Asma Gull Hasan wikipedia page

[edit]

Dearest Master of Puppets -

I hope this message finds you well! And please forgive me if I am posting this note in the wrong area - please feel free to delete or move it, if so.

I am one of the contributors to Hasan's page and have followed the dialogue that ensued last evening. Certainly, I am very aggressive in editing Hasan's page, but please know that it is a labor of love. With that said, I noticed you said you would "lock" the page and I am here to request that the page be locked completely in its current form.

In regards to my background, I have followed Hasan and I am a major fan of her books. She has appeared frequently on talk shows and traveled the world doing her best to build bridges between America and Muslims - to me, her work is that of a hero.

With that said, I deeply feel that information about Malik Hasan, Muhammad Ali Hasan, and Michael Muhammad Knight are irrelevant to Asma Hasan's career as a writer, commentator, and lawyer. In the changes that were taking place, I would say that, at some points, the majority of Asma Hasan's page had more information about Malik Hasan's Republican contributions and Knight's negative comments about her, than it did about Asma Hasan's own accomplishments and lifework. When looking at the wikipedia pages of other celebrated authors, like William Faulkner or Toni Morrison, it is filled with information about their influences, their lifework, and their accomplishments - nothing of the political affiliations of their parents and/or quotes from opposing writers who are criticizing them.

In all, I feel that the current version of Asma Gull Hasan's page, as cleaned up by USERS Dominic and Ground Zero, is in perfect form. With that said, if you would be so kind to lock it in its current form, I would deeply appreciate it. If not locked, I will plan on remaining aggressive in editing Hasan's page so that her lifework and accomplishment as an author and lawyer is reflected, not the criticisms of Knight or the political contributions of her father. I appreciate your time in getting involved.

Thank you so much and be well! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.43.206 (talk) 08:30, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Images and usefulness

[edit]

Hi, Master of Puppets. Is by any chance the anon you? Your unexpected visit to me, and your geoinfo on your talk page lead me to think so. I thought the anon may be one of editors in the edit wars, but I'm glad to know I'm wrong.

For your information, I'm not the one who initially inserted the image, but just wanted to end up the silly edit war between other editors in the name of "consensus". I think the image is not good and agree with your thought, but if you look through the talk page, you will see many "dramas" surrounding someone's obsession over the image and another big drama there. If you think the image is not good to be on the article, please leave your thought on the talk age. Thanks.--Caspian blue 04:14, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm on my knees, begging, pleading and at your mercy for help. I am extremely new to the Wiki world and am at a loss for how to maneuver through this site. Deliberate Edit Warring.

[edit]

Reference the article on analog signal. The recent edit war on that article has been started again by User:Oicumayberight. You attempted to revert to the pre edit war version but unfortunately, you failed to remove the controversial material (I suspect you didn't notice or appreciate it). user:I B Wright (in my view) correctly identified the material as being outside the scope of the article as it was really on an entirely different subject and removed the controversy. However user:Oicumayberight insists on reintroducing the material and is clearly trying to deliberately rekindle the edit war, even though a reasonable conclusion had been reached. 86.143.182.140 (talk) 17:13, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request for undeletion of Elysium (band)

[edit]

Hi! I was surprised not to find a page about the band Elysium. It appears this article was deleted several times for lack of notability and you were the last to delete it (hence this message). If this article was about the Polish death metal band, then this surely is a mistake since the band has released 6 albums (3 on a major independant label: Metal Mind Productions) in a 10+ year lifespan. And despite I don't listen to death metal, I even remember seeing some of those records in music stores here in France (not quite close to Poland). To convince yourself, see the Polish article.

Could you please investigate and, if you agree with me, restore the article in its best version? I will then add a discography (if it is missing) so that notability will not be questioned again. Thanks — Xavier, 00:05, 25 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! Thanks for raising your concerns. The last revision (that I deleted) was about a British prog rock group. If you'd like, I can unprotect it and you can see about writing an article about the Polish band. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 15:38, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ITN/doc

[edit]

I see you added the following text to Template:In the news/doc back on Nov 29:

"In terms of main page balance, right now we're configured for widescreen monitors, which it appears most editors use. Standard configuration users; please do not change the balance even if it looks off on your monitor.

