Thanks for reviewing the page, MurielMary, and for the edits. Linus E (talk) 17:29, 17 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MurieMary, Thank you for reviewing my article. I will add my sources, as you indicate. I accidentally submitted it last night before finishing it, and did not know how to undo that. This article is meant for the Category: University of Massachusetts faculty. I plan to write several other articles for this Category: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:University_of_Massachusetts_Amherst_faculty While working on Barbara Zecchi's article I was not sure how to link it to this category. Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thank you very much! Lunaandmaya (talk) 13:15, 2 August 2020 (UTC)Lunaandmaya[reply]

Edits made to Draft:Lisa Von Tang: acceptable?[edit]

Hi MurieMary! Thank you very much for your advice on the edits to be made to my article. I've tried to follow your advice. Could you see if I have followed your advice properly? Thank you so much! I'm new to writing for Wiki.

There's this page made in 2013 that I've been trying to model my own page after. But now I guess the Wiki rules have changed over the years, and I don't understand why that older page can be accepted, but not mine. The older page is

Hi, Shunmugam won a national award (designer of the year). There's no evidence in von Tang's article of similar national recognition. MurielMary (talk) 12:38, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Thanks for your response, MurielMary. I've put in some further evidence to show that Von Tang is an up-and-coming fashion designer. (1) She is garnering recognition gradually in reputable fashion magazines. (2) Most recently her work was featured in VOGUE, (3) she did win second place just behind China's famous Guo Pei during Singapore Fashion Week 2016, and (4) her bespoke design has made it to the Met Gala in 2016, worn by Nicole Shanahan, the Google Founder Sergey Brin's wife. Do please consider these additional information. Thank you!
IreallyreallylikewritingIreallyreallylikewriting (talk) 06:22, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
People need to have already met the notability criteria for a biography on WP for an article to be written about them. Von Tang is "up and coming" therefore not at the level of notability for inclusion in the encyclopedia yet. MurielMary (talk) 08:01, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Correction for Article for Creation[edit]

Dear MurieMary, Thank you so much for your feedback on my Draft article for Denise Ajayi-Williams. I have done the correction you pointed out. Best Wishes, (Ozonyiawiki (talk) 07:34, 2 June 2020 (UTC))[reply]

Dear MurielMary, a separate "Awards and Collections" section has been added to Draft:Sharon Butler as you suggested. More citations have been added, too, to print publications. I hope this makes a stronger case for publication. Thanks for your help. Rocco718 (talk) 17:53, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I am very new to this and appreciate your valuable guidance. Regarding Katherine Haataja, on the Hannikainen Family website she appears in the family tree drawing on the right side, last on the branch, under her second name Elina born 1969. The parents names match the information available in public records. Obviously it is an old drawing, but she is most certainly included. In my research on Finnish Wikipedia I also found more relatives of female composer Ann-Elise Hannikainen whom I would like to include in the English Wikipedia. Can you kindly advise if I can simply make a translation of it when I create it? Thank you again very much. I really value your feedback and enjoy the research. Dear MurielMary, thank you for you time and suggestions, and could you possibly have a look once again on the Draft:Yulia Kuzmenko. The entry has been significantly extended to represent Kuzmenko herself as much as possible. It is hard to separate completely Yulia’s biography from her current ordeal (arrest and incarceration) – obviously a life-changing event.

You write “an article <should be> written about the trial”. Your suggestion is worthwhile, and judicial side of her case does need an analysis and publicity. But at the moment it is scarcely possible, since 1) authorities are procrastinating the trial, and 2) prosecution is secretive with their materials.

