Why are you editing all the changes around the flag of Red Star Belgrade? — Preceding unsigned comment added by VucoCar (talkcontribs) 20:47, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

I could ask you the same thing. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:56, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

I am from Serbia and former Yugoslavia and i know that Red Star and Partizan are from Serbia. Yugoslavia consisted of 6 republics where the capital was Belgrade in Serbia and the Republic of Serbia in the federation. Here is the table of the League of Champions of the Red Star and Partizan with Serbian flag. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_Federal_Republic_of_Yugoslavia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League

The flag should reflect the nation of the time for the sake of historical accuracy. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:10, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

Then we must restore this too. On this page and others still stand Red Star Belgrade and Partizan with Serbian flag and not Yugoslavia flag. See this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Champions_League — Preceding unsigned comment added by VucoCar (talkcontribs) 21:29, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

You all make mistakes and on many places mix the flags. In one place in history for Partizan and Red Star are flag of former Yugoslavia and on other places is flag of Serbia in Champions League, Uefa cup and etc. Can't put difrent flags on same clubs. Looking ugly and inccorect.

I assume the flags at UEFA Champions League#Winners reflect the current nations. The table directly below gives the nations at the time of victory. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:30, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

Close of Ben George

User:GeniusDP went and closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ben George but I reverted it because this user was created on only the 8th September. But what got me is how a new user would know how even to close an AfD which makes me think that it's a veteran user who created another account, i.e because of a block evasion or something else... Because you're an admin thought I'd just pass this onto you first. Govvy (talk) 07:20, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

CC:@Bbb23: Govvy (talk) 13:25, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
Good catch, Govvy, the account is a sock and now blocked. Your revert of the AfD closure would have been proper even if the account weren't a sock. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:41, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
@Bbb23: Cheers, thought smelt fishy! Govvy (talk) 13:50, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

Did you see my note on his talk page? soccerway has a count of 34 Brazil caps for what I can read. Govvy (talk) 19:01, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

Is National Football Teams more accurate? Is it missing any games? Govvy (talk) 19:08, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

You're right, and that's what NFT record in their "Games" tab: I was going by the "County-statistics" tab, which erroneously states 35 caps; they've added a seemingly imaginary appearance in the 2013 totals. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:10, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
LOL, cheers, that really bugged me out yesterday, I really couldn't work out what was going on. heh. cheers. Govvy (talk) 19:18, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

Reverts

Caught up in the mass revert of an editor, sorry if they were OK. GiantSnowman 08:07, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

Requesting your intervention in FC Goa article.

Hi. I would urge you to intervene in the following matter.

As per the guidelines of Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Clubs, the notable players section if present must have a criteria. Although it is a guideline, I dont find any reason to avoid it. As of this revision of the FC Goa page, there was a maintainence template added to the Notable Former Players section, I put a criteria (this revision) and edited the players's list. But strangely, an user User:Joel David 99 has been constantly reverting the edit without citing any reason. In the revision, the user even wrote Catalonia and Czechoslovakia to be present countries. Even though I reached to the editor twice in the talk page (here and here, the editor did not reply to me and simply deleted the messages. Before this matter turns into a serious edit war, I would request you to intervene, being an admin. Thanks. RRD (talk) 06:47, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) It was me that added the template originally. I have reverted and left another message (note that previous messages to this user have been removed).[1][2] Nzd (talk) 09:31, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
I've got to a final warning on this as the disruption is now across Chennaiyin FC, FC Pune City, ATK (football club) and Mumbai City FC. Also note that new accout User:Phantom Lancer001 (which removed the section on the ATK page only for User:Joel David 99 to readd it without the criteria, and has a very similar userpage), is a probable sock or meatpuppet. Nzd (talk) 14:30, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
These all seem to be unsourced, in any case. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:24, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Citation

Hello, you’ve notified me for making minor changes to footballers without providing a citation. I have recently done so for the page of footballer Vlad Dragomir but I cannot figure out how to insert a citation. I read the whole citation page & know how to cite & have been on Wikipedia for over ten years. If there is a way you can help me, I’d greatly appreciate it. Perhaps if you add the citation for Vlad Dragomir that I will provide to you I can see how it is done.

