In your admin capacity, I have a question...

Hi, Orangemike - you commented about the notability of G. Edward Griffin here [1]. The article is subject to DS, and has been under various kinds of PP and 1RR because of the opposition's inability to recognize NPOV issues, and their desire to keep it a WP:COATRACK. One editor initiated an RfC, then refused to accept the close determined by Nyttend. The close was challenged at AN and consensus supported the original close, but with some ambiguity. I have requested numerous times for the editors who want to keep the contentious material in the BLP to please provide RS and cite the material properly. They have done nothing which appears to be WP:SQS. Now we have User:JPS, (formerly the following: [2]) who suddenly appeared at Griffin and has since decided it needs to be deleted. He has not even been an involved editor of prose, only recent discussions in support of the opposition. There was no consensus reached about deleting the article to my knowledge, but he went ahead and initiated the AfD today. Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/G._Edward_Griffin_(4th_nomination) I feel this action was disruptive and unwarranted considering all the RS I've provided at the TP to establish his notability. This was not a GF request for deletion, and it certainly did not take into consideration the amount of time GF editors have invested trying to improve/expand the article for GA review (I began editing on Dec 10th). Can you please advise me as to whether they acted properly, and if there are grounds for DS to be imposed? Thank you in advance. AtsmeConsult 03:54, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

With regard to WP:ENGVAR in article Fandom

Thanks, Orangemike, for putting those two instances of labour back to labor. As I was WikiSlothing the article I noted an argument for putting it in British English: The earliest etymology is to Sherlockians, inevitably a British variety of fandom. An argument, but not a terribly compelling one.

Turns out our editor, Special:Contributions/Svea_Bergström is very new, and on reviewing ENGVAR, there's a very gentle template to template her with, {{subst:uw-lang}}. She's already been hit with a poorly worded copyvio deletion template, I wouldn't threaten a new editor with a block for copy-pasting wikia, I probably would were it CNN. I thought you might apply the template, as I was not able to undo the ENGVAR edits myself.   —Aladdin Sane (talk) 10:37, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at Wikipedia talk:Notability (people)#WP:POLITICIAN Issue, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 19:16, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) There's no need to template an admin. Try to assume good faith, that appears to be some sort of edit conflict. Swarm... —X— 19:27, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
Level 1 template does assume good faith. Also here is the removal of content in question.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 09:37, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Oh, please. Sending an administrator a level one policy notification template (as if they don't know they can't delete other people's comments) is about as unnecessary and passive-aggressive as you can get. That's why we have WP:DTTR. Obviously I looked at the "removal" in question, and considering it consists of a duplicate edit summary and an updated time stamp, it can be presumed, and should be assumed, that it was an unintentional mistake. Company Article - Education at Work

Hi Orangemike,

I'm looking to create an article for "Education at Work". It seems that they previously attempted to make an article of their company on Wikipedia and that the draft was deleted. I'm looking to see if I could create an article with similar information on their behalf after removing all bias.

Thanks,

Mahmike7 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mahmike7 (talkcontribs) 15:55, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

If you are editing on their behalf, that's paid editing, which in my opinion as in that of many other editors has no place in Wikipedia or other Wikimedia projects. That said: please see this basic guide to conflict of interest editing here. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:38, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Orangemike,

This isn't a paid attempt. I'm a college student doing research on the company and noticed that there wasn't an article on the company. Can you be more specific on what I should do?

My username usurped, hence changed.

Hi, Mike. A user on German Wikipedia had "Raven" before I did and got it in the Global sortout, so I've added a dot to the front of my username, in case you look for me. – Raven .talk 16:25, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

I'd already made note of that, bro. Is the new Irgen map your work? --Orange Mike | Talk 17:45, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

You have blocked this editor for one week for disruptive editing, and he has posted an unblock request. As far as I can see his recent edits consist only of correcting a number of edits regarding Cornish place names to the consensus-agreed format of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom/UK. It seems to me that the disruption, if any, was in fact committed by the editor whose edits he corrected. Am I missing something? --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 11:59, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