The second sentence doesn't make sense to me. Did you mean to use a colon or comma instead of a semicolon? And what is a "standard configuration user"? Someone using a 4:3 (non-widescreen) monitor? Why should that really make any difference, given the vast differences in resolution and font size used by different users? - dcljr (talk) 00:37, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MoP. Don't you think it's possibly a bit much to block a large library for a whole month over disruptive edits by just one library patron to just one page? To prevent collateral damage, wouldn't it be better to just semiprotect the affected page?--Pharos (talk) 19:54, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I think it'd be better to avoid blocking the library. We're working on our library relations, and a large percentage of the New York library IPs are blocked. Enigmamsg 20:12, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A previous IP had also been blocked for the same edits. This user just continued editing on a separate terminal. However, I guess semi-protection could work; keep in mind that this seems to be an ethnic issue, and the ethnicity in question is bound to have many more pages available to be messed around with. We can't sp them all. Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 04:26, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All right, what business did you have in deleting this page, especially without warning? Restore it now, please. --Calton | Talk 04:14, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your paranoia aside (really? you object to quality control?), bad pages can only be watched when they're created, especially when the bad pages are created on the user pages themselves. By your logic, I can monitor the user pages for bad edits but yet at the same time I can't monitor the user pages because some vague notion that someone, somewhere, may be offended. That's a non-response. --Calton | Talk 04:56, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't quite call it paranoia. And you would be wrong. Something, I dunno, fact-based, might be better. Something actually policy-based -- no weasel-wording about "discourage", please -- regarding your admin action and your complete lack of warning -- and no, you can't fall back onto WP:IAR because as far as I'm concerned, you've worsened things by making basic quality control more difficult. Once again, "because I said so" is not a sufficient reason.
I'll also note that you haven't addressed the obvious contradiction I pointed out, nor do you seem to understand it given your non-operative suggestion regarding WP:MFD: to use that, you must actually find the bad pages, something you've made more difficult because of some whim of yours. --Calton | Talk 06:03, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But, of course, you can submit another if you think this is a bad copy. Secret Saturdays (talk) 16:31, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Are you kidding? That's a heck better than my ad. I would have never thought of using those pictures or those transitions. I hope you have it finished and submit it onon September 2 (on the final day of Modern Olympic founder, Pierre de Coubertin) but you can finish it earlier. Oh and the only change is that you should include the File:Beijing 2008 Olympic cauldron lighting (cropped).JPG. You can consult me if you have any more question or need help. (and please let me know when you created it) Good luck! Secret Saturdays (talk) 04:21, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The ad is brilliant! I never expected it to be done the next day! The only change is that the font colors for "From the hands of the ancients..." and "... to the hands of the future..." be changed so the words are more visible (such as "From the hands of the ancients..." in Yellow and "... to the hands of the future..." in Aqua). Other than that, it's perfect and I'm going to post it on WikiProjects Olympics now! (Also let me know if you update it). Congrats! Secret Saturdays (talk) 00:23, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re:ITN nomination. Again.

[edit]

Wow, hi! Nice to hear from you, I don't believe we've spoken before. Thanks for the encouraging words. :) Which article do you recommend expanding for Argentina and Venezuela? I can only find Foreign relations of Argentina and Foreign relations of Venezuela as Argentina-Venezuela relations doesn't seem to exist. They would replace the Foreign relations of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Foreign relations of Rwanda if they were posted so there wouldn't be two twos on the Main Page at the same time. Do you think this a good idea? I love the sheep and rabbits! :) --candlewicke 13:51, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh thank you, I'll look into it. Can you please check the Mauritania suicide bombing nomination under August 8? I've asked several users about it all week and maybe I'm incorrect but (certainly by ITN's standards) it would appear to have a consensus of some sort. I hope I'm not coming across in a negative way by persisting—I just wouldn't like to see the three users who nominated, created and expanded it miss out on a valid ITN candidate. :) --candlewicke 21:12, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How about: Mauritania's first suicide attack occurs outside the French embassy in Nouakchott. That would place the emphasis on the fact that it is the first such attack in that country's history. --candlewicke 23:06, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think perhaps it is the first known occurrence that makes it notable. Compare Iraq any day, for example, and we could have a body count but of course this becomes less notable the more it happens. A second attack like this in Mauritania which kills, say, two people and has a body count may not be a typical ITN because it is not the first occurrence as this is. Plus a suicide attack that occurs and generates as much interest as this without even having a high body count is perhaps unusual in my opinion. Those are just some of my thoughts on the matter. Also, there are those who are displeased at ITN's habit of frequently reporting dozens of deaths. I can't imagine they would oppose this relatively little loss of life. Who are the many people it does not appeal to? :) --candlewicke 23:33, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
How about: Mauritania's first suicide attack occurs in Nouakchott. Simple and factual. --candlewicke 00:40, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's fine. I'm sure if someone else doesn't they will change it (or complain if they can't). :D --candlewicke 00:46, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: References and BLP