Vlad Dragomir made his second appearance, along with his first goal for Perugia. Here is the citation: Dragomir, V. (2018). Vlad Dragomir - Performance data 18/19. [online] Transfermarkt.co.uk. Available at: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/vlad-dragomir/leistungsdaten/spieler/319213 [Accessed 22 Sep. 2018].

Thank you FutureLitigator (talk) 16:15, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Please note that Transfermarkt is user-generated and is therefore not considered a reliable source. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:18, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Lucas Moura, Hulk and Luiz Gustavo

I understand that the three players haven't oficially retired from the national team, but they haven't been called up recently enough times to be considered part of the team.

Lucas Moura hasn't been called up in the last two years, same for Luiz Gustavo and Hulk. And due to age, it's fair to say the latter two won't play another game for the Brazilian team. I believe it's not accurate to label them as players for the Brazil national team.Horcoff (talk) 18:29, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

I think the reason why they added these players is due to the fact they were all added on the World Cup roster for FIFA 18. Hulk wasn’t even on the game prior to the dlc coming out due to his transferring to the Chinese league. Anyways, I understand why you said this to the user. There are hundreds of players on a national team but if they are not called up they are not part of the active roster & shouldn’t be added if they haven’t played recently. I was just providing you with an idea as to why they did add them, or at least that’s why I think they did. There’s only about 35 players on the games roster. The ten players extra weren’t added to the 25 squad lineup but were considered as an option. FutureLitigator (talk) 16:20, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Citation

Hello, you’ve notified me for making minor changes to footballers without providing a citation. As you can see I clearly provided citations which included information on Hazard's 2nd place finishes in PFA player of the year voting in 2013-14 and 2016-17. The reason that was added is because that info is nowhere to be seen in any other place on his wiki page. Why will you remove it in the first place? Anyway, I reverted it back. I hope there are no issues. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Exxcalibur808 (talkcontribs) 20:56, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

I reverted this edit, in which you restored unsourced content about a tattoo. Nothing to do with the PFA award. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:58, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi, mattythewhite

I urge you to check the actual number of appearance for several football players such as Niki Mäenpää and Adam Webster.

This would be greatly appreciated Jack5222 (talk) 22:48, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

I've already explained why you're being reverted on your talk page. The issue is that you're not updating the timestamp in the infobox. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:50, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

Can you please help out in this article? See this version (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Roberto_Bonano&diff=862685256&oldid=861743001), where the IP - very active in this page as well as Pablo Cavallero - accuses me of removing referenced info when I did not do any of that (have been filling page with sources the last weeks, to be more precise), removing TWO sources while at it and adding NONE!! Also, the current club where Mr. Bonano works is Athletic Bilbao, they keep changing it to Athletic Club; the best part for last: they keep writing about the goalkeeping situation at the Argentina NT concerning Bonano, Cavallero and Germán Burgos, adding no source whatsoever. I add a ref, and one of the stuff they remove is precisely that...the nerve of some people!

If you can't/won't protect the page, at least watchlist it (as will I). Attentively, thanks in advance for whatever can be provided. --Quite A Character (talk) 14:09, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

I've watchlisted the article and warned the IP for removing references. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:56, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

Reverting uncited information

Hello,

Not my edit, but my best friend is a big Albion fan so I thought I'd look up some details on Lewis Dunk. I noticed, after digging to check a claim I was going to make, that you reverted an edit by an IP for not citing a source. Now, I, as someone with many years involvement with Wikipedia and the WMF, know the value of sources.

I'm sure you've seen that a good chunk of IP users don't generally respond to talk page messages, so I'm wondering why you removed some pretty accurate up to date information, instead of either tagging it with Wikipedia's infamous {{citation needed}}, or doing a quick Google and adding the source yourself? If it was someone that had spent the time to sign up for an account, I'd understand trying to help them become more useful Wikipedian, but the standard Twinkle templates aren't that good at encouraging IPs to get involved. --Lewis Cawte (Talk) 14:48, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

Per WP:BURDEN, the "burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds or restores material". Mattythewhite (talk) 20:00, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello again,

what's your intake on this, if you please (just the last few edits, the back-and-forth between me and the other account)? Getting a bit tired and, regardless of being wrong or right, at least I offer summaries, or STARTED adding.