It was my understanding that as part of the compromise that settled on that format, there was a consensus that such changes only be made as part of a larger, more substantive edit, not as freestanding edits. Serpren has been ignoring that stipulation. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:31, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
If you say so. But surely an change to the agreed format cannot merit a block? A warning, perhaps, if the consensus view is/was as complex as you say. The change which he made (three times) is a change which I might well have innocently made myself, had I happened to edit the article(s) in question. Would I have been blocked for so doing? --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 16:51, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
Had you done it the first time, and upon warning had ceased, then of course; but Serpen keeps doing it, admits he's wrong, then after the block expired has gone back to doing the exact same thing, without explanation except that he's right and others are wrong (and probably Celtic nationalists). --Orange Mike | Talk 17:44, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
Would you be willing to unblock if Serpren agreed to perform no mass changes at all? I.e. not modify anything following the word 'Cornwall' unless he is also making substantive changes to the article? EdJohnston (talk) 21:33, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
At Serpren's talk page I have linked (again) to the consensus he persistently ignores, and mentioned the elements of his favoured consensus that he also persistently ignores (as Orange Mike has explained). I'll overlook the allusion by Anthony Bradbury that I was editing disruptively. Ed Johnston's suggestion is a good one, but Serpren's is basically a single purpose account – he does little else but these placename changes. Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:48, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi, My article has been tagged by you for a speedy deletion request. Could you please elaborate me the reasons behind why that has been deleted. It was about the book and all the reference was given. Longevism speedy deletion

Hi, Mike. You deleted an article I created on longevism. Could you elaborate on your reasoning? In particular, could you respond to my contestation to the speedy deletion nomination and the changes I made to the page to emphasize the difference between longevism and longevity? I would like to know how to prevent my contributions to this subject from being deleted again. Thanks. --Haptic-feedback (talk) 05:14, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Neologisms like this must be sourced to reliable, neutral third-party sources. You did not make a case for the notability of this term or its recognition as a field separate from longevity activism and/or studies; instead, your edits and indeed the entire article seemed to be promotional in purpose, attempting to popularize the term and concept. See "up and coming next big thing". --Orange Mike | Talk 15:05, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
@Orangemike: Thanks for the feedback. I will address these concerns if I decide to recreate the article. --Haptic-feedback (talk)
Had you considered creating a section within the existing article longevity, where you would make your case for this as a separate concept worthy of note (an assertion, as you can tell, I find unconvincing)? --Orange Mike | Talk 19:59, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
@Orangemike: With the current length of the longevism article, I admit that it might be appropriate to include it as a section of another article instead. I think it would be a better fit in the articles on life extension, the anti-aging movement, or transhumanism, though. However, given the differences between longevism and each of these other topics, along with the notability of the subject as demonstrated in the article's talk page, this does not seem to be necessary. If it is any consolation, I do plan on expanding the article after I do more research. --Haptic-feedback (talk) 14:53, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

I am now very concern and feel an administrator's intervention may be needed. The answer, I received, does not make any sense. Thank youRFD (talk) 10:40, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Question

You recently blocked (twice) an editor (Serpren) for editing against consensus, making bulk edits of adding "England" or "England, UK" to articles about Cornwall. He seems to have understood the message and has made no further edits of that type. But in quite a few places where Serpren's wording was either reverted or removed [10], another editor has reinstated Serpren's wording,[11] claiming that once that wording had been used, it should stay, per the Wikipedia:WikiProject Cornwall/Guideline. It seems to me that's no better than what Serpren was doing, but I'm not really sure. I joined in a (rather uncivil) discussion on that user's talk page but he basically told me to get lost. Thoughts? Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:21, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

I'd say that it's not worth getting into an argument about, as long as that second editor is also making substantive edits. --Orange Mike | Talk 22:38, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
I suppose he makes substantive edits elsewhere, but with these he's also clearly trying to make a point. I'm with you on avoiding an argument though, he does appear to be somewhat tedious and aggressive. I'll see how often he makes that kind of edit. Thanks, Bretonbanquet (talk) 22:57, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Forest of Dean

Are you aware that the link which you reverted goes to the identical site that has been linked from there for years? I don't see any explicit guidance that government-funded tourism development sites like that one should not be linked, per WP:ELNO, but please corrrect me if I'm wrong. Ghmyrtle (talk) 15:32, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

They've moved the server hosting. The old domain name now redirects to the new domain name. It is ridiculous for you to have reverted this change like this. It is lazy (there is no better word) to make such a reversion without first checking where both these links go (as I did when I first saw their edit).

