Seeking Editor Review Commentary (If You Like)[edit]

Hi. In conjunction with my RfA (that you voted on), I have created an editor review, to give people a chance to comment as to ways in which I can branch out or alter my contributions to Wikipedia. An RfA seems to solely focus on how one's temperment and contributions relate to how they might handle administrative powers (and the consensus on that seems to be that I'm not quite ready); the editor review opens things up a little more to a larger focus, and I'd love to hear community feedback in the sense of that larger focus, too. If you feel you've already expressed yourself sufficiently when casting your vote, then by all means don't worry about it, but if any thoughts come to mind or if you'd like to expound upon any suggestions or commentary, it would be appreciated. In any case, I appreciated you taking the time to express your opinion on my RfA, and I thank you for that. — WCityMike (talk • contribs) 19:55, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar design[edit]

Hi Mopper. Could you design an Olympics barnstar for me please. I'm hoping to get it approved and give it to a few people. A Barnstar has five points, and there are 5 coloured rings on the Olympic flag, so that could be useful. Thanks, Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 06:33, 31 May 2006 (UTC).[reply]

Response to "Userpage and sometimes about good music" on my user page[edit]

I just noticed you claimed you needed a userpage overhaul, so I came by to see if I could help; I was wondering, what do you have in mind? Something like my design? Or perhaps this, or this. Colour and all can be determined later. Oh, and I agree with your musical tastes 100%; especially the Metallica one, their new stuff is just... ._. Oh well, peace. Master of Puppets That's hot. 17:19, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

I do very much like your user page. Banes's isn't bad either. Yeah, I'm hoping Metallica's theoretical new CD will be better, but I'm betting against it. --Evan Seeds (talk) 00:09, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

How does Wikipedia handle a shell artist?[edit]

I am picking at your Wiki-force wisdom again. User:BernieBeau has a new account intent on selling his books. He refs ISBN #'s but any of the library searches I tried with them came up nil. My guess is that he expects his best sales to come from Wikipedia. Whats the Wiki-way of handling this kind of user? Cheers! Anger22 17:41, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just a random passer-by and I figured I could drop a suggestion. I would propose deletion on basis on notability/advertisement/(if you want to be fun) irreapable POV and if the tag is removed put it through AfD. Then again, I'm most likely wrong. Yanksox 17:44, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh he's pitched his product on a couple of articles.(the articles which match the topics of his books that is) He added some substantial "wordage" to one article. It's quite a lengthy addition from a new user...I am guessing it's a "cut n' paste" from his own published/unpublished work. But who know's? The ISBN's don't link to anything. It all shows through as uncited-original research. Thanks for your 2 pennies. Thanks to Yanksox too. My Wiki-force skills are growing and I am about to roll over 5K edits.(it pays to have a PC in every room in the house!) Cheers! Anger22 18:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Careful with the anons[edit]

This edit was largely factually correct, as confirmed by Amazon. So he got one date wrong; that doesn't need reverting. Not all, nor even most, anons are vandals even when they edit a popular page. The CVU IRC bots regularly generate false positives. I'll avoid doling out the obvious blue link here, but editors are innocent until they make themselves guilty, whichever string of characters they edit under. -Splashtalk 02:05, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I regularly vent my frustration on my userboxes. It's taken me HOURS to get them looking half decent, like they are now. Neither will Mum and Dad. I'm sure you know that Sympatico takes stuff like this seriously and has cut off internet service for behaviour before. -- Samir धर्म 10:58, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm guessing the guy's just on a local dynamic IP, but on a somewhat wide range. I'm a little afraid to block it, but I've got it all calculated out if he returns. WP:figure skating[edit]

Howdy Mopper. I just wanted to give you a heads up on what's happening at this WikiProject. I started WikiProject_Figure_Skating/Temp, and I like the layout (the colors need to be changed, of course. I stole the code from User:Covington). However there are a few problems which you might be able to help me with, if you would be so kind! :) The major one is that the "To Do" list seems to squish itself to the right, and I have no idea why it's doing that. Another is that the "edit" links point to sections other than the ones they're supposed to. If you have any time to look at these problems I'd greatly appreciate it. Of course if you're busy with other things that's ok too. Cheers! --Fang Aili talk 14:40, 2 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