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 12:12, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

The nationality is generally excluded in cases like this where it is ambiguous. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:10, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

I already knew that, of course. But since the other did not (or chose not to) i was trying to humour them; that said, i agree with your approach 100%. --Quite A Character (talk) 18:07, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Still reverting me regardless of what i do. Take a look at Adrien Rabiot: this player is so NOT CURRENTLY with the French national team (all one has to do is read storyline), but they say he is, period! Dangerous close to breaking 3RR. --Quite A Character (talk) 19:21, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Blocked for block evasion. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:47, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

And what is your intake on the Rabiot intro? I know for sure (per edit history) you saw my reversion once (if not twice) and allowed it to stay. Certes, player has never announced his retirement in (for example) a press conference, but he sure "retired himself" with the actions described in source #24 no (with 99,9999999999999% of certainty, he'll never play for country again as long as Deschamps is in charge)? I mention this because AH999 reverted me again, just a note.

Continue the good work --Quite A Character (talk) 20:09, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

I've undone their last revert. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:23, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Look at his DOB he was Born in 2000 so it is pretty clear he is the first player born this Century to play for England. As as for England's youngest Debut I quoted the Sun. I put some useful information on about the player. This is a community Wiki not your own Dorset boy (talk) 21:31, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

I would of disagreed with you. I have just looked that up. I assumed that the Century began on 1st January 2000. Dorset boy (talk) 22:03, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

What's your intake on this, if you please?

With a name like this, and his descent, he's clearly eligible for the SPANISH FOOTBALLERS category is he not? The other user keeps removing it (as well as other categories related to Spain), while presenting no sources to Mr. Pardo "being" Belgian (i assume he can be considered that, as he played youth football for Anderlecht; thus, in my book both are valid).

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 23:45, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

I wouldn't have thought so. I would only include a player in a nationality category if they were either born in that country or had represented them at international level. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:53, 14 October 2018 (UTC)
So, according to your reasoning, he should only have CYPRIOT FOOTBALLERS? --Quite A Character (talk) 09:35, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
It appears he was born and raised in Belgium, so I would include Belgian footballers too. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:13, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

Can you please protect article or add it your watchlist (it's in mine for a longtime)? IP, which i am certain is banned sock User:HankMoodyTZ and others, has returned screwing up the display of refs. Also, LOL of all LOLs, they replaced several ENGLISH refs with sources in BOSNIAN, kind of a no-no (note: i clicked on several of the English ones to see if it might the case they were already dead, they are not!)

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 17:01, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Please don't take action (should you see it fit, of course) in the next hour, i'm cleaning up the article to see what can be salvaged from their actions. Oh, without explanation, the EARLY LIFE section was removed entirely! --Quite A Character (talk) 17:11, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

WORLDFOOTBALL.NET, highly used by us to source stats in the charts below, also removed just because! --Quite A Character (talk) 17:20, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Think nothing of one of the accusations, EARLY LIFE was not removed but relocated. WORLDFOOTBALL was "iced", however. --Quite A Character (talk) 17:29, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

Done! In respect for other user, salvaged as many sources as i could, now hopefully would like some respect back ;) --Quite A Character (talk) 17:56, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

TPS: thought we could use his official Spurs profile to source height, but alas they don't even display it there (odd). On a related note, I have seen errors here and there from BDFUTBOL regarding Spanish footballers in the "metrical department". Goes to show that reliable is relative, so to speak... --Quite A Character (talk) 12:08, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I've changed the ref to the FIFA WC2018 squad lists, which should be more reliable for height than random stats databases. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:24, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

You'd think the FIFA squad list would be more reliable but it caused a bit of a stir with some interesting measurements. Shouldn't matter though as it gives the same figure as the previous source (along with pretty much every other site that lists Trippier's height, barring Transfermarkt, of course). Mattythewhite (talk) 14:09, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
Ah, OK, wasn't aware of that. Or might have been but had forgotten. Sky Sports Yearbook listed him at 5ft 10 when he was 19, and presumably they get their info from the clubs, so unless he's shrunk in the wash... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:15, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

October 2018

Stop being overzealous, you know what I'm adding is not false. There are only two citations in that entire section yet you're not removing everything else, though I'm not trying to tempt you. Cf. WP:IGNORE. VEOonefive 15:16, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