If you see the new URL as "spam", then perhaps there would be a case for removing it altogether. You didn't do this though, you just restored a now-broken domain name.

You then blocked the user. You didn't even block them as a "shared account name" (we're bad at explaining this one to new account holders creating accounts) - you blocked them as commercial spammers. For a one-edit account! Even the _worst_ of our spammers get treated better than that. (Have you seen the edit history at air filter lately?)

The Wye Valley and Forest of Dean Tourism Association is the official board promoting tourism in this area. It's as close to an "official" web EL as any similar sort of geographical area is going to get. This is not "spam" by any sensible meaning. If we did decide to remove it (which would be way beyond precedent for WP:OSE) such a removal would need great tact, at the least.

Wikipedia has an awful reputation in this area, particularly with local government. Because of the obvious bad history there is still the story circulating that getting one's town covered at WP is a matter of paying money to an official Wikimedia representative. As someone who was a local councillor nearby and has been publicly outed as a "Wikipedia editor" (I wish this was secret and that I didn't have my own username so embarassingly visible) I've personally suffered from insinuations of commercial non-probity as a result of this. To then block a local tourist organisation (whilst welcoming the one that did put up the money) just perpetuates this story. When I next see a few local people, I fully expect to be asked about this directly and yet again I will have to make an excuse for WP's / WMUK's behaviour, just to get my own arse off the hook.

You owe this editor an apology at the very least. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:40, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Andy, obviously I was wrong about the reversion, and I thank you and the other editor for calling me on it. As to the other: a tourism board is a commercial enterprise, a tool of the tourism industry, as much as User: Bob's Best Bloodpuddings would be a tool of Bob's etc., dedicated to getting as many people as possible to come in, spend their money, and then leave. It is not a charitable or public entity of any kind. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:44, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Americans.

Hi, just a rapid prompting. Next time, when you'll be constructing articles about American people, please utilize the appropriate link (i.e. "Americans" not United States). I've just settled certain of the articles made by you. Best. -- JenniTheEmpress  17:09, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

?? When I write about an "American", I pipe to United States; I've never used the abbreviation 'USA'! --Orange Mike | Talk 17:41, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Suspected promotional IP

The IP adress in this and this discussion is suggesting the inclusion of subtopics in the article that were once made by Brunasofia (talk · contribs), a confirmed employee of the Arrowsmith Program. These edits were removed by an admin some months back because they were not neutral. Now this IP is encouraging the inclusion of these same promotional subtopics in the article. What's more suspicious is that this IP has no other editing history aside from encouraging these promotional edits. See what you can do about it. Thanks--Taeyebaar (talk) 15:57, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mike. The IP had restricted themselves to suggesting edits on the talk page, which is perfectly acceptable, even if they do have connections with the subject. They have not been disruptive there . The only edit they have made to the article was a perfectly valid one. See my comments at Talk:Arrowsmith School#Removal of relevant, reliably sourced text which explain why I have restored the substance of the information and taken personal responsibility for it. Voceditenore (talk) 16:47, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
For background on Taeyebaar's behaviour with respect to this article, see this previous warning from another administrator (Zad68). Voceditenore (talk) 16:55, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
  • The edits made by user Brunasofia, which the IP is now encouraging, was removed by administrator Drmies, not me. And it was removed for good reason, because they were not neutral. So to accuse me now, is not acceptable. And no for a connected user to insert promotional content, based on anecdotes is unacceptable. The edit war was reverting a paid editor, who was banned and who's version was re-stored, intentionally or unintentionally. See my response to Zad68 which went unanswered.--Taeyebaar (talk) 17:47, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
  • It's also notable that the IP is accusing the critical sources from cognative scientists as being possible competitors [12]. This was the same accusation hurled against me and User:JzG by a probable cogmed employee who accused anyone of adding anything negative about cogmed of being employed by Lumosity, a competitor in the 'brain training' industry. And for the record Dr Emma Burrows, one of many neuoroscientists who criticized the program as scam, has no affinity to LDB Austrailia--Taeyebaar (talk) 18:05, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Massive socking, I have semi-protected the article and talk for a while. Guy (Help!) 21:43, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Query about a block