Hi,

Just thought I'd let you know, it was my idiot 12-year-old cousin and his idiot friend who were busy vandalizing pages this morning (morning for me anyway) while I was out (off today). I'm going to have to ask someone who knows about computers if there's a way to password protect the system, since the little shits can't be trusted. It's not the first time. However, I should add that everyone with Sympatico internet shares the same IP addresses. I'm not sure why, but everytime I log on I have a different IP. That was at least a part of my creating this account, although I am constantly getting in trouble for vandalism from the 60s, 70s, and occasionally 80s in IP addresses, so I doubt I'll edit much anymore.

Just thought I would let you know.

Reverts at Wikipedia[edit]

Hello, a recent chaos at WP:AN/I centering around reverts to the Wikipedia article seem to have something to do with a bizarre encoding error/glitch character ("") in the article. This symbol appears to have been inserted by 128.205.249.26. You edited the article immediately afterward with the summary "(JS: Revert to revision 55830531 by Tawkerbot2)", which removed the sentence that the IP address user had added, but left the glitch character in place, see this subset of the history. I don't know what kind of tool you're using, but I'm confused as to why it did not fully revert. Perhaps you could have a look at this? — Jun. 5, '06 [05:18] <freak|talk>

This is strange indeed. I thought the general protocol for such a tool would be (a) find the most recent revision by somebody other than the user whom you are reverting, (b) copy all the text from that revision (which, theoretically, should not have contained the glitch pokémon symbol), (c) paste it into a hidden edit form, (d) submit it. The only exception I could envision is if the tool provided for some sort of "section rollback", and that concept, to me, seems strange, and of questionable usefulness. I'll look at the tool if I get time, but my javascript skills are teh sux0r, so I might not learn anything from it.
The only reason I noticed this, by the way, is due to a recent forest fire on WP:AN/I, which you might take a look at, if you have time. — Jun. 5, '06 [06:07] <freak|talk>
The rollback package he has has [restore this revision] on all diff pages (and has a conformation), it also has [revert as vandalism] and [rollback page], which both act as rollbacks as you decribed.Voice-of-AllTalk 15:17, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, i just came to tell you that I redesigned it by myself, so you can probably take me off your list. Thank you very much, Thetruthbelowtalk 02:38, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would love it[edit]

I have seen the awesome pictures you have designed, so feel free to design one for me. I actually kind of got the concept of the page from your own one, except I used what little computer knowledge I had to make it a little more compact. But back to the topic of a picture, I would gladly accept one. Thanks, Thetruthbelowtalk 02:46, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm actually not really sure. It's hard to really put "truth" into picture form. Actually, why don't you pick and design it, as I am not really that creative. Also, just wanted to tell you that under your basic info stuff on your userpage, you say you only have 3,400 edits when you really have over 6,000 wow, that's alot of edits. Make the picture how you like, and as long as it isn't pink with tellatubbys or power rangers on it, I think it will be great. :D. Thanks for everything, Thetruthbelowtalk 02:57, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use images on userpages[edit]

Hi Master of Puppets, thank you for informing me that fair use images can't be used on userpage spaces.[5] I appreciate it and would have removed it from my page once I knew this rule. What I do not appreciate is your determination to simply remove it without notifying me first. --ElectricEye (talk) 10:41, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help with my User Page?[edit]

Hey, Thanks for your warm welcome last week. I was hoping maybe you could help me with my User Page. I spent hours getting it the way I want it but it appears someone may have messed with whatever template I was using for the User Boxes and they don't appear to the right anymore like they should. Could you possibly help me design the page so that this does not happen in the future? Thanks. Spazzz 17:52, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Internal links to mid-article anchors[edit]

The FAQ is a little overwhelming, but I did look through it *briefly*.

