Disambiguation link notification for September 29

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Community Oriented Policing Services, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Director. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Note!

Hey all! I may take longer to respond to questions, or comments left for me on this talk page or in other places. I'm currently in tech-rehersal and then have a production run for Temptation where I'll be running sound. I probably won't be around much the next two weeks. Sorry!--Cameron11598 (Talk) 23:07, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Access to Oxford University Press Journals

Dear User:Cameron11598. I was recently given access to OUP journals through Wikipedia, but when I log-in to that venue, and I try to access one of the Journals listed by them (namely, "Journal of Theological Studies"), particularly the article published there by Cameron Mackay, entitled "The North Boundary of Palestine," I am asked again to give my username and password, and when I duly reply by giving the same information, I am denied access, or else asked to pay subscription costs. Is there a reason for this?Davidbena (talk) 23:24, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

@Davidbena:  Checking... --Cameron11598 (Talk) 23:51, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
@Davidbena: it looks as though your subscription may have expired. @Nikkimaria: and @Samwalton9: Could you verify that I'm reading the data correctly? Thanks! --Cameron11598 (Talk) 23:56, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
No - he was only approved in August 2016, his account shouldn't be expired yet (see the purple?). David, I've just tested using your login and it appears to be working correctly. Have you tried the fixes listed on the help page? Nikkimaria (talk) 00:40, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
For some reason I looked at it and saw 2015 instead of 2016 (just one of those synapse misfires). Sorry about that. Also thanks for the help Nikkimaria --Cameron11598 (Talk) 00:53, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

Cameron, I can't figure out how to answer your answer to my question. I tried e-mail, but it wouldn't allow me, saying something about authentication; it's an authentic e-mail addy, so I have no idea what's up with that. I wanted to thank you for your response to my questions; it was very helpful. One other question, if I may: can you use someone's autobiography or other books s/he's written as sources? And while I'm at it, how do you just go to a user's talk page and simply ask a question? Thank you very much for your help! Ginger-lyn Summer (and her six cats ;-) )

Ginger-lyn Summer (talk) 22:49, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

@Ginger-lyn Summer: I'm not understanding your question about the e-mail thing. But using someone's autobiography should generally be avoided, unless you have other independent Reliable Sources that confirm the other information as well. As to asking a user a question you can generally go to that user's talk page and click the small blue + at the top of the page located next to the History Button to start a new section on a user's talk page. Hope this helps. --Cameron11598 (Talk)

A question

Hey Cameron, I have a question regarding the OUP "Reference" website. I searched up a certain historical figure (Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher) in Oxford Reference, and I got two hits that seem to be interesting. However, how can I now actually further view the sources itself? Sorry if this is a really "newb-like" question, but we all have to start somewhere don't we, haha. Bests and thanks in advance - LouisAragon (talk) 16:50, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

@LouisAragon: I'm not certain as I don't actually have access to OUP myself. But I'd wager clicking on the title should give you the remainder of the source. The first one shows the source is only 98 words and the second is 372 words. I hope this helps. If not I'd suggest asking on the OUP Talk Page where someone who is more familiar with the resource can help. If you don't get a response there let me know and I'll ping someone who recently had their subscription renewed (they probably have more experience with the database than I would). --Cameron11598 (Talk) 19:52, 14 October 2016 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hello Cameron11598. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria.

  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. MusikAnimal talk 23:35, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

OUP approval process

Hi Cameron,

I'd just like to ask if there's a schedule for the next round of OUP approvals. There are currently three applications awaiting approval.

