Testament Albums

Thx for the tips :) I am scraping the bottom of the barrel for citations even halfway edible, albums are so old nothing was online then. Bouncing around Testament albums with what I can find or anything obvious hoping to find information that can be cross referenced to help other album pages. Some have little more than a single sentence for an article. --West Horizon (talk) 07:08, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
As a follow up, both Prosthetic ref's have been re-cited or removed. I rewrote one paragraph to take out info no longer cited. Figuring that wasn't a good ref I removed/replaced the ref to Spitfire Records official site also for The Gathering (Testament album). Changed the bad refs to links and moved to "Externals" section.
You can almost read the entire article without scrolling down, does it really need a ToC? Also broke up the Demonic (album) page I was adding stuff too into sections like you did with The Gathering so the layouts are kinda uniform-ish. --West Horizon (talk) 11:11, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Lincoln final smile

The smile weakly statement was known to have come from this source. The mouth was set in a very slight smile, the eyebrows were arched, and the eyes were closed. Sources used: Kennedy and Lincoln: Medical and Ballistic Comparisons of Their Assassinations by Dr. John K. Lattimer, Twenty Days by Dorothy Meserve Kunhardt and Philip B. Kunhardt, Jr., Memorial Record of the Nation's Tribute to Abraham Lincoln by B.F. If you have all these sources and these sources categorically state that "Lincoln smiled weakly", then you need to use the citations (with page numbers, etc.) to achieve that. I have left you a "how-to" link on your 92.15.136.120 talk page. And, seriously, shouldn't you register for an account? Cole and Roe

Alvin Karpis revealed in his 1980 memoir On the Rock that he'd been serving as lookout on the day when Cole and Roe made their swim. There was a heavy fog and also floodwaters running through the Golden Gate from recent storms in the San Joaquin Valley which had completely isolated many communities for days. Cole and Roe got into the water and started to swim. Within a minute or two, Karpis said, he say their heads disappear as they were pulled under. Then please source the information at the Cole and Roe article, don't just tell me about it here on my talk page...that doesn't help the article. Your original edit and your subsequent reversion of my valid correction is apparently a cut&paste of previously-deleted content with no cited sources (complete with a "citation needed|date=July 2012" maintenance template).
  • If you know this information to be somehow "True" and
  • you can WP:VERIFY this information with a cited source and
  • you have access to this source, then

Request for your assistance for The Wikipedia Library

Hi! You signed up to be a helper at the Highbeam project page. As The Wikipedia Library expands, I am seeking some assistants who can collaborate on project administration by spending a few hours now and then working on a variety of tasks.

Right now I am looking for help on the Questia round 1 signups, reviewing editors' applications to check for edit count (1000), account history (1 year), and current blocks. Note, there is no subjective judgment required, just a factual criteria-check. Here's what you can do:

  1. Sign up for a section of 50 applications at this page
  2. The first check involves using Popups (enabled in Special:Preferences -> click "Gadgets", check the box to enable Popups, then click save).
  3. By hovering over a username on the applications list, Popups will show the edit count, age of account, and whether the editor is blocked on English Wikipedia
  4. If an editor is blocked, list their name at this page
  5. If an editor does not meet the 1-year/1000 editor check using Popups, open their user talk page in a new tab in your browser.
  6. Then, you then need to check if the editor meets the criteria on another Wikipedia language project.
  7. To check global contributions use the Global Contributions surveyor] on toolserver.
  8. Toolserver is a bit slow so I find it helpful to have 3 tabs running simultaneously.
  9. Scroll down to the bottom of the toolserver results to see if 1000 edits or 1-year age of accounted are met at another project. You can also see if the editor is blocked on another project.
  10. If neither Popups nor the Global Contribution Surveyor met the criteria, then list their name at [less than 1000 edits, or less than 1 year old account|this page]
  11. Mark your section {{done}} at this page

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Sometimes, I didn't do anything and I get notes. Wikipedia has been very rough. You probably wouldn't know that. Also, on my talk page I left him a message. I understand your concern for him, but I just didn't like how he didn't know how professional my information was. Also, I have NO idea where to put the verifiability resource. I created a new section and then the headline disappeared and I was tacked onto the end of the kitty picture.

I titled it "Thanks for the links and help." and it worked and then I edited it and then then something spliced the two together - not that I have any problem with kitties.

You have wrote that this article is not "significant & important" enough to be added to wiki. Thanks for the links and help.

As an outsider newbie (getting to be a really old newbie), I tend to fumble around a lot - but I find what works and stick with it.