How do I internal link to a anchor (the proper HTML term, right?) of a Wikipedia article. I found a work around, using an "external" link but it looks sloppy, and I know there is a way to do it (or so one would hope) but I cannot find any examples to copy off of.

phales it miserably in IE and Opera[edit]

Your user page and talk page phale it miserably in IE and Opera, the only browser that it renders correctly in it FF. The title absolute position div is misplaced in IE, and the [show] links don't work in Opera. ~Cchan199206 posting from: 207.69.139.12 21:41, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure you have JS enabled in opera? And the reason it doesn't work in IE is because it has a very rendering and can't even do curved borders. IE just is bad for HTML graphics. GeorgeMoney (talk) 22:38, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MSIE is a bug-ridden, insecure browser (why else are there a ton of patches for it and even undocumented security issues) and I don't know why anyone uses it anyway. — Nathan (talk) / 05:02, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for assistance[edit]

Hi, Master of Puppets,

Thank you for the instructions, but I am not a new-comer in WP. I am one of the supporters of the certainty principle. I just opened a new account, so that those, who fight against the certainty principle, could not immediately remove my posts and block me.

Currently we have great problems around the article certainty principle.

The certainty principle is a physical principle in quantum mechanics that generalizes both the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and Mandelshtam-Tamm relation (for energy and time) on some unified base (group theory and Fubini-Study metric). It was discovered more than a year ago by Russian theoretical physicist D. Arbatsky. It is supported by specialists (not only by "sockpuppets" in WP) and now we want to have an article for it. But some people, who are not specialists in the subject, still insist that the principle "does not pass Google test" and that their "crank detecor is beeping".

Situation became really bad. I do not want to talk much about personal attacks, threats etc., that were made by both sides. There are things that are much worse. The war became really destructive for Wikipedia, for articles that do not belong to the topic, and for users who do not participate in the war.

Some admins (opponents of the CP) believe that when they fight with "bad" users, they do not have to follow Wikipedia policy. If some user is new and is "likely" a sockpuppet of other "bad" user, then this "sockpuppet" must be blocked "on sight", even if this user does not break any WP-policy. Many such people were indefinitely blocked in the CP-war, even those who, possibly, did not know about the war. They cannot come back to WP, because when account is blocked, the IP-address is blocked also. Possibly, admins here do not understand this.

Hryun, who wrote the good version of the article, behaved quite agressively (and this is bad, of course). But he claimed from the very beginning that he is proficient in computers and will overcome protection. But most people cannot do that. Why do they have to suffer just because they support the same ideas as Hryun?

Being suppressed by administrative power, some CP-fighters began to vandalize even those articles, that do not belong to the topic. (Possibly, they all were sockpuppets of Hryun.)

What can I suggest in this situation? I think, it is necessary to undelete the controversial article and allow people to fight there and in related articles (formally, it is legal to do that, see [6]; see also consensus). It is also necessary to persuade other admins not to block those people, who do not break any WP-policy. Even if those people "push" some "unusual" POV, but do not break WP-policy, they may not be blocked. It is also necessary to unblock all such people that were blocked already.

