the crowds celebrating on the shore that brings Nelson to mind much more than Lincoln. It seems obvious to me (and some others) that the poet uses Nelson's historically well known dramatic death as the basis for the metaphor that he applies to Lincoln's more recent assignation. Still I agree that until someone can find these arguments in a reliable secondary source, my personal views do not justify including them in the article. This does seems to be a "completely missing connection" in the literature and may be an opportunity for someone to get published, but as I have no interest in doing it myself, I guess we'll have to leave it at that.

I am still wondering what would be an appropriate way to apply the instructions at Help:Interlanguage links to mention the Hebrew Wikipedia article. I assume that since you have not replied to that yet, it may not be in your field of expertise or interest. I would appreciate a pointer or ping to someone who might be able to help.

I also wonder if the two links I provided (to youtube and the title of the song compilation) are enough to justify a few more sentences about Shemer's translation still being used in yearly memorial services decades after Rabin's assignation. Many school children in Israel (and some of their younger teachers) were not even born when Rabin was assassinated. They associate the song with Rabin and some are not even aware of the reference to either Lincoln or Nelson. Since I do not have a secondary source for that last statement, I do not expect it to be included in the article. I do believe that placing an expanded reference to Shemer's translation and music in proximity to "some people, maybe even most people, now associate Whitman's verse first and foremost with a movie rather than a poem" would enhance the article. That's an interesting point. I haven't responded to your point about the interlanguage links because I can't really think about a time when it would be appropriate to link another language article where an English one exists. If there's suitable content to mention, it should be added to the English article. Are there reliable Hebrew sources that discuss this connection? If so we can look into expanding a mention on the English Wiki. Sources for content don't have to be in English. Similarly, the youtube link and song compilation are both primary sources that aren't super helpful in establishing that some content should be included. Sure they can verify it, but if it hasn't been discussed elsewhere (for instance in newspapers), why does it merit inclusion in a tertiary encyclopedia? We cannot mention every single time the poem has been read, or else the article would be almost un-navigable. WikiCup 2021 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event).