An article in English-language Wikipedia would be a valuable reference for those who appeal for justice for this woman. LTA for Ukraine (talk) 18:39, 5 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Mr.Muriel Recently I asked for your help in an article about deletion and you actually helped me to edit the article and revise it. You are one of the few here who really help and not just review. Hi MurielMary. Thank you for facilitating the publication of the Rosalind Gersten Jacobs page. Your edits and assistance in expediting the review is very much appreciated. I'm working now to upload images to enhance the page. If I use a photograph of her by Man Ray, what do I have to do to insure that the image is accepted? Do I need permission of the Man Ray Estate?Gaw54 (talk) 20:54, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gaw54, nice to hear from you! It's good to have Rosalind's page published now! With regards to getting permission to use an image, I'm not really familiar with the ins and outs of how to deal with this situation. I suggest you ask at the Village Pump (like a helpdesk page) on the Wikimedia Commons site (that's where images are uploaded). Here's the page to post your question on: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Village_pump/Copyright

All the best! MurielMary (talk) 06:54, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MurielMay. I'm following up on my recent article with an entry on a woman whose life intersected with Rosalind Gersten Jacobs's story, Noma Copley. While she is the co-named founder of the Noma and William Copley Foundation, which is well documented, her story (unlike her then husband's story), has slipped through the cracks. So I made it my job to fix that. I would very much appreciate your taking a look at the draft Wiki entry I just submitted and facilitate its acceptance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Noma_Copley. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.Gaw54 (talk) 00:58, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A to-do addition maybe[edit]

Hello MurielMary. I see you have a comprehensive to do list so maybe you don't really need me cluttering it up. However, there's an interesting lady, Fanny Fantham, who you might be interested in adding. Fanthams Peak on Mount Taranaki was named after her. She wss the first woman to climb it, and she worked in munitions factory and as a nurse in England in WW1. There's a bit about here ----> https://www.sooty.nz/ffantham.html Regards Moriori (talk) 21:15, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Moriori thanks so much for the tip, she definitely sounds interesting!! I'll add her to my list! MurielMary (talk) 06:47, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Citation error[edit]

Hi Muriel Mary. Me again. I just tried to update the Gersten Jacobs page with the citation of an article that came out today in Women's Wear Daily. Hi again Gaw54, I just looked at the article and the added citation and it looks fine to me! What kind of error message was it? If you get it again, feel free to let me know and I might recognise it. MurielMary (talk) 07:16, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Muriel Mary. I really appreciate you approving my article today. Thanks for the friendly welcome to Wikipedia. MsHorton (talk) 19:44, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MsHorton, you're welcome! Wang is a tricky woman to write about as her career was before the internet age and it looks like there are not many online sources about her. Now that the draft is published though, there might be other editors who can access other information about her. By the way, if you are interested in creating articles about notable women, there is a group of editors called Women in Red that works on creating articles - you can find the page by searching Wikipedia for Women in Red. • Hi. I am puzzled by you evaluation of Ann E. Killebrew. I would have thought that the many reviews of her books in well-regarded academic journals would qualify her as notable.NotButtigieg (talk) 12:15, 7 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi NotButtigieg IMO the draft doesn't make it clear how and why Killebrew's work is notable. What has she achieved that other people in her field have not, for example? What breakthroughs has she made etc? You are welcome to edit the draft to add more detail and re-submit, or re-submit as is, for another reviewer to look at. Hello! I saw your response to a recent review of this article. In accordance with your comments, I have reworked an article about Ukrainian designer Vita kin to make it encyclopedic. I added new information to the biography, supported by links in the media. Also, I added information about the awards and worked on the design of the article. I would be happy if you would consider applying for inclusion in the mainspace. Thanks! 192.71.166.25 (talk) 12:00, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My opinion is this draft should not have been approved. References 1-5 are interviews, and thus do not contribute to notability. The other two refs do little to establish notability either. Perhaps revert to draft so the creator can work on finding better references? David notMD (talk) 19:19, 8 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Based on your suggestions, I have refined the sources for Purdah by removing the IMDB and Amazon citations, and by including some others. There is currently a primary source citation to the website of the Oscar-qualifying Cinequest Film Festival that verifies that Purdah premiered there. There is also a citation of the article about the film's world premiere on the notable film trade publication, Screen Anarchy, in addition to a citation of the film's write up in PRWeb about the film's Los Angeles premiere at the famous Chinese Theatres in Hollywood. I've also listed some of the film's festival awards and nominations as well. There's also links to several positive reviews from recognized film critics who are some of the select few approved Rotten Tomatoes film critics. I've fleshed out the rest of the article and honed it as well. I hope it can be approved, or if not, I would love any additional feedback. Thanks so much! Draft:Ethan_Greenbaum[edit]