If you help to do all these things (or at least undelete the article), you would make a great thing for Wikipedia and for me. Thank you. (Reply here.) Lokas 16:53, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, first I'll go and read up on the article; while I don't doubt for a second that CP is important, there are literally thousands of similar cases on Wikipedia. Original or new research, particularily in science, can take a bit to catch on in the mainstream, so the others you've spoken to likely are just being wary and waiting for an outside, major source to confirm this. And it isn't only CP; heck, humanity thought the earth was flat for a good few millenia. Of course, I probably sound like I have no clue whatsoever and am writing filler text; trust me, I'm not. I'll look it over a bit and see if there's anything amiss. Cheers, Master of Puppets Giant Enemy Crab! 02:58, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I do not think that you are just writing filler text. I completely agree with you. And this is good that you compare this case with that "humanity thought the earth was flat". Two years ago humanity thought that the combination of words "certainty principle" was complete nonsense in the context of the uncertainty principle... But today it is not! Unfortunately, it happened so that uncertainty principle is well-known in popular culture. For this reason, even those people, who are not specialists in quantum mechanics, pay too much unnecessary attention to the CP. And for this reason, they also reasonably suspect that "pseudoscience cranks" could likely suggest the CP. But when you talk about "waiting for an outside, major source to confirm this", I have serious doubts about it. It is unclear, what a "major source" is. (Resolution of the United Nations? ;-)) Now we have real scientists who confirm the correctness and importance of the CP. There are no scientists, who have objections against the CP. And I do not understand why some people spend their time to fight with something that they are not specialists in? And what is more, they believe for some reason that their mission is so important, that they may break WP policy all the time. Possibly, you are not a specialist in quantum mechanics, so I do not ask you to study the CP. I ask you to help to organize constructive process within the rules of WP, and without administrative terrorism. Thank you. Lokas 18:09, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:MusicInWrestling.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:MusicInWrestling.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Project updates
Greetings, Star Wars editors! Deckiller here. It's the first edition of the WikiProject Star Wars newsletter, and yes, it's a semi-ripoff of the Esperenza newsletter. I think it's important to begin with some good news: Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and Jabba the Hutt have reached featured article status! Kudos to the editors who helped obtain these achievements!

WikiProject Star Wars is also on a mission to improve Star Wars articles using the following ideas:

  • An out of universe perspective versus an in universe perspective (see Wikipedia:Writing about fiction and the future ammendments to our manual of style)
  • Evolving lists into regular articles
  • Moving excess information and specifics to Wookieepedia (and providing links to Wookieepedia per the "see also" and/or "external links" sections)
  • Enhanced communication amongst WikiProject members
  • More to come

These should provide the basic steps needed to improve and "encyclopedia-fy" the Star Wars series of articles.

Things to do
There are plenty of Wikipedia:WikiProject Star Wars/things to do. An update to the page is coming very soon, and it will represent the new and exciting changes that Star Wars pages will be receiving!
Out-of-universe versus in-universe perspectives
Although details are forthcoming, I would like to take this time to explain the gist of this concept. Wikipedia has generally agreed that fictional articles should write about the topic from a "real world" perspective, focusing on real world issues and topics, with a section or two for plot synopsis and so on. Jabba the Hutt is a solid character example, and Clone Wars (Star Wars) is quickly moving toward an out of universe perspective.
Article evolution

As many of you know, lists of minor Star Wars-related themes are very common on Wikipedia; however, since these may be seen as violations of Wikipedia policy (and having seperate articles would breach even more policies), the tentative solution is to create general articles on a list's topic (for example, turning List of Star Wars devices into Technology of Star Wars, which allows us to cover everything from hyperspace to comlinks in a general encyclopedic fashion). This can be very tough for some broad topics, so the key is organization. I encourage all editors to list their ideas on the WikiProject talk page. It will be a very difficult — but tangible — effort.

For an example, let me point you to the Final Fantasy WikiProject. Some of us over at that WikiProject decided to turn various components of Final Fantasy X, such as Pyreflies, Yevon, and the backstory — into an article describing the world of Spira. Location descriptions were given a List of locations in Spira article, and the details themselves were placed on the Spira (Final Fantasy X) page. This is a decent template to follow — however, we will need to place priority on out-of-universe, "real life" topics and perspectives in realtion to the article.

Sounds confusing, eh? It won't, for examples will be popping up left and right in the near future!

Signed...

Personally, I'd be flattered. :D Good luck! ~Kylu (u|t) 06:33, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My image[edit]

As a token of my gratitude, I present you with the most delicious-looking cake I can find!