Hello, Mike. You placed a "spamusername" block at User talk:Overbergcommunity.co.za. The editor made an unblock request at User talk:41.13.216.65, so I have directed him to repeat the request on his account's talk page. However, I am doubtful about a spamusername block. Certainly the username conflicts with policy, but I don't see how any of the edits can be regarded as "intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes": every one of them consists of removing links that might have been considered promotional. Is there any reason why I shouldn't replace the spamusername block with a username block, together with a warning about editing with a conflict of interest? The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 14:04, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

The name is that of a website which seeks to be the website for/about that community; the edits consisted of removing links to competitors, which is one way of editing in one's own interest. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:50, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Corporate names

It's true that corporate names technically fall afoul of the username policy. However, it's common practice at UAA to only block them if they've actually promoted anything related to that name. Which is why I left them a warning. --Jakob (talk) aka Jakec 21:40, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Per WP:ADMINACCT, I am asking you to respond the above comment, which relates to your block of the user GDA Publishing. As I stated, it's common practice to not block such names unless they're promoting an actual entity by that name. --Jakob (talk) aka Jakec 15:56, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
In this case, there can be no doubt that the username is corporate in nature, which I feel falls within the spirit of UAA, particularly since it was the softerblock, which invites the editor to abandon the inappropriate username in favor of a more acceptable on, and puts no obstacles in their way. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:39, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

Help vs snarky comments

I've been spending a lot of effort trying to help the editor responsible for these stubs, and to fix things where I can, and else tag or comment. I had other things to do today, so didn't have the time to look for a link. I'm glad you did, but I think the criticism in your edit summary [13] is both unfair and uncalled for. Sheesh. As the days go by, I wonder more and more why I bother spending any time contributing, given the lack of appreciation shown. Speaking of "easily done", the editor responsible for these stubs should be going through their own history and finding and fixing their many, many bad edits. I've looked through over 500 of their edits and fixed everything I could find (and mea culpa I didn't take an extra couple of minutes to find this link, but I was about to leave for the day), but I spent a lot of time otherwise over the past few days. Not good enough to prevent criticism though!

Sorry, but I'm feeling particularly unappreciated right now. I know you've been around much longer than me, so go ahead, jump on me. Treat me like your edit summary suggests you think I need to be treated - no thanks for what I have done, but attack me with snark because I didn't find one link. But spend no time fixing the root problem I and a couple of other editors have been trying to fix - the many bad edits, and the unrepentant editing, of another long term contributor.

As I said, why do I bloody bother. JoeSperrazza (talk)

Your point is very well made, Joe, and I hereby formally apologize for the aforementioned snark. Somebody else had falsely claimed that this fact was not a fact, and I got a bit cranky.
Separately, let me thank you for the cleanup of the problems created by the still-unexplained behavior of somebody I'd long thought of as a useful contributor.
And of course, having been around here longer than you, even if true, would no more justify my "jumping on" you, than my position as a wielder of the Mop-and-Bucket; indeed, it means I should be more careful to maintain civility and collegiality. So once more, let me solemnly and formally apologize. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:52, 21 June 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Marriage abroad

The article Marriage abroad has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No significant coverage of this Wisconsin statue in WP:RS, fails WP:GNG

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. While objective prose about beliefs, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion." In reviewing some of the details of the page, could the page be included without the segments which do not include the prohibited material. Thank you.PoliticalClearinghouse (talk) 02:13, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

What you posted was apparently a blatant cut-and-paste of a campaign website; as a copyright violation, that got it killed right away. As is normal for such sites, the language was not neutral anyway, but rather dedicated to making the subject sound important (and worthy of a vote).
Neutral point of view is not optional here; it is at the heart of what we do. You have to establish, first of all, that the subject is notable enough that there should be an article about him. Mere candidacy for office is not sufficient; neither is membership on the DNC, nowadays. Follow these links to see whether he even qualifies: WP:BIO, WP:GNG and WP:POLITICIAN.
If the subject is in fact notable, then we need reliable sources for information. This means newspaper and magazine articles, passages in books, and the like, not blogs and internet forums. Online "publications" must be substantial (not necessarily non-partisan), with serious editorial policies, fact-checking and the like, not some guy in his dad's garage who declares himself an online news service.
Read articles on politicians who were famous when you were a kid, see what we have about them and where we got, and above all the tone of the article. We don't aim for bright and colorful (although it's nice), we aim for factual and encyclopedic. This isn't a newsmagazine, it's an encyclopedia: I just spent hours writing an article on August Zinn, a jeweler who spent two terms in our state assembly over a hundred years ago, because that's what I do to spread knowledge of my hometown's history.
And if you have any hint of a conflict-of-interest, if anybody paid or wants to pay you to create an article like this, you must either not do it (my strong preference), or else disclose along every step of the way what your COI is, what you are doing, etc.; and all the stuff about neutral point-of-view, reliable sourcing, etc. becomes more vital than ever.
Andy by the way: article titles don't include honorifics like Dr., Rev., Senator, etc. Just plain Damian Stone would have been the way to go. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:39, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Thank you again Orangemike. In reviewing the criteria for submitting a new Wikipedia page, it is evident that there were obvious mistakes regarding the content and the manner in which it was submitted. Keep up the great work with Wikipedia, and it is evident that the best interest of Wikipedia is your fundamental goal, and that is a commendable endeavor. One brief question, would the sandbox be where to submit material for consideration. PoliticalClearinghouse (talk) 02:47, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