[edit]

Hi there. It seems Delldot has references all the parts I was querying, largely the sections on his role in the genocide, the first paragraph of which was uncited (the entire section had only one cite) when I tagged it. References have improved significantly since I tagged it, and I suspect the tag can be removed now. Fast acting! SGGH ping! 20:40, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! When cropping a JPEG image for the main page, it's ideal to do so without re-compressing it (as this ensures that there is no quality reduction and no file size increase). The only limitation is that the cropping must occur in increments of predefined data blocks (not on a pixel-by-pixel basis), but this rarely is problematic.

In Windows, Jpegcrop is a good application that allows this. (I don't know what's available for other operating systems.)

If this is not possible, it sometimes makes sense to manually reduce the cropped image to 100x100px (to prevent it from being re-compressed a second time by MediaWiki), but only when the cropped segment already is fairly close to this size. (Otherwise, the full-size image is of value to readers.) When performing such a reduction, it's very important to apply a reasonable amount of compression (because that exact file will be displayed on the main page). In general, a 100x100px JPEG should not exceed 5 KB. (I note this because your upload was 34 KB—a larger file than the 510×768px JPEG from which it was derived.) In Windows, a good method is to save the newly cropped image in a lossless format (such as BMP or PNG) and re-save it as a JPEG via IrfanView with a quality setting of between 90% and 95%. (Again, I don't know what software to recommend for other operating systems.)

Lastly, please include the {{m-cropped}} template and all available copyright/source information in the image description.

Thank you! —David Levy 02:30, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sir, I see that you deleted the wiki page COE (CATIA Operator's Exchange) for the reason "Blatant Advertising" back in March, 2008. Please let me understand why this qualifies as "blatant advertising"? We are an independent non-profit user group dedicated to aid the users of Dassault Systemes Software (CATIA, ENOVIA, DELMIA, etc). We do have one Annual Conference per year, as well as several Workshops. You can view our main web site at HTTP://www.coe.org. Possible protection of Rock Hill, South Carolina article

Within the last two months, the user 208.104.139.177 has made twenty edits to the page on Rock Hill, South Carolina by adding false information and unnecessary vandalism to the page. As a resident of Rock Hill, I am appalled to find out that a user on this site has made false statements and numerous disruptive edits on the page of the city in which I reside. There have been recent attempts to ban the user, but as of 07:38 UTC, the user in question has made an edit to the page in question that I cannot identify as the current version displayed on this site. I see you just deleted the IT park chandigarh redirect. Maheshkumaryadav (talk · contribs) has been driving several editors crazy with his creation of strange redirects and articles. His talk page history is a litany of warnings, prod notices, deletion notices, and sincere attempts to engage him in a discussion. His only response has been Blanked the page. After two final warnings,[3][4] and multiple warnings about his bizarre redirects[5][6][7], and countless deleted redirects and deleted articles that drew no warning due to 'why bother', he continues. For the second time, he has created a redirect for IT park chandigarh - the first time "Chandigarh" was capitalized.[8] Could you block him please? I see you deleted J._John_Mann for lacking an assertation of notability. In looking at the article, I can definitely see an assertation of notability (ref Special:Undelete/J._John_Mann) such as having 400 published works and ten books. Thoughts? Keegan (talk) 04:08, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, just curious. I only ask because I was following up on the note from CactusWriter about the OTRS ticket on permission as a non-copyvio. Happy editing to you. Keegan (talk) 04:48, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Drunken Dead Guy