WP:IGNORE doesn't give you permission to do as you please. I would recommend you take a look at WP:V. Per this policy, "Even if you're sure something is true, it must be verifiable before you can add it" (my bold). Mattythewhite (talk) 15:45, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello there,

my reasoning (i know, should have hit "undo" instead of "rollback" and written a summary, but that's in the past and i can't change it) was that it's only a LOAN. If Newcastle buys the player at the end of the season, then we would add the sub-section back (sections called WEST BROWMICH ALBION, followed by NEWCASTLE UNITED and RETURN TO WEST BROM(WICH) will sure look darn ugly in my humble opinion; the fact of we writing about his Newcastle spell in a section called WEST BROMWICH is not one bit wrong, as he is a WBA player under contract). Whatever, it stays your way.

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 18:43, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

My primary reason for reverting was to restore the content about his debut and first goal. But I do feel the section heading is appropriate, given the size of the West Brom section. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:46, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

A thousand pardons to the other user, yourself and WP! I did not notice i had removed (sourced) storyline, only now after your reply. I was only focusing on the sub-section header. --Quite A Character (talk) 18:50, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

International table

Hi. It doesn't really matter to me, but I've seen it done to indicate if the player was called up, but didn't get any playing time. Simone Zaza, Roberto Baggio, Mario Balotelli, it would be "—" to indicate they were never called up during the years in between playing time, no playing time, and playing time again. Where there are "0" like Mattia Perin it indicates they were called up but didn't get any playing time. (I should've put 0 for Giovinco). I think it might be info that would be useful between if you were called up and never played or if you were not called up at all, but probably not very intuitive unless some notes were added. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 21:25, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

None of the sources commonly used for international stats, such as NFT, EU Football or Soccerway record call ups, only appearances, so it would be unsourced. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:50, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

I got the information from Carl Hoddle's Wiki page and that wasn't sourced, I suggest you delete that as well. I seem to remember you did the same with Danny Philliskirk when I updated his Senior Career details by adding his new club AFC Fylde, this is still missing from his page today, he actually scored again for them yesterday. If you're not happy them block me, I'm sure I won't lose any sleep. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smithy53 (talkcontribs) 14:56, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

ATK Issue

Why are you reverting all edits? I'm added the list of all notable player list and also they are represented their highest level for there respective country Joel David 99 (talk) 06:03, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

I'm not reverting *all* edits, I'm reverting the edits where you added content that a) is unsourced and b) contains subjective criteria. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:03, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Parameters

Because it's a long parameter and throws the formatting of infoboxes out (resulting in unnecessary whitespace). Why don't we add a new, shorter |national-update= or similar? GiantSnowman 16:02, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Maybe that would be better, but I don't think those reasons are sufficient in going against what is currently recommended. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:12, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Érik Lamela stats table

I was just looking at the table but I am confused, wasn't there FA Cup and league cup columns or has it always been like that? Govvy (talk) 22:54, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Disruptive Editing

ok Point taken my edit to nuneaton was a joke reference to Lollujo's Youthbe series.

However i protest against the idea of disruptive as my 4 months ago run ins with you on Ben Davies the footballer Were proven to be correct I just got tied up in how the citation system worked.

Essentially you just threatened a ban for a first offence.

I hope if a genuine mistake happens in future your trigger finger doesnt itch. Axelsteel21 (talk) 04:41, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

Under my interpretation of WP:DENY, yes. If a blocked editor knows they can edit without impunity by creating stubs about notable young footballers, they'll keep coming back, causing more disruption in the long run. GiantSnowman 17:33, 7 November 2018 (UTC)

Again, yes of course? Have a look at every other players individual honours, These are honours. I’ve put sources on everything I wrote. For example. I noted him being one of the strikers in the world, and regarded as “world class” why do you keep changing it? There’s hundreds of articles suggesting this and pundits and managers and fellow professionals comments and quotes saying this. and being nominated 7th and 9th best player in the world with the ballon d’Or in 2012 and 2013 suggests this even further? What do I really have to source, it doesn’t make any sense. Are you going to put all this back? References are clearly all there. Thank you

Do you know anything about football? Clearly not Leelindsay (talk) 17:48, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

What do you gain from removing these things, when I’ve clearly put my time and effort in getting these sources you told me to get Leelindsay (talk) 17:49, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