Oh my God, it's so beautiful! I can't think what I have done to deserve such a divine gift, but I am eternally grateful. Thank you so much! Sergeant Snopake 10:29, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're you. That deserves it. =) — Nathan (talk) / 08:14, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Nathan! ;) But seriously, MoP, thank you so much, it's fantastic! Sergeant Snopake 10:24, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ayep, I'm in this one too. Oh, also got stuck with a mop... does that mean we're both moppers now? o.O; ~Kylu (u|t) 07:25, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Monitoring Americans for Homeland Security?[edit]

who the hell are you to come to my talk page and leave drivel? cashing in on the homeland security money by monitering the cyclo? pretentious bitch. oh, does that qualify as an opinion, not a fact? the compilation of history is in fact, an opinion. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Zen Destiny (talkcontribs) .

Oi, gotta love people who jump to incivility. — Nathan (talk) / 03:37, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note (for lack of better title)[edit]

In case you haven't noticed, you've got a duo of WikiProject Star Wars userboxes, and another of your userboxes says you're still 14. That aside, nice userpage. Picaroon9288|ta co 04:41, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, your turn has arrived for admin coaching! As it's been a while since you've signed up I just wanted to check that you are still wanting it. If so simply add your name to the "Unassigned" section of the coaching box. Cheers, Petros471 21:45, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, right section :) (I've been holding off archive just to I can keep that bit up the top for coaching messages!). I'll assign you some coaches as soon as I've gone through a few more potential trainees. Petros471 21:57, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
User:Ilyanep (assuming Ilyanep is still available for coaching, otherwise we can find you another coach) and User:Fang Aili are your new coaches :) I suggest setting up a user subpage to co-ordinate coaching efforts, and that you introduce yourself to your coaches. Let me or EWS23 know if you have any questions. Petros471 22:11, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Master of Puppets! I noticed your edit here on Fang Aili's talk page. It seems you're her new coachee! As her old one, I can tell you she's really good, and her advise and support were really helpful to me thoughout my entire coaching process. Good luck on your coaching. Happy editing! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 23:32, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, MoP. Hope I can coach you well, but don't be surprised if I'm a tad inactive. I will be researching things on Wikipedia, though so if you leave me a message, I'll get it. — Ilyanep (Talk) 14:36, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, Master of Puppets. The judges would like to announce that the winner for the Esperanza User Page Contest has been chosen. Congratulations to Kylu for winning the contest. The winning entry can be found here.

Weeee![edit]

Sorry, but I'm going to have to steal your userpage, For about a week I've been looking for a userpage that I can use to base by own page on, I need to revamp it, It won't be exactly the same as yours, I'm just basing my userpage on it, I'll change the colours and other stuff. Barnstar[edit]

For being bold when making barnstars (like the Welcomer's Barnstar), I award you this Barnstar Barnstar. Killfest2Daniel.Bryant 08:02, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Userpage Theft *gasp*[edit]

Yeah, that would be great! I'd like to keep the layout (e.g. how stuff is ordered) but change the graphics and colour. I'm new to this stuff, I only got an account on the 13th of July, I know all the basic stuff (photos, tags, citing) but I don't really no how to do graphics and stuff like boxes that well. If you could design a new userpage for me that would be awesome, cheers mate! -- Lego@lost 03:22, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh Yeah,[edit]

Oh yeah, If you redesign my userpage, would it be possible to keep my ever-growing list of userboxes on the right hand side? -- Lego@lost 03:41, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Userpage Theft *gasp* (again!)[edit]

No worries, Take as long as you want to do it, I'm in no hurry! -- Lego@lost 05:21, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Archive it![edit]

  • prods you* You haven't archived your talk page in ages! I demand you do so now! (both of your archival criteria have been surpassed) Kalani [talk] 20:57, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, holy canoli, as your admin coach my first recommendation is that you archive this page. :) --Fang Aili talk 19:57, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You've got a Thank you card![edit]

UNSC page[edit]

Sorry for constantly taking down your background on the UNSC. I didn't see a source the first time and assumed it wasn't canon, but I did read your recent reference to the official history on Xbox.com which confirms you were correct.