[edit]

Hi MoP,

Just thought you'd like a heads-up on the SPI I initiated about the two users who are fighting this AfD. All of the edits from these two users (and a third who only has one edit who may also be an SP) are in support of this article. Don't know if you can do anything to investigate, but thought you should know. Also, if you take a look at User talk:Sec4dr you'll notice that you're being accused of all sorts of nefarious things designed to make that user's life impossible. Thanks for your hard work! Frmatt (talk) 07:53, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, would you mind telling me what in the articles asserts notability please? They've been repeatedly recreated which suggests to me that they have been created by the company themselves. I can't find any reliable information about any of the companies. Smartse (talk) 14:10, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One day there was a notice saying the article I posted on Maria Oquendo, M.D., was recommended for Speedy Deletion. The next day the article was gone.

Is there a rule about how frequently contributors must check their contributions to avoid Speedy Deletion? Thanks for your answer. Psychiatry777 (talk)

Hi there MOP, VASCO to the reply,

Yes i love metal, but not all of it. Mostly the classics, where METALLICA, MEGADETH and IRON MAIDEN top the list. "I'll have none" of that CRADLE OF FILTH and akin stuff, man, too much loud :) Also, even though i don't "consume" it extensively, i recognize the art, musical quality and effort in my countrymen MOONSPELL's work. Do you like those guys?

Cheers, VASCO (and of course you can call me by my name man) - --NothingButAGoodNothing (talk) 23:41, 29 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I haven't heard any in full, but i have a friend who has heard them all and claims the musical quality is superb. Plus (in your case), the language bit is cool since 99,99999% of their catalogue is in English. I guess Wolfheart or Irreligious would be a good "sneak preview"...Cheers,

Closing of Diamond-searcher AFDs

[edit]

Hello. I had a question about your closing of the Shirley Strawn AFD. You only merged/redirected one and said you weren't clear about the other one, but all the people in the discussion were pretty clear that they thought both should be merged/redirected ("Redirect both articles", "the titles are relevant search terms" and "the names are plausible search terms"), so I was wondering how you came to your decision. Thanks! — DroEsperanto (talk) 03:20, 31 August 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Speedy Deletion of Maria Oquendo

[edit]

Hi Master of Puppets. Thanks for responding to my situation in a friendly way. However, I am puzzled by your remark on my talk page that if I do not make any note on a page marked for Speedy Deletion, an administrator will probably delete the page within six hours. Does that mean I would have to monitor my pages not only daily (which I do not do), but perhaps even every six hours to prevent deletions? Also, when a page is deleted, for example, “John Smith,” is there any record of this history on the article page that viewers see if “John Smith” is replaced by a better “John Smith” article? In other words, is the “John Smith” page, or future "John Smith" page, marred for life? Psychiatry777 (talk) 15:41, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Help with vandal IP

[edit]

The user at the IP 24.186.214.221, which you recently blocked for 31 hours over a week ago, has been vandalizing the Juggalo page ever since his block has ended. He's vandalized the page 16 times, including reverting my own edits. After his first 7 times, I issued a level 3 warning (based on his previous warnings). After his refusal to stop and continuing to vandalize the page, I issued a level 4 warning, but he just undid the edit on his talk page. I haven't reverted his edits to the Juggalo page or his talk page since, because I know he'd just revert my edit. I was wondering if you could be of some help with him. Thanks for looking into this. I think the COIN report covers the situation fairly well. He was confronted with the problems over two years ago. He's decided to continue spamming links to his articles, while labeling the removal of the links as vandalism. I hope your intervention into the situation will help. --Ronz (talk) 15:42, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I also wanted to leave my thanks, Mr. Master. What really raised red flags for me is that this editor has been adding pointy external links to off-wiki articles he has personally written since 2007 and while his edits generally are reverted he hasn't been blocked, ever. It surprised me that someone could continue that behavior for years and keep under the radar. Thank you for looking into this. -- Atama 16:02, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If i'd chosen ataza as my user name, would COI have applied? How is an article published in 4 countries SPAM? What's the author trying to sell? HAM!This is a link that means a lot to many people. Why remove it? Why not give readers a choice? After all, it's not the actual text, but just a link. Also, all my contributions have been tampered with or reverted by 'editors' of a differing opinion. Even entries which i started and improved over the years. More often than not zealot editors are the very reason why wiki is vandalised. I mean, some are actively engaged in the act itself. How has removing my link helped wikipedia? 58.175.169.142 (talk) 05:22, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Five years of nonsense