No, a sandbox is for experimenting, or for very, very, very simple drafts (so you can work out things like how footnotes work). Once you've got something that can be dignified with the term "first draft", then Draft:Damian Stone would be the place to start the serious polishing. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:49, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Black Lives Matter

In view of the increased interest of #BlackLivesMatter, I would suggest that Wikipedia stop being so harsh on people. Wikipedia should not be like a violent, white policeman killing a Black person. Regarding User:American Thoracic Society, Wikipedia practices should be changed so that these people are contacted first, not a immediate block.

I see politicians articles all the time where a user is clearly very supportive or very opposed to the politician and may be a member of a political party. These conflicts of interests are never addressed. Yet, people like the American Thoracic Society are routinely mistreated. There should be discussion and an end to this. It makes Wikipedia look bad. So much so, that I have converted from a reader to an editor to say this.

I would encourage you to participate in changing this attitude. Martian Thoracic Society (talk) 03:58, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

The ATS account did not just tinker with, but drastically changed the article about their organization. I stopped that. Your analogy is clueless and trivializes one of the most important issues of our lifetimes. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:46, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by first reading the guide to appealing blocks, then adding the following text below this notice: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

During a dispute, you should first try to discuss controversial changes and seek consensus. If that proves unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection.  Magog the Ogre (tc) 16:21, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Mike. I just happened upon the article in question over lunch, and I saw significant edit warring. You were the primary edit warrior, edit warring against multiple partirs, and were the only one who violated 3RR. You also abused the rollback tool. Worse, you used the admin tools to block someone with whom you were in this dispute. Frankly, this type of behavior that gets people's admin bits removed. (Note: I have no desire to see this happen right now; I am just trying to bring perspective).

I have done this reluctantly; I dont want drama any more than you do. I have no axe to grind on either side of this dispute. But you were clearly the aggressor in this dispute. Magog the Ogre (tc) 16:34, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

I strongly disagree, since the edits were all the same vandalistic sort, removing sourced content which was long-established by consensus. But in the interest of peace and harmony, I shall not appeal the block. I do wish that somebody else would monitor this article, since the Trumpets and other anti-immigrant activists have clearly decided to impose their POV on the article. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:55, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

Good Life CEO article

Orangemike, Yesterday, our firm posted an article on our firm's CEO... www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conor_Delaney. This article is meant to be informative and to point out specific historical facts that were along the journey of our leader. We wanted Wikipedia because of the firm's respect to the platform and content that Wiki has for almost any person/company of significance. Must to our frustration and disappointment, within 5 minutes our page was deleted, the account was locked, and we were back to square one. We have reached out to you to ask for help in becoming compliant with the extensive rules of Wikipedia. While it took you 10 minutes to delete 5 hours of our work, it has been 15 hours without a response. Your page indicates that you are willing to help... We would like to take you up on that.