I'm not going to engage with you if you're going to resort to snide remarks. Take it up at WT:FOOTY if saturating articles with non-notable honours means so much to you. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:51, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Look at every other football players Wikipedia page. What I’ve put are individual honours, there is no snide remarks. I stand for truth and I don’t know what you gain from it Leelindsay (talk) 17:57, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Daniel Kearns

I hope you're happy with the stats table in the Daniel Kearns article. There was no need to revert. The difference between the first table I did and the second table I did was so little. Making the changes was done with very little effort. Kingjeff (talk) 19:42, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Can't say I am, I'm in the process of updating it right now. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:44, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

What is wrong with it? Kingjeff (talk) 20:16, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

The barely readable tiny text, the style of referencing with them being bunched at the bottom, the removal of the table caption. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:18, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
I absolutely hate seeing references right next to the season article link. What specifically is wrong with the table caption? Kingjeff (talk) 20:25, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
That may be your personal preference, but it makes it a lot easier for readers know which references cite what content. We place references in close proximity to text in the prose, so why not in a table? Indeed, what is wrong with the table caption? Why need it be removed? Mattythewhite (talk) 20:29, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
When I put references line-by-line, like it was, I tend to put it in it's own column at the end of the row.Kingjeff (talk) 20:32, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
I usually copy and paste the career table from here.Kingjeff (talk) 20:35, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
I go by WP:FOOTY/Players#Career statistics, which is decided by consensus at WT:FOOTY. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:44, 16 November 2018 (UTC)
There is no difference between the two except for players have exclusively played in Major League Soccer. The only difference between my page and WP:FOOTY/Players#Career statistics is that my page is ready for copy and paste and it has a reference column at the end of each row. As far as table format when editing, I don't see the need to do things over 3 lines. This is especially true for past seasons. I can live with current seasons being done over 3 lines. WP:COMPETENCE, WP:LANGUAGEBARRIER, WP:IJUSTWANTTOPUSHSOMEBUTTONS, who knows (this user right here, whom you continue to fairly warn https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Juanmartinlavagna#October_2018), fact is they're still at "it". In Lisandro López, second time they write stats for ALL competitions in the infobox (that or vandalism, but i'll AGF here), i have reverted/re-updated accordingly.

Reverted

Hi, Matty. I see you reverted my rollback here. You may be perfectly right; I don't really have any opinion about it; my edit was part of a mass rollback of that particular IP recommended by several admins on ANI.[5] Perhaps the IP made one good edit, after all. (Though I see that their edit reverted yours. Did you change your mind?) Oh.. and I see you've reverted yourself now. Never mind, forget it! Bishonen | talk 21:23, 23 November 2018 (UTC).

Before i step in any further, is this really all necessary (see the Spurs' 2016/17 season)? That much overdetail? OF COURSE, a second place is important as hell for any team, but should the bulk of it not be in the CLUB's page? Heck (just checking it now), the bit in Tottenham's page consists of TWO lines, compared to the EIGHT here (also, comprehensive detail of runs of teams - Chelsea - coached by another person/WP subject i believe)! Judging from the person who edited's list of contributions (afternoons of 20 and 21 August), football does not seem to be their main editorial focus, so maybe they could be missing something (not meaning no disrespect, of course, maybe it is I that am missing something, but i still think this is a case of overdetail, at least in the manager's article)?

For now, i've only composed the wording and the display of the sources, but would really like your intake on this if possible. Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 04:16, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

It probably is a bit much, especially considering there's next to nothing for the next two and a half years. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:36, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Gordon Morritt

Hello. Trouble is, no source that I've seen, including the YCFC one sat after the date in the article, confirms the 20th as the date of death. And Northampton Town FC's report of his death is dated the 19th, which if accurate does rather rule out the 20th... If you're aware of anything that does verify a specific date, please add it, otherwise it might be an idea to remove the day and add words citing one of the sources that says "died this week", e.g. https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/rotherham-united/farewell-to-versatile-former-rotherham-united-and-doncaster-rovers-player-1-9453328 . I think i was in the right to apply rollback here, no? I bet my right hand this was User:Harry J Beeney, blocked for reasons detailed in their talkpage. Main interest in editing, again, Brighton & HA-related content.