Thanks, — Kpalion(talk) 16:58, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

@Kpalion: I'm trying to hold off until I get our issue with Journals (the OUP rep that approves journals has been on leave) resolved before I begin approving the next round, so I don't have a bunch of accounts that are half approved. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 04:54, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Alright, thanks for the update! — Kpalion(talk) 08:34, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia:OUP

Hello. Just letting you know that I've left a request at Wikipedia:OUP. I would appreciate it a lot if this was approved now rather than for you to wait for the journal issue to be resolved, as I'd like to start citing the handbook I wikilinked to asap. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 16:04, 9 November 2016 (UTC)

Zigzig20s The issue was recently resolved. However I need to send batches of accounts for creation at once. I can't send accounts individually. I'll review your request and see if you meet the requirements at some point today. Even if you are approved account creation can take a few weeks just so you are aware. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 18:39, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
OK. Forgot to mention I e-mailed Nikki about this book and she told me to go through WP:OUP.Zigzig20s (talk) 18:45, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
Zigzig20s on a side note in response to "wikilinked to asap" remember there is no deadline for wikipedia. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 06:12, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
I know. But since we talked, I've had to move one article to my userspace after another editor started deleting referenced content without following any specific WP policy. I think adding more content from the OUP Handbook will help, as it will balance it out, and I'll then be able to move it back to mainspace. There are a couple of editors busy removing good content arbitrarily/when they don't like it these days--not sure why.Zigzig20s (talk) 06:16, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
@Zigzig20s: I'm aware of your disagreement with the other editor, and while I won't take a side in the issue. I would however suggest you refer to The manual of style and perhaps sit down with a nice cup of tea. Take the advice or leave it, it doesn't effect your access to OUP one bit. I however do hope you intend to use these resources for more than one article, otherwise its a waste of a limited resource available to editors. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 06:27, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
I will. And yes I know that article is not perfect, but Wikipedia is a work in progress. Removing referenced content is counterproductive; it just makes things worse. Some editors are very discouraging.Zigzig20s (talk) 06:29, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

Quick closure at ANI

Hi, Cameron. I wrote up an explanatory note about my block of OD Paradox for ANI, but was edit conflicted by your close when I went to post. Non-admin closures are helpful, I wouldn't want to be without them, but you might consider giving the blocking admin a few minutes more to comment before closing. With thanks for all your good work. New Page Review needs your help

Hi Cameron11598,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Cameron11598. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter

Hello Cameron11598,
Breaking the back of the backlog
We now have 811 New Page Reviewers! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog. Now it's time for action.
Mid July to 01 Oct 2016

If each reviewer does only 10 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
Let's get that over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Second set of eyes

Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work. Read about it at the new Monitoring the system section in the tutorial.

Getting the tools we need - 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey: Please vote

With some tweaks to their look, and some additional features, Page Curation and New Pages Feed could easily be the best tools for patrollers and reviewers. We've listed most of what what we need at the 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey. Voting starts on 28 November - please turn out to make our bid the Foundation's top priority. Please help also by improving or commenting on our Wishlist entry at the Community Wishlist Survey. Many other important user suggestions are listed at at Page Curation.

OUP renewal?

Hi,

I got OUP access back in November 2015, and now I'm getting warning emails that my Oxford Quick Reference access is about to expire (but none of the other OUP services as yet). Is there a description anywhere of how to apply for renewal? --Xover (talk) 12:52, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

This is pretty outrageous. Please read my comment at the bottom. What do you think? Quis separabit? 07:21, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, of course. I just mean it is bizarre that an IP (from Singapore, I have it from a reliable source) with this skimpy (apparently) an edit history would leave a message like "Hi - I would like to second your stand on Rms125a@hotmail.com This person has resurfaced on 11 December 2016 and has been vandalizing wiki pages. This person is still signing in from Rms125a@hotmail.com . How can we stop him??" -- I mean, after how many years?? WTF??
Notice the varying degrees of English proficiency from edit summary to full blown assault? Don't bother yourself about it -- I am just explaining why I think something is weird about it. Anyway, bye for now. Very late in NYC (don't know where you are, so...) Good luck on your exams. Yours, Quis separabit? 07:48, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

Caribbean?