Wikipedia is not for promotion, for smarmy blather about "facts that were along the journey of our leader" and the like. As one of my colleagues is prone to say, please have the decency to wait until somebody else, somebody who does not have your blatant conflict of interest, finds evidence that you (and I gather from the e-mail address that you left that this is Conor Delaney himself writing to me, despite the weaselly use of the third person) are notable enough to merit an article about in a global encyclopedia. Such an article would NOT be filled with inspirational-magazine crap like, and I quote here, "Delaney would take this experience and completely restructure his vision and his goal for life. It became about leaving an impact on others, doing something great, and honoring family" What deluded you into thinking that sort of fluffy pap had any place in an encyclopedia???????? --Orange Mike | Talk 14:52, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

The "Reconquista ad," Absolut, etc. 7 years later

Hello Orangemike. You may or may not recall an editing controversy some time ago about an Absolut vodka ad that offended some political bloggers and brought in a lot of editors keen to include it in the page on Absolut vodka. I took a look at the page again on a lark and found that the references had more or less vanished and that the subsection on it was primarily a quote from a competitor trying to capitalize on the incident. I've removed the section as not noteworthy and lacking citations. Just thought I'd let you know as you were the main prominent editor involved in editing on this business. The rabbit in the suitcase (talk) 11:47, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

"Once notable, always notable." What happened was what we call "link rot". The solution is not to delete the section, but to replace dead links with live ones. See WP:LINKROT for further guidance. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:50, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
When was this story notable? The story was "a bunch of blogs are talking about this, it's 2008 and my job is to cover what's happening on blogs." The rabbit in the suitcase (talk) 15:45, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) It is fairly trivial to find RS discussing the ad and its controversy (in addition to the mounds of non-RS blogs talking about it). Additionally the link rotted ones are probably available via wayback. [14] [15][16][17][18] Gaijin42 (talk) 15:06, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

vmoney article and talk page deletion

Hi Orangemike,

I was just wondering if i could get any clarification on why the vmoney page and talk page were both pulled. I understand that the page was considered as advertising, however, i did not receive any clarification on the subject and if my suggested edits were acceptable for the page. It was modeled after the "salarium" page which has been up for quite sometime, that is why i am a little unclear on deletion. Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vince Manning (talkcontribs) 08:15, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

"a list of VMoney's accomplishments" is another way of saying, promotional fluff. The sources were all weak, including YouTube videos and press releases; and the language included talk of "solutions", a sure toxic sign of promotional language. I would suggest requesting a new article be created by somebody without your apparent financial interest in the topic. You are required by our terms of service to disclose your financial interest in this company before you go any further. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:55, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for the reply. As previously stated I have no financial interest in the creation of this article, however, this is my first attempt at getting something published and am unclear on the guidelines. I just have a final question regarding this issue; I modeled this article after the Salarium page and would just like to know how the two are different. Would just want clarification on this so I can use the pointers for any possible future attempts at page creation. Thank you again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vince Manning (talkcontribs) 07:38, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

Certainly I read them. There is nothing notable about having an IMDb listing; heck, I've got one, and I'm certainly not notable. Wikipedia is not for something you made up in your basement one day, be it a "web network" or a "YouTube channel". If so far nobody has paid attention to what you're doing (other than your classmates' blogs and your hometown shopping paper), then by definition you are not yet "notable" as we define it here. Someday, you may become notable enough to merit an article in an encyclopedia (yes, I am assuming you are Merlin); but that time is not now. Editor using multiple accounts to edit one article

Hello, I noticed someone at the Help Desk asking numerous questions is editing using an account and as an anonymous IP - Sirbernadette and 125.168.85.156 - to edit the same articles, such as Lupton family and Pippa Middleton. I'm not sure how many others there may be. On the Help Desk, they posted Lupton family as the IP, then Lupton family 2 and Lupton family 3 using their account name. So I don't think they are trying to hide that they are the same person. I read the "Contributing to the same page or discussion with multiple accounts" provision at WP:SOCK, which says that someone cannot use more than one account to edit the same page, unless they identify themselves as having alternative accounts. I don't see anything on those two accounts that indicates they are alternative accounts. I thought I should mention this to an administrator and I saw your name on the Help Desk page. Czoal (talk) 00:16, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

That's not using multiple accounts; that's just editing while not logged in, a behavior which is not forbidden unless undertaken specifically to conceal one's identity and/or evade a block, ban, etc. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:49, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Deal Barracks bombing

I added a bit as requested by a survivor. And although I have no idea of wiki practice I do have to walk the line myself because I don't want to end up giving anyone too much of a free fishing expedition into the case files. The report I sent Lord Carlile 2013 is over 200 pages.

It may be best to wait to see what Theresa May responds re scope of National Crime Agency inquiry into corruption in Lawrence Inquiry.