Sorry for any inconvenience if not, attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 12:56, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Possibly, as you were reverting a likely sock puppet, although most of his edit seemed fine, apart from the malformed timestamp. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:32, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Indeed. User:Struway2 has already taken care of that (i was about to undo one of my edits, the one in the chart below, but he duly beat me to it), and i acknowledged that in his talkpage. --Quite A Character (talk) 17:48, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Seeing as I was mentioned... Not convinced he is socking, personally: he's not blocked, judging by the userpage he's hardly making a secret of who he is, and the previous account hasn't edited since the new one started. Might have just lost his password and made himself a new account. I did just that many years ago. And heaven only knows why Cluebot picked this up as likely vandalism. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:10, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
You're right, I wrongly thought the previous account must have been blocked. I've already asked him why he's created a new account. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:16, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Sock

See this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/109.153.226.234), duly blocked by you? New IP found at Jesús Navas, this is beyond ridiculous (the piping of some clubs and others not, and if you humour them they'll still revert you)!!

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 21:53, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

  • Well? I have already reverted, now await to be re-reverted... --Quite A Character (talk) 17:23, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
    • I've blocked them for block evasion, although I can't say I disagree with this particular edit. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:39, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

And the lack of coherence (some clubs piped, others not), and the utter nuisance overall (i cannot stress the Cristhian Stuani situation enough, when i was actually meeting their editorial expectations and piping ALL clubs, and still got reverted!)? In the meantime, i see they reverted me again, and you also blocked that address. --Quite A Character (talk) 19:02, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

OK, they win again, i went in and piped all clubs (probably, will still be reverted). I think it's just a matter of aesthetics and no gross editorial violation to leave clubs unpiped in storyline, and i happen to like them better that way (compressing in box and intro). But you do agree with me that coherence should be the name of the game, no?

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 19:08, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

Coherence, in what regard? Mattythewhite (talk) 19:10, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

The piping of clubs (some piped, others left in full). Speaking of Mr. Navas' article, i have finished the cleanup. --Quite A Character (talk) 19:37, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

I agree that club names should usually be piped. But that seems to go against your reverts at Navas, in which you restored the full club name to Sevilla? Mattythewhite (talk) 19:46, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

WOW, this is getting to be a rather unproductive exchange (meaning no disrespect, it's just i feel you are not understanding my reasonings and thus we are running around in circles)... I restored the version where ALL the club names were unpiped (not only Sevilla), to be coherent and because this utter nuisance (the sock) is really getting on my nerves. Immediately after that, i piped them ALL (not only Sevilla) and thus humoured both the sock and all the users (yourself included) that like clubs to be piped in storyline.

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 20:01, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

So I take it that what you would advocate is leaving *all* club names unpiped? So club names presented like FC Barcelona, Manchester United F.C. etc, in all instances? Mattythewhite (talk) 20:19, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

I think i had a discussion with a fellow user years ago, and there i think i heard it would be best to pipe all English clubs, and nothing was said of non-English clubs, so i deduced it was a matter of personal preference to pipe/unpipe clubs from other nations. To this day, i continue to see HUNDREDS (if not THOUSANDS) of articles with clubs written in full in storyline/intro (and this includes foreign players with solid careers in England), and not a problem stemming from that; i do acknowledge (again), that most experienced users in the footy community think all clubs should be piped, but i have seen a few (not only me, i assure you that) that do not mind otherwise, at all.

Which leads to this other question i pose you: would you consider this a minor thing, editorial-wise (the presentation of clubs)? Should they be left unpiped, does it grossly violate the WP:COMMONNAME principle? --Quite A Character (talk) 21:37, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

It seems unnecessary to leave them unpiped when the context of football has been established. WP:COMMONNAME applies to article titles, so isn't relevant. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:45, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

League honours

Hi Matty, do you have any 'usual sources' for league honours? I'm trying to source Shaun Newton's 1999–2000 First Division entry but haven't managed to find anything citable. It appears he did get a medal, which was offered for sale at one point. Nzd (talk) 04:28, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Funny you should ask, as I have recently started using the Rothmans/Sky Sports Yearbooks for league honours. They don't state who won medals (finding this out for most competitions is difficult), so I use the league appearances and league tables they list. I've added this for Newton's 1999/2000 First Division honour. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:25, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
Nice one, cheers for doing that. Nzd (talk) 17:51, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Matty, please,

do you know how one goes about "resurrecting" the FIFA.com related external links (they crashed down in the summer, don't know exactly when, but slowly have been being "resurrected")? Link was removed (hopefully because of that, GS "dared" me to improve the page without saying anything after his last actions, and i'm on it believe me, tomorrow will add more refs) and i reinstated it, but in its dead form.