I understand you are the coordinator of the Oxford University Press access for the WP Library. I am specifically interested in the Dictionary of Caribbean and Afro–Latin American Biography, because this region is sorely lacking in the encyclopedia, but in addition, scarce on-line documentation for most of the Caribbean is available. If I were to apply to obtain access to Wikipedia:OUP, would I gain access to this specific journal? I live in Mexico and there is no access to English-language libraries in my city, no such thing as library membership, nor any means of ordering in volumes via inter-library coordination projects. Thank you for your assistance with my question. Please ping me, as I do not always receive notifications from WP on the watch-list notifications. SusunW (talk) 19:51, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello SusunW for a list of OUP databases that we offer access to through the The wikipedia Library please see; this page for journals, and this page for scholarships. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 20:00, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
Thank you so much for these lists. I do not see the dictionary of my specific interest on the journals link, but in the scholarship section under Oxford Reference Online, I find the volumes! Really appreciate your help. I do lots of biographies about women and minorities and we just finished a month-long editathon on the Caribbean. Would that I had known of this volume before that. But thankfully, I do now. SusunW (talk) 20:16, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
@SusunW: Just a heads up WP:OUP does take quite a bit of time to process for some reason it usually takes a couple of weeks if not longer. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 00:49, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm not going anywhere :) I am really grateful that WP offers library services like this, as it is the only way that I can have access to scholarly works that I am aware of. I tried to get a library membership in the US, where I have family members, but they require that I visit there "in person" at least once per year, which is not logistically feasible. Before Mexico, we were in Belize and there were no libraries at all. Here, they have them, but I can only use materials on site and they are all in Spanish. Again, I am really appreciative of your help. SusunW (talk) 00:57, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello Cameron11598,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 811 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

New Newspapers.com account?

Do I need to start a new Newspapers.com account when I subscribe via the partnership, or can I use an existing account? Lizard (talk) 01:30, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

@Lizard the Wizard:I think one you've used so long as it hasn't had a paid membership beforehand is okay. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 05:14, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
Alright... How do I do it that way? Ha, the link in the email following "you will need to be freely registered at Newspapers.com through a special partnership registration link:" sends me to a dead end when I'm logged in and the sign-up page when I'm logged out. Lizard (talk) 05:26, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
Actually you'll probably need a new account then. Sorry I was thinking of a different database. But it will need to be linked to your e-mail listen on the google dock @Lizard the Wizard: --Cameron11598 (Talk) 05:28, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
I went and tried anyway. Seems silly that I would have to use an email other than the one I use for Wikipedia (which is the one my current Newspapers.com account uses), if it's a partnership through Wikipedia. Lizard (talk) 19:53, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I got my passwords for OUP today and have finished my GA candidate and written another biography on an important Caribbean woman. I cannot thank you enough for your help in coordinating this project. For the Caribbean, sourcing is so hard to find and this source is invaluable. SusunW (talk) 01:24, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Christine Daaé

Madame Giry acts as a adopted mother to Christine in the 2004 film. In the original novel, where most information is taken for the article. Her adopted mother's name is Valerius. Gustave Daaé is the name in the 2004 film as well. The father has no name in the original novel. Which is why I made the changes I did. I have been studying this novel for over 20 years. That's why I felt the need to edit it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:CCC5:B940:F902:D747:E6A1:6782 (talk) 07:36, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

Regardless, @2602:306:CCC5:B940:F902:D747:E6A1:6782: changing her father's name to "Daddy" is not appropriate, nor encyclopedic, thus the revert of your change and the warning. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 16:55, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

GraphHopper revert?