Hi-thanks for reviewing my draft == Draft:Ethan_Greenbaum ==

My understanding is the draft is rejected for "not having significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject"

I'm new to wikipedia publishing and a little confused as to what would qualify? There are links to articles about the artist in Forbes Magazine, Bomb Magazine, Interview Magazine and a review of a group show that mentions the artist in The New York Times as well as links to significant exhibitions at major venues like Hauser and Wirth and The Aldrich Museum. Having reviewed other artist wikipedia pages, it's unclear to me why this page is being rejected. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also-do you advise listing print publications for which there are no web links? (i.e. Modern Painters Magazine etc).

Thanks so much

Help with new category[edit]

Hi there, Muriel - it's some time since we have been in touch but I always appreciate your recognition of my stats on WiR. Inspired by David Eppstein's Category:Native American women academics, I thought it might be useful to have Category:New Zealand Māori women academics. I have tried to populate it as best I can but I am not at all sure all the names are those of women (here I often relied on Wikidata) or that I have added all the names of women who should be included. I would really appreciate any assistance you have time to offer.--Ipigott (talk) 17:53, 18 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sorry for the slow reply, I've been out of town on summer holiday! Thanks for the heads-up about this category, I will take a look. I think Stuartyeates has written a lot about women academics in NZ and it would be good for him to look over it as well. Stuart, what do you think? MurielMary (talk) 10:12, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Good work User:Ipigott! I've written about every female prof in New Zealand (or all that I can find) and additional written about every Māori and Pacifica prof in the country. Most of these articles have my fingerprints on them so the lack of the category is probably my fault, I should have created it before. There's some complexity here separating ethnic Cook Islanders from Māori people, I don't usually add people to the Māori cats until I've found an attribution to an iwi / hapu. I also write gendered-pronoun free biographies, so quickly sorting articles into gendered cats may be slower than it might be, sorry. It's also worth noting that there are people like Karl Pulotu-Endemann who don't fit well into cats like these. (Thanks for the notification User:MurielMary.) New article on Christchurch's residential red zone[edit]

Kia ora and hello! I am writing to you because you are a Wikipedian from Christchurch, who has edited the Christchurch Wikipedia meetup. I have just finished creating a new article for Christchurch's residential red zone following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. However, I am an American who has never visited New Zealand, let alone Christchurch, so I would find it helpful for Wikipedians from Christchurch to look over this article. In particular, I am hoping that someone will be able to contribute an image of the zone after demolition and removal of the houses that were there, especially an aerial image.

Thank you! I am an urban planning student with an interest in natural disaster preparation and recovery, so I saw this article as a hole that I could fill on Wikipedia.

Best,

Riverhugger (talk) 09:33, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Kia ora Riverhugger, that looks like a great article! Thanks for creating it! I'll ping a couple of other Christchurch editors here as they are sure to be interested in it too and may have photos to add: Schwede66 and Podzemnik. Cheers! MurielMary (talk) 09:41, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Daisy Edgar-Jones[edit]