Here's my current dilemma:

There are ample citations that the Emperor's new clothes are simply divine!

When I try to point out that the emperor has no clothes I get hit with "no original research!".

(concerning orange) I get the distinct impression I'm being asked "who are you going to believe, a citation or your lyin' eyes?".

I've tried reading the help files, but having been written by people who already understand - they don't understand what I don't understand and tend to be of little actual help.

For instance, I just wanted to include a picture clearly showing the helmet stripe color is different than the sleeve colors.

But the uploading of a simple picture to a talk page put so many hurdles that I had to find another way.

In short, I'm not interested in taking the time of a college course in how to do things here. I think this place is very off-putting in that regard. Luckily I'm a stubborn cuss.

I also think there should be an area within, or maybe a sister site where things classified as "original research" can be sent to so that they won't be lost due to overly strict rules.

Call it the wikimudpen area or something. With a whole community of "new research", then people can check and maybe say "hey, I know a citation that will help you"..

Melungeon page

I went thru the past edits of people trying to keep the page updsted and Rwe has a bad history of removing anything added with the new up to date material. Also the section added from Joanne is one of the founders of the melungeon DNA project. Which makes Joanne a reliable source for the DNA dicussion section. Here is also a email directly from family tree dna on the melungeon DNA which states different from what the melungeon opage states...this being a email from who actually did the testing on the DNA.

It reveals ethnic origins. There's no such thing as a "Portuguese" or "Melungeon" test. The R1b1 group includes about 40% of Western Europe, which would include Spain and Portugal. However, the Iberian Peninsula also had waves of invaders from Northern Africa. The Moors ruled there for over 800 years so they left their genetic stamp, which is the origin of the E1b1 haplogroup in Spaini and Portugal. Only through SNP testing can specific clusters be identified.

Then the final group suspected of being Melungeon is Native American, and that Q1 haplogroup is just barely represented, but that's not unusual because we just don't have many men who have a direct paternal line in the Q haplogroup.

Again, haplogroups only show broad geographic areas of origin. SNP testing is required to pinpoint more specific locations and to do that you have to have enough participants to be able to group.

The admins of the Melungeon Project aren't hiding anything. The haplogroups and markers you see listed on the results pages are directly fed from FTDNA and they do not have an option of hiding any of them.

I looked at both templates, and it appeared to me that the Level 1 was more intended for a wholly benign deletion of comments, since it discusses copy-editing others' comments, as well as basic rules of Wikipedia. Is there a guideline against skipping levels? If so, I was not aware of it, and I apologize to both you and Charles35. Or is your point that his actions did not warrant beginning with a Level 2? My rationale was that he was clearly aware of what he was doing, and even included a message explaining that he was deleting WhatamIdoing's comments because "[he] would not let that be said about [him]." Is that insufficient rationale to start with a level 2? It didn't strike me as particularly harsh... it seemed like the appropriate response to an intentional but not altogether malicious deletion: It doesn't accuse the respondent of anything outright, but it also doesn't beat around the bush. But, as I said, if I'm misunderstanding the process here, or if the situation didn't warrant a Level 2, I truly apologize. Problem

Something is wrong with my preferences. I wonder if you can assist. Have I been vandalized????

  • I not longer get the editing toolbar.
  • Nothing happens when I try to reset my preferences.
  • The search box doesnt work while Im on a page editing.
I'm not very tech-y, but have you tried to sign onto WP from another computer, to see if it's something on your system or an issue between your account & WP, no matter what computer you're using? Could something have gone off with your browser or maybe could your computer have a virus or some kind of technical issue? If you've already gone into your preferences and tried to save, that's about all I got. I would ask in IRC, maybe try -en, there are usually a lot of more-accomplished coder/programmer types hanging out in there who might have better ideas. Just saw you did an archiving fix at this page and that you have participated in the article before[2]. Would you mind weighing in here Talk:Melungeon#Sourcing problem if you have the time? It actually still concerns the same IP editor and the same material as your edit that I linked above. A serious case of IDIDNTHEARTHAT has developed over the last few weeks and I am on the verge of losing patience and either throwing profanities at them or taking this to an admin board. The ref#2 was from the software publisher: The cartoon was created with there software and they wanted to keep that as a success story.

You said 'Montu miah' appears to be important to you but for an article on a subject to be part of Wikipedia, the editor who creates the article has to prove the subject is notable.