Why did you do the revert for the GraphHopper page? I just made it more precise. The 'developer' of the software is now not only one person and is driven by the mentioned company. Peatar (talk) 20:52, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

@Peatar: A couple of reasons 1) the change was backed up with a reliable source, 2)Generally the developer on software rarely changes so that looked a bit odd to me and provided a red flag. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 20:59, 20 February 2017 (UTC)
@Cameron: It did not change, the team just got bigger. Have a look https://www.graphhopper.com/about-us/ not sure how to include this in the change though Peatar (talk) 21:52, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.3

Hello Cameron11598,

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 811 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.
If you asked for the New Page Reviewer right, please consider investing a bit of time - every little helps preventing spam and trash entering the mainspace and Google when the 'NO_INDEX' tags expire.

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
  • European Union Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
  • Japan 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Apologies for the inconvenience Carrite. I know it can be pretty inconvenient to be locked out without access, but Cameron is doing the best he can. Page Mover

If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog (around 15,000 pages) down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.

-- There'sNoTime (to explain) 17:38, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

An update from the Sustainability Initiative

Thank you for supporting the Sustainability Initiative!

Hi, Cameron11598! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

What's new?

We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)

What's next?

Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

Please help!

Let's keep this project moving forward – and there are several ways in which you can help:

  • Ask other Wikipedians to sign the project page as well – this way we can show the Wikimedia Foundation that this is an issue that the community really cares about.
  • Talk to Wikimedians you know about the importance of reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement.
  • Improve and translate the project page on Meta.

If you have any questions, you can contact us on on Meta. Again, thank you very much for your support! --Aubrey and Gnom (talk) 08:57, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

@Gnom: on an unrelated note, your access for OUP should be up and running --Cameron11598 (Talk) 23:57, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Question

Dear Cameron I am working on new article and it needs some refrences which have been published in Times newspaper ( as an example on 26 january 1995), could you kindly let me know, is it any chance to find them through wiki ? regards --DejaVu (talk) 20:24, 10 April 2017 (UTC) It would be so helpul instead of going to local librerary and use micro-films system like flintstones :)

@DejaVu: Let me check and see, if not I'll ask one of the other Wikipedia Library coordinators. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 20:28, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
@DejaVu: I asked Samwalton9 (WMF) to look into it for me. He said he'll check into it. Hope this helps --Cameron11598 (Talk) 20:47, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Appreciate for your help. --Déjà vu (Talk) 23:06, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
@DejaVu: after conferring with Samwalton9 it looks like we don't have any databases that have access to the Times for 1958, might I suggest the resource exchange? BU Rob13 might be able to provide some light on the resource exchange as I'm not very familiar with it. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 23:55, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Dispute Resolution Noticeboard Volunteer Roll Call

This is a volunteer roll call sent to you on behalf of the current Dispute Resolution Noticeboard Coordinator, Robert McClenon, and is being sent to you because you have listed yourself as a volunteer at DRN. If you remain interested in helping at DRN and are willing to actively do so by taking at least one case (and seeing it through) or helping with administrative matters at least once per calendar month, please add your name to the roll call list. Those who do not add their name on the roll call list will be removed from the principal volunteer list after May 31, 2017 unless the DRN Coordinator chooses to retain their name for the best interest of DRN or the encyclopedia. Individuals whose names are removed after May 31, 2017, should feel free to re-add their names to the principal volunteer list, but are respectfully requested not to do so unless they are willing to take part at DRN at least one time per month as noted above. No one is going to be monitoring to see if you live up to that commitment, but we respectfully ask that you either live up to it or remove your name from the principal volunteer list.

Questions about Community Based De-adminship

Can you explain to me why you think it is vague? I'm just trying to understand so that I can make the best proposal possible. (Yes, I know this is a perennial topic, but as far as I am aware the proposed procedure has never been proposed before.) -Obsidi (talk) 00:58, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

@Obsidi: Just a few things off the top of my head, how long does this proposal for desysop need to stay open on AN, how many users need to take part in the discussion, RFA usually has 100+ users, however AN threads attract about ~10 or so editors, this isn't a good population size to establish a relative percentage of those in the community. Only a fairly regular crowd looks at AN or ANI and unfortunately you lack a diversity in those opining at those particular notice boards. Hope this makes sense. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 01:10, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
  • Japan 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
  • South Australia Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
  • Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