Someone tidied up my first contribution a treat. And being edited just shift me back from the immediate task of fighting for justice and truth.

The problem with the 1987 arrests for paramilitary activity out of Kent is that they were D noticed and only Adscene a local free sheet and Invicta Radio Kent carried reports.

The James Shortt wiki entry I think doesn't detail his Deal Barracks history so not as powerful a linkie as could be the case.

The matter of CID stealing evidence at bomb scene and exempting Reliance from inquiry emerged in the Phillip SEED custody death Margate Police station. In 1998 during Lawrence Inquiry the Attorney General John Morris ordered nothing to be put in writing. The charity Inquest had a free barrister on the case and they were in turn associated with British Irish Rights Watch in the Farrell Savage McCann case against HMG in ECHR The Thanet Coroner proposed in 98 to hold inquest with Coroners offiucer on holiday leaving only a prepared statement. IE to avoid cross examination by Inquest the charity barrister re Deal Barracks bombing and deputy senior CID Deal bombing case who was PCA invigilator in the custody death. But a blood sample anomaly in custody death had arisen among allegations a blood sample had been doctored. I dare say that this coming out at the time Kent Police had unsealed the Lawrence case evidence was not a welcome development at the Attorney General office.

But Thanet HM Coroner stood down and a new inquest was held by functus officio Deal Barracks bombing inquest HM Coroner. And no Section 13 Coroners Act 1988 appeal to secret interest custodianship of attorney general occurred.

This is all subject of my High Court statements of truth.

So let's see what Theresa May replies to my MP ?RichardREME (talk) 15:16, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

All this should be at Talk:Deal barracks bombing, not here. And remember that other editors may not be as familiar as you with all the terminology you're using. See also what we do and do not consider a "reliable source" for our purposes. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:01, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Orangemike. I noticed that you indefinitely protected this talk page back in 2013. Although the policy is silent on this issue, in my opinion, talk pages should only be protected indefinitely in the case of serious and ongoing disruption. Although there was some disruption to Talk:Smelting in 2013, I can't see any good reason to continue with indefinite protection of this page. Would you consider removing the protection? If disruption resumes, of course, I would not object to the protection being reinstated (although preferably not "indefinite" protection). Thanks, — This, that and the other (talk) 00:51, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

Of course. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:48, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

Orangemike,

Hey there, I hope you've been doing well lately !

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Please help

You recently put an editing ban on this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Graduate_School after it had been repeatedly tampered with and as the company put it "vandalized". The European Graduate School would like to remove the article from Wikipedia while they get their credible sources together. The no editing ban is set for an indefinite time period. Could you lift the ban or delete the article ? Thanks Sachamcd (talk) 22:27, 14 January 2016 (UTC)Sachamcd

The subject has no right to ask that the article be deleted, just because they'd rather write a more favorable version. Can you imagine allowing Donald Trump or Kim Il-sung or Marine Le Pen to choose what kind of article we had about them? --Orange Mike | Talk 01:42, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

You deleted this in 2008 because it was deleted in 2005. Since then there was additional coverage such as this 2009 review and this 2010 review which makes me wonder if it might have become notable enough since years ago to warrant mention in an article. Ranze (talk) 04:47, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

One of those reviews is from a very obscure site; the other, from a site known for finding the worst junk they can stumble upon, in order to mock them mercilessly. I don't feel the sum of coverage meets our standards of notability. If they did, at any point, well then "Once notable, always notable" is a rule of thumb. I just don't think they qualify. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:16, 25 January 2016 (UTC)

Ahmed Saad Al-Azhari

Dear Orange Mike. I understand from your page you have a tendency to delete unworthy articles - this is why I am approching you for help as I want my article to be held in the utmost scrutiny.

A little bit of history: I created a page for an individual known as Ahmed Saad Al-Azhari, however as I didn't want to forget my username for this project, I inappropriately used a username that connected me to the subject. I even admit this in a conversation with an administrator when using the ahmedsaad.ihsaninstitute username. Anyway, you have rightly blocked access to this.

I still feel there should be an article on this chap so I have re-written it (previous attempts used too many references from the chaps website). Please let me know what you think. I am trying not to make it promotional, however I feel there needs to be an article on him due to his media appearances and influence in combating extremism. I have also been made aware that I have used rotting links, however I am trying to reference the BBC's program called 'Doha Debates' which Ahmed Saad appeared on, however the link is dead, and the only refereces that seem available are from you tube. Shall I just stick to the you tube links when citing the doha debates?