My reply Well it's not only important to me but Bengali entertainment community. This is the first cartoon created in Bangladesh and broacasted by a national TV channel.It's a history even in Indian subcontinent level.I have seen the articles in [notable] section; and with respect I think I have added 2 newspaper article with date of publications. And a reference link of the POSER software publisher. Which proves the authenticity of this article well enough.

There is no online resources to prove this except public blogs and stolen youtube clips.

I have added 3 newspaper article with date of publications even with page number. 2 of them was scanned and uploaded as Images. This in fact Provides referenced from multiple, published, independent Sources which you suggested.

Regarding lack of online live archive reference I asked help at Teahouse and they replied as below.

Yes, sure, in no time, but there are multiple issues–

  • Most probably, the title is wrong, it should be The Adventures of Montu Miah not, The Adventures of Montu miah (similar to Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn).
  • Most probably all images are copyvio, seems to be video screenshots!
  • Lack of citations and RS.
  • NPOV is disputed.
  • Some portion need to be Wikified.

I agree that there are many issues (POV, WIkifying, sources are unreliable, etc., etc.), but this editor is really new plus there is a language issue, I think that I am not explaining what has to be done so he can 'get' it. I understand that this subject is important to him but I can't even quite figure out if the subject is notable or not. And, of course, there are two versions of the AfC, the malformed Wikipedia:Articles for creation/The Adventures of Montu miah and the almost-proper WP:MOS title of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/The Adventures of Montu miah. An admin will probably have to do a histmerge to move all the text & editing history over to Wikipedia talk:Articles for Creation/The Adventures of Montu Miah or possibly to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/The Adventures of Montu miah, whichever seems to be best (I have no idea about naming conventions in Bengal...anything that you can do would be great, especially if we can keep this editor from becoming too upset about his content possibly not being accepted. Forgot to say — there's an easier way to check if a username has been registered. If you can see the "User contributions" link on the left side, the username has been registered. Try going to the userspace of the nonexistent User:SHEARONINK — you'll get a "This user doesn't exist" warning, and you won't see any links going to Special:Contributions/SHEARONINK, but you were able to see easily that Nicole had no edits because that link was there. You're right about the 'See also' mention, but sometimes edits on fast-moving articles edits can be done at the same time, and, anyway, can't revert my edit summary...the information is still correct, though. Edits to Sexual Conflict

Hello Shearonink! I deleted content from the "Sexual Conflict" page because the article was written very poorly. I attempted to clean it up by removing content that was superfluous or incorrectly sourced (usually by an error in interpretation). I was just learning how to mark the page for an extensive rewrite when I received your message actually lol.

I would suggest that you do any or all of the following then:
  • Consider registering for an account. That will protect your identity (as it is, your IP is revealed to others now) and other editors can leave notes on your talkpage or work with you on articles.
  • If you wish to rewrite that article, post on the article's talk page saying that you're working on improving it.
  • Use edit summaries - they are an editor's friend.

Re: Henry Clay

I do agree that it is very overwhelming, and it should get trimmed back a little bit. My goal is to not have the Infobox exceed the "Early life and Political Career" section. I'm going to leave the Secretary of State and Speaker of the House part alone, because I think the historical value and knowledge on who proceeded and succeeded Clay in those offices are obviously more important than who was elected before him in the U.S. House. I typically don't edit articles about topics in the news, but I visited this talk page after editing the article to fix an accidental claim that Asa Hutchinson had headed a Liberian government agency (the Drug Enforcement Agency is not an alternate name for the Drug Enforcement Administration!), and I was quite surprised to see anything of a discussion about using retracted materials. Help or advice

I am trying to start what I believe is a page about an important topic. My submission has been rejected as not being "encyclopedic enough" and containing personal opinion, though virtually everything in my article is referenced from other sources and it contains no personal opinions (an I am not connected to this subject in any way). The article: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Cambridge Somerville Youth Study

Take a look at a few edits that I did to your AfC submission - Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Cambridge Somerville Youth Study - that should give you some ideas on how to proceed. I would also suggest that you go through the Wikipedia:Tutorial to help clear up any editing issues you think you might have. In looking at your draft, it does start to seem that most of the article is not about the Study itself but about McCord's follow-up and the possible fallout from her conclusions. You might want to find and use sources that are about the initial Study itself and not about the follow-up, otherwise the title would possibly need to be changed. I greatly appreciate the time you took to correct my edits (Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Cambridge Somerville Youth Study) and the comments and suggestions you left. It took me quite a while just to figure out how to leave an acknowledgement through Wikipedia (here). I am only trying to get at least a stub inserted for what I consider an important issue that is not currently referenced. I have no connection or relationship to the article or research beyond not finding it on Wikipedia. I am also a bit frustrated at the hoops that must be jumped through to get an article posted. As for your and the other editor's comments about this being about the follow-up and not the original study; The original study had no conclusion, the follow up was the actual collection of results; without the follow-up this was just a case of taking a bunch of boys to Boy Scouts in 1939 (while annoying another group of boys). How would I change the name of the article to "The Cambridge Somerville Youth Study and Follow-Up"? I will try to re-write my article in an appropriate fashion. Adding references can be easy

Hello! Here's how to add references from reliable sources for the content you add to Wikipedia. This helps maintain the Wikipedia policy of verifiability.