[edit]

Now that this guy has lasted exactly five years on here, do you think it would be worth Wikipedia trying anything to shut him down completely, even if it requires a massive rangeblock of some sort? We are way over 1,200 accounts now and his game has exhausted many of our editors, especially PMDrive1061. He's had his five years. Hello and a request

[edit]

I was just logging a vandalism report when I came across the following comments that seem out of line with the Wiki policy of "don't bite the newcomers." FWiW, I couldn't see anything wrong with the submissions but the comments directed to this new editor were very strident and I believe, unwarranted. Bzuk (talk) 03:06, 8 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]

This comment was contentious: "Just read the policies I've already referenced. If after doing that you decide to continue adding the links, others will get involved and we'll have to see what happens." FWiW Bzuk (talk) 03:38, 8 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]
Thanks for hearing me out. I am particularly attuned to the WP:OWN syndrome that seems to percolate from time to time, (myself included) and can lead to confrontations over seemingly minor or trivial matters. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 03:49, 8 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]

The "of" Cabal

[edit]

Dear MOP, do you think you would be interested in joining a Cabal? Specifically, this cabal would be limited to those who have the cabalish word "of" in their username. Further, the Cabal would be more limited to those who have three word usernames and "of" beign the second/middle name. I think this is seriously past due and I would like to invite you embark on this Cabal with me. I thank you, quite sincerely. Basket of Puppies 20:27, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Now hold on, before you turn this offer down (considering that you already have), think of all the people who might qualify for this cabal. Warofdreams, PericlesofAthens, KnowledgeOfSelf, JackofOz, Freakofnuture, Deacon of Pndapetzim, King of Hearts, ChildofMidnight, Voice of All, Rainbow of Light, and AngelOfSadness all have at least 20,000 edits. I, on the other hand, will be forced to start a competing cabal of editors with numbers in their name. Useight (talk) 21:42, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hey there Master of Puppets.

Just a thought, instead of being a Wikipedia Administrator, have you ever thought about getting a life?--122.57.95.114 (talk) 04:42, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Haha! No worries mate. The "Real" life sucks at the moment. Best place to be is here.--122.57.95.114 (talk) 04:48, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading Commons images

[edit]

Hello! When uploading a Commons image for local protection, it usually is best to retain its actual title unless it needs to be altered in some way (e.g. cropped). Otherwise, the Commons link on the description page will be broken (unless the original title is added as an optional parameter) and it will be far less likely that other Wikipedia sysops will notice and undelete the local image if/when it's needed in the future.
Thanks! —David Levy 14:42, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, sorry about that! My reasoning was that, since it was the same as the article's image, protecting it would result in the article image also being protected; if anybody wanted to upload a new, better image during this time, they wouldn't be able to (as Wikipedia defaults to on-site images, if I'm correct). Hence, I felt I should upload a different image. However, I completely didn't think about the consequences you mentioned. Sorry about that! Thanks a lot for telling me, too. :) Master of Puppets - Call me MoP! :D 14:47, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome!
Regarding the issue that you described, the logic is that if someone has a better version of the image, he/she will request that a sysop upload it over the protected version (and it the main page image will be improved in the process). But if the main page image has a different name, he/she likely will simply upload the improved version to Commons (and the main page image will not be improved). —David Levy 21:27, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I don't really care. You are welcome to remove it again, if you don't like it. --BorgQueen (talk) 16:26, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Thank you most kindly for protecting the Mary Baker Eddy article. Hopefully this person will grow bored and go away. It's been a pain for the past few days so your help and actions are appreciated -- Digitalican (talk) 20:27, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

United Arab Emirates is currently a good article nomineee. Can you please review and comment about it? Secret Saturdays (talk) 21:46, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PS. The ad about Motto of the Day is no longer needed (we have solved the lack of editors problem).