So, on to the third round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Newspapers.com still asking for Publishers Extra edition

Hi, Cameron. Thank you for processing my application. Do you know if there is a lag before the newspapers.com account change becomes effective? I still get buy-a-subscription notices on almost all click-throughs. Dovid (talk) 03:25, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

Dovid There might be, usually I don't happen to have same day turn around form being told your account is ready. Try giving it 24 hours and let me know. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 03:29, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
Good to know, and seems to be working now. Might want to note that in your "Done" messages on the project page, so silly impatient people like me don't bother you :) Thanks for your hard work, much appreciated. Dovid (talk) 14:41, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello Cameron11598,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 811 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.

Newspapers.com Account Renewal Inquiry

My request for account renewal with Newspapers.com is fairly recent, but it looks like other, earlier requests have gone unanswered for a few weeks now. Is there an issue on the Newspapers.com end vis a vis the Wikipedia program? I'm just curious since I'm actively working on a few pages, and now lacking access am finding it harder to complete some of the work. Cheers, Finktron (talk) 13:11, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Came here to post exactly this. Was looking to learn more as to the status of this program as there currently looks to be a 2.5 week backup to date. Want to ensure nothing has changed as this program, of the three I've utilized (HighBeam and Newspaperarchive.com the others), is by far the most useful and beneficial. GauchoDude (talk) 16:09, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Publisher Extras - Newspapers.com

Can anyone (not necessarily me) "break into" the Nevada State Journal? I'm virtually certain that this is Norman Dike's divorce from his first wife. "Virtually certain" ain't good enough, of course and I can't find the item anywhere else.--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 20:18, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

@Gaarmyvet: The New York Public Library has it. I'll be in New York a few times this summer and will try to access it then. Please post all the information in a request at WP:RX so I can keep track of it/remember to do this. ~ Rob13Talk 03:52, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

I'd like to do some publicity around this and make it visible on the TWL pages. Have you had any notification about this? Thanks in advance MartinPoulter (talk) 08:37, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

@MartinPoulter and Cameron11598: Oh! That's great! I've not heard anything about this. Martin, could you drop me an email with any further information you have + the email of your OUP contact? Just need to figure out the details (e.g. does everyone with one of the OUP accounts have access to this, or is it a separate resource to be applied for?) and we can add it to the next round of announcements and make sure that the OUP TWL pages are up to date :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 09:13, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.

German Articles to Review for Notability

Hi Cameron! Hope you're well!

About a week ago we discussed about you looking into an article that I had written for new submission into Wikipedia. Prior reviewers had rejected it due to lack of notability, but those reviewers didn't speak German, and most of the secondary sources about the subject were in German. Because you speak German, you had said you'd be willing to look at the news items and determine whether they adhere to Wikipedia's rules regarding notability. The article in question is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Vision_Hope_International

I was also confused about notability because of other articles in Wikipedia that seemed to run afoul of notability standards. These are:

1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CBM_(charity) << No independent references

2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kindernothilfe << No independent media sources (i.e., no secondary sources)

3. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PartnerAid << Only references the NGO's 2011 Annual Report (i.e., no secondary sources, no unbiased sources)

Have you had a chance to look at any of these?

Thanks!

  • The new page backlog is currently at 16,991 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.

Technology update:

  • Rentier has created a NPP browser in WMF Labs that allows you to search new unreviewed pages using keywords and categories.