Feel free to give me any other advice.

Thank you for your time. Please also see the logs under the blocked username ahmedsaad.ihsaninstitute. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Imran 108 (talkcontribs) 19:33, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi-I started an article about a Minnesota state legislator Lee Greenfield. Request for unprotection

Hi Orangemike. I noticed you indefinitely fully protected European Graduate School back in November. From the edit history, I can't figure out what there was that justified such a high protection level, but more than three months have passed, so I'd like to request that you unprotect the page or reduce the protection level so that editors like me can improve the page. Thank you. —Granger (talk · contribs) 03:07, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there is at least one outspoken EGS advocate and a couple of sock- or meatpuppets out there who continue to attempt to get the article re-written to the subject's satisfaction. What kinds of edits would you propose? --Orange Mike | Talk 08:52, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I only have some minor cleanup in mind, so I'll make an edit request or two. I just think it's a bad idea in general to have articles that are indefinitely fully protected—wouldn't it be better to block the main COI account and use semi-protection to guard against sockpuppets? But I guess if the editor is persistent enough, that wouldn't be effective. —Granger (talk · contribs) 13:38, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

Stephen Tharp

Hi,

I see that you deleted a page in 2008, for assumingly appropriate reasons. Today, however, one user created this page, which, while not encyclopedic yet, and more importantly, with a title infringing the MoS, was marked for deletion. Obviously, it cannot be redirected to Stephen Tharp unless an Administrator does that. I don't know what you think I should do, but it would be worth creating, as the organist is a well noted organist. Perhaps I should create a Draft:Stephen Tharp, and you could review it and redirect it to an actual article?

Let me know. Cheers! Damibaru (talk) 21:27, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

Creating Draft:Stephen Tharp is definitely the way to go. The deleted "article" was a shameless advertisement for the same guy, apparently written by his press agent or some marketing hack; so the references in the draft need to be good, solid ones which not only assert but document the guy's notability. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:10, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I think I created that page. It has some problems, though. (See its talk page.) Thank you very much! Damibaru (talk) 14:13, 6 March 2016 (UTC)

An article that had been deleted after you had prodded it, The Socialist (US newspaper) has been restored. It was requested at WP:REFUND. -- GB fan 19:24, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi, did you miss the "Contested deletion" on 715815909? The "blatant copyvio" wasn't clear, it could be an ordinary case of a missing OTRS-permission from a new contributor working for the depicted person, and a photographer also working for the depicted person. The chances that they'll fix this are presumably lousy, but not as bad as in "blatant copyvio". –Be..anyone 💩 08:24, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

Block question

Do you mind telling me in a little more detail what this is about? I'm assuming there's some deleted edits that I can't see. The editor popped up on my radar as part of the as part the SPI into 089baby. Based your comments this editor is probably unrelated, but I'd like to be sure. Thanks in advance. Sir Sputnik (talk) 03:54, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Sure. User:Majesticmanagement is apparently a sports management company; their only edits have been to promote a footballer named Rasheed Omokafe, allegedly a Nigerian playing for a Cambodian side. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:59, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

I think this one might be dealt with differently. The blanking from this editor wasn't vandalistic or promotional blanking; the content in question was a blatant BLP violation against the subject of the article, and the editor claims (believably to me) to be the subject of the article. Am I missing something here? --jpgordon::==( o ) 05:32, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

As it was a blatant BLP violation, I've rev-deleted the edits. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 08:53, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
I'm surprised that you reverted their edit from James Otto which was removing clearly a disruptive, vandalistic edit. Did you look at the content before you reverted? Liz Read! Talk! 15:26, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

I apparently did wrong in reverting the edit overhastily, and I thank those who caught this: you done good.

The name, though, is clearly a corporate/group one. If the editor is in fact James Otto, then he needs to agree to abide by COI rules, and then request a change of username, either to plain User:James Otto or to something more neutral. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:32, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks so much for the quick action on Msav123 et al!HappyValleyEditor (talk) 23:07, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

He's been editing on his clients' behalf for almost ten years now; I'm stunned he though he could get away with it. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:18, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