Adding well formatted references is actually quite easy:

  1. While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "Cite". Click on it.
  2. Then click on "Templates".
  3. Choose the most appropriate template and fill in as many details as you can. This will add a well formatted reference that is helpful in case the web URL (or "website link") becomes inactive in the future.
  4. Click on Preview when you're done filling out the 'Cite (web/news/book/journal)' to make sure that the reference is correct.
  5. Click on Insert to insert the reference into your editing window content.
  6. Click on Show preview to Preview all your editing changes.
  • Before clicking on Save page, check that a References header   ==References==   is near the end of the article.
  • And check that   {{Reflist}}    is directly underneath that header.
7.  Click on Save page. ...and you've just added a complete reference to a Wikipedia article.

Intentional links to disambiguation pages

Re this and related edits - the reasons DPL added the notification is because the hatnotes added to the other articles incorrectly linked directly to the disambiguation page instead of using the form with "(disambiguation)" in the title. FWIW, I believe the DPL bot will simply re-add the notice to the page until the direct links are fixed, so removing it is not very productive. If you don't want to fix the links yourself, you should leave the notice in place so other editors will notice and fix them. Cheers. older ≠ wiser 14:41, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Abraham Lincoln's final smile

I know I have been kicked off many times but after a wide-ranging search for the claim that Abraham Lincoln smiled a peaceful smile when he died, several accounts has come to light which partially supports this claim.


According to several accounts, as the president died, he smiled before his chest rose for the final time. And we know that shortly before he died, his breathing grew quieter, his face more calm. According to John Hay, as Lincoln died: "A look of unspeakable peace came over his worn features."

Even after Lincoln's death, there was still a smile on his lips:

These cited references say nothing about how Lincoln supposedly, himself, smiled this mythical last smile before he died. The text you are using states that 'the mouth was set in a very slight smile', meaning that the undertakers physically arranged the mouth into a smile instead of any other possible mouth/lips arrangement (just as they composed Lincoln's facial features including his eyebrows ("were arched") and eyes ("were closed"). Also, since I have realized that you have just posted an apparent copyright infringement upon my talkpage from Roger J. Krystal Nicole Meyers Page

I don't know if the format is right here but you edited things in the past tense (your edit referenced below)using an assumption not based in fact "since Meyers has retired from performing" On the one hand you are right "Meyers" has (she will be returing under her married name, except/unless where to promote her maiden name "Meyers" will help her audience to find her. So, to that degree you are right that "Meyers" has retired. But to change tense stating it is because she has retired is a fallacy because she has not. You are taking a part and expanding it to a broad fact, that it is not a fact (that's just making an assumption) but calling it one.

All the news I have seen online states that she *has* retired. If you have information from published reliable sources stating that she is going to start touring or recording again, please share it. I am sure that her many fans would want to know. As I see it, beside the many references that are in danger of linkrot, tweaking the word choices from, for example, "Meyers has been on the cover of Nylon" to "Meyers was on the cover of Nylon" certainly now indicates that she has stepped away from the business/retired...the verb-tenses in the article were referring to events in 2008 and before as if they were continuing on into the present...it's 2013 and Miss Meyers hasn't made a record or toured or been on a magazine cover or had her music in a TV-show ad in around 4 or 5 years, *so* I adjusted some of the verb-tenses to reflect that fact. As to edit-summaries...I was explaining why I was editing....that's why it's called an edit summary. None of my edits or the content I added or deleted from this article reflects anything but what I could find in verifiable reliable sources. I also improved the article by fixing bare URL references that are against WP guidelines, even though in one reference I might have inadvertently added some extra linkage...if you cut&paste article titles from some online sources, these other systems automatically add the URL for the story, which can sometimes make extra work for us. But seriously, I have no idea why you are trying to take me to task for something that I consider an internal editing courtesy to fellow editors, an edit summary.