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 06:11, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

You could try https://web.archive.org/ to see if they've been archived? Mattythewhite (talk) 15:00, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

I thanked you for you redirecting me there, but the thing is, AGAIN, i can't make heads or tails of the technicality. Do i have to ask a bot to perform the deed, or otherwise? Also, if you play "check the differences" with a revived link (please see this one as example https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/players/player/359436/) there seems to be none with Mr. Barila's one, except for the due numerical difference as each and every player/coach has their own entry.

Attentively --Quite A Character (talk) 23:39, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

You can do it manually, by using the |archiveurl= and |archivedate= parameters. I'm not sure what you mean by "check the differences", or how the Eder link is related to Barila's. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:47, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks again. What i meant is both URLs have the exact same outline except for the last digits, but when you click on Barila's it is dead, and Eder's works. --Quite A Character (talk) 23:50, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Perhaps FIFA have taken down their profiles for older players? Mattythewhite (talk) 23:53, 21 November 2018 (UTC)

Well thought of, indeed. But turns out it's a "no", kind fellow user, have a look at this chap i just found (https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/players/player/58309/ even older than Mr. Barila), URL alive and kicking... --Quite A Character (talk) 00:09, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Obviously, Mr. Sousa is not a goalkeeper! Have a look at this even older Portuguese player (https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/players/player/47354/ this one is correct, a GK indeed!), also working. What seems to catch the eye now, unfortunately, is that no individual matches (finals, qualifiers) are sourced in the players' profiles, only total appearances. We'll be hard-pressed now to use this as anything other than an external link, methinks... --Quite A Character (talk) 00:14, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Quite A Character: You can use the IABot Management Interface to create archive links for any dead references in an article (presuming they have previously been archived by one of the systems it supports). Nzd (talk) 18:02, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) An older format for the player pages was www.fifa.com/worldfootball/statisticsandrecords/players/player=...../ ; Mr Barila's profile does have an archive copy using that format. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:48, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
@Nzd:, :@Struway:, i'm afraid i'm at a loss as to what to do. Can either of you perform the task please, if you know how? Many thanks in advance, have a nice week --Quite A Character (talk) 02:43, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
Sorry @Quite A Character, I hadn't looked closely enough and see now that this is an issue with using the {{FIFA player}} template (so IABot wouldn't have worked anyway). It looks like just feeding the ID to the template will assume the new URL format, which obviously won't work if that page was never migrated over. There would need to be a way to tell the template to present an archive from the old format, I think (although I am no expert). This would need to be raised with the template editors on the talk page. Failing that, I think you'd need to forego the template and use a variation on one of these (at least for the time being):
  • Sergio Javier Barila – FIFA competition record at the Wayback Machine (archived 2012-11-04)
  • "Sergio Javier Barila". FIFA. Archived from the original on 2012-11-04.
  • Sergio BarilaFIFA competition record

Glenn Murray

Hi there,

I've added perfectly good statistics to Glenn Murray by adding his overall Brighton statistics and you keep reverting my edits, why is this?

You also taken away the fact he won the play offs in 2013 underneath the honours bit.

Please may you keep it up there.

Cheers.

Thomas Lemar

Would you take some time to tell me, what's wrong in my edit in the page "Thomas Lemar". I have added an appropriate verifiable source to the edit. Considering the context of the game, he was instrumental in helping his team reaching the next round. Such performances are worth to be noted. If I am not wrong, we have had talks earlier threatening me of getting blocked. This time I have haven't done anything wrong. Anyway as an administrator, you will have the final say on the article. Cheers!!! Ninad05mestry (talk) 13:08, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Is that notable for inclusion though? Players help their teams into the next rounds of competitions all the time, it doesn't mean it has to be recorded in a Wikipedia biography. Btw I may be an admin but that doesn't mean I have the "final say" on a content dispute. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:26, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
Well, it was a goal, not an assist or a routine performance. Anyway I hope the talk ends here, I think you must do what makes Wikipedia better. Cheers!! Ninad05mestry (talk) 04:43, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