General project update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community Tech team is working with the community to implement the autoconfirmed article creation trial. The trial is currently set to start on 7 September 2017, pending final approval of the technical features.
  • Please remember to focus on the quality of review: correct tagging of articles and not tagbombing are important. Searching for potential copyright violations is also important, and it can be aided by Earwig's Copyvio Detector, which can be added to your toolbar for ease of use with this user script.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

WikiCup 2017 September newsletter

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round. Meanwhile Yellow Evan, a typhoon specialist, was contributing 12 DYKs and 10 GAs, while Adityavagarwal and Freikorp topped the GAR list with 8 reviews each. As we enter the final round, we are down to eight contestants, and we would like to thank those of you who have been eliminated for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. The lowest score needed to reach round 5 was 305, and I think we can expect a highly competitive final round.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck, and let the best man (or woman) win! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. • Currently there are 532 pages in the backlog that were created by non-autoconfirmed users before WP:ACTRIAL. The NPP project is undertaking a drive to clear these pages from the backlog before they hit the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing a few today!

Technology update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on creating a new filter for page curation that will allow new page patrollers to filter by extended confirmed status. For more information see: T175225

General project update:

  • On 14 September 2017 the English Wikipedia began the autoconfirmed article creation trial. For a six month period, creation of articles in the mainspace of the English Wikipedia will be restricted to users with autoconfirmed status. New users who attempt article creation will now be redirected to a newly designed landing page.
  • Before clicking on a reference or external link while reviewing a page, please be careful that the site looks trustworthy. If you have a question about the safety of clicking on a link, it is better not to click on it.

Newspapers.com access granted without notice

Hi, I filled out the Google Form requesting access to a full Newspapers.com subscription June 28 or so, and since then received no further communication about it. I logged in today to see that I had been upgraded to the "Newspapers Basic" plan without my knowledge. I'm thrilled, however is there a way to communicate to editors when their request has been processed? I realize your hands may be tied regarding anything that happens from Newspapers.com corporate, but could you advise editors to check their newspapers.com account page regularly because they might not get a notification once their request is confirmed? Mark Schierbecker (talk) 20:02, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

If my request was granted should my account be on the "Basic" or "Publisher Extra" plan? Currently on Basic. Mark Schierbecker (talk) 20:08, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
@Mark Schierbecker: Your account should have been marked  Done on the page when it was finished on the application page (this may have lapsed due to the transition to the Library Card Platform). Publisher's extra wasn't offered until the beginning of August. If you would like I can have your account upgraded. My apologies that you weren't made aware sooner.--Cameron11598 (Talk) 23:16, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Trouted

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

You have been trouted for: YOUR REASON HERE 199.171.8.37 (talk) 17:21, 5 October 2017 (UTC) Noted the comments RE: revision to Tulsa Race Riot correction. Renaming a pertinent historical event in an attempt to 'negate or otherwise whitewash history' is definite;y not constructive.199.171.8.37 (talk) 17:21, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Responded on your talk page, but in summary; my bad, however please include a source next time as it looks kinda janky/sketchy when you are changing an article title like that, generally those kind of changes should be discussed on the talk page imo. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 17:29, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018

So the 2017 WikiCup has come to an end. Congratulations to the winner, to the other finalists and to all those who took part. 177 contestants signed up, more than usual, but not all of them submitted entries in the first round. Were editors attracted by the cash prizes offered for the first time this year, or were these irrelevant? Do the rules and scoring need changing for the 2018 WikiCup? If you have a view on these or other matters, why not join in the WikiCup discussion about next year's contest? IndiaIsTheBest (talk) 17:57, 27 November 2017 (UTC) What? Are you serious for real?

Where does the resource linked to Bharwads claiming Nandvanshi, even mention the word "Nandvanshi"??? Not even a single word in both sources!!! and you telling me to go on talk page? You should go on talk page to promote this Bharwad caste. Literally resend me a link where Nandvanshi is mentioned for bharwads on Nandvanshi page.

@IndiaIsTheBest: Hello! You appear to be looking at a preview of the book which does not contain every page. Could it be possible that the page where this is mentioned is not in the preview you are using? However the book does meet the requirements for a Reliable Source, and you do appear to be edit warring, as such I would suggest taking the issue to the article talk page. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 18:01, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