Re: your comments here: This actress is the lead actress in a current drama series and to boot has the lead role in the television adaptation of one of the most successful novels in the world last year. This is such a flying pass of WP:NACTOR it would be a WP:SNOW keep at WP:AFD - in what universe, and on what possible basis, would she be a candidate for speedy deletion or PROD? Suggesting that there "just isn't any evidence of notability" and making PROD/speedy nominations displays a worrying lack of understanding of WP:NACTOR and notability guidelines in general for someone approving or declining AfC drafts. The Drover's Wife (talk) 09:27, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We clearly disagree with each other on the quality of this article. However, as I've already stated, neither this page nor the talk page of the PROD project are the appropriate places to discuss the quality of the article and the person's notability. I am still trying to get an appropriate page for the discussion to take place on and meanwhile you are mocking me in quite an inappropriate way. I take exception to the repeated mocking tone that you are using in your messages to me e.g. "you're a comedian" and "in what universe". This tone is not the appropriate tone for one editor to another and I hope you will desist from continuing to use it either with me or with other editors. MurielMary (talk) 09:33, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps someone so completely unfamiliar with Wikipedia's deletion processes that they don't know how to nominate an article for deletion (and repeatedly attempt to use means designed for uncontroversial cases to nominate a clear and unarguable pass of WP:NACTOR despite being reverted by multiple longstanding editors) should do some large-scale guideline and process reading before attempting to judge notability at Articles for Creation. The Drover's Wife (talk) 09:53, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I find your attitude rude, condescending, patronising, accusatory (you seem to be convinced that I am incompetent, saying that I "attempt" to judge notability, that I'm "completely unfamiliar with processes" for example) and unbecoming of a longstanding WP editor like yourself. Your comments are also inaccurate, as my actions have not been "reverted by multiple editors" (two doe not equal multiple, particularly when one of them is yourself). Your behaviour is not at all helpful in building a community of editors. I suggest you do some reading on the meaning of "good faith" and Wikipedia:Civility as you have not demonstrated any of these values tonight; in fact you have not even acknowledged that your edit summary on the article, and your initial response on the PROD talk page, were utterly rude and uncivil. MurielMary (talk) 10:38, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
At WP:AFC, you're in a unique position to bite newbies if you so choose, and declining and then, when contradicted by another editor, repeatedly trying to delete an article that is an extremely clear pass for WP:NACTOR ensures that their first experience of Wikipedia is a bad one despite having done all the right things. That's really not helpful to building a community of editors. I always try to be helpful to people who are generally trying to do the right thing, but I return jerkish behaviour to sender. Your insistence on rudely ploughing on in this course of action without so much as acknowledging the existence of WP:NACTOR when pointed out to you is where you definitively go from the former category to the latter. The Drover's Wife (talk) 12:05, 9 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. You really don't seem to understand the concept of Wikipedia:Civility at all! Don't you see that calling me a jerk is really really uncivil and rude? In fact this whole conversation is very much a personal attack, with you attacking me as a person over and over again. Have you read Wikipedia:No personal attacks recently? Please refresh your memory on why personal attacks aren't permitted here. MurielMary (talk) 08:53, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Your freewheeling evasion of the point, whether concerning your understanding of notability policy or your newbie-biting, is really quite impressive. The Drover's Wife (talk) 08:59, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I would have been willing to discuss those things with a reasonable, polite editor who didn't immediately ascribe bad intentions to every edit I made, but with someone like yourself who came at me fighting and calling me names right from the get-go - nope, no way, not having a discussion and opening myself up to even more abuse!! This is something for you to reflect on - to have a discussion you need to start off respectful, not start off with slinging names around. MurielMary (talk) 09:06, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
People who make edits clearly against guidelines and then adamantly refuse to discuss their edits tend to find they meet with strong criticism. This is the way of things. The Drover's Wife (talk) 12:08, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK MurielMary. This is translated from Polish Wikipedia. The text is from verified sources Anna Janko. OK. I work on the project and add sources. Greetings.Fromzamoscwith (talk) 16:36, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) The Polish Wikipedia is very different than the English one, and the two have different rules about things. I do not edit the Polish Wikipedia, for I cannot speak Polish, but I imagine that it may have different sourcing criteria than we do. The English Wikipedia is fairly rigid in sourcing guidelines, while in my extremely limited experience with other wikis not all have the same rules in the same places. Good luck! -- a lainsane (Channel 2) 16:48, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MM,

Could you please re-review the submission regarding Odette Wilen. It has been 'rejected' by a different reviewer claiming 'Wiki is not a place for Memorial Pages'. This is far more than a 'memorial'. I am unrelated to OW. I was doing historical research on refeeding syndrome when I learned she OW was the only one of 39 women SOE agents from Section F who did not have her wiki bio in English, so I did some more reading and put one together. It is now referenced to many historical citations. Is the other reviewer correct? Many male SOE agents have wiki bios and achieved less. Thank you for your time. Gdoig

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020[edit]

Hello MurielMary,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Request on 20:32:41, 17 February 2020 for assistance on AfC submission by Shansav71[edit]

Hi MurielMary - can you please help me understand specifically what is missing and/or incorrect about my submission? Do I need to cite different sources or is there a problem with the tone or style of the text? This is the first article I have written for Wikipedia and I would love some some guidance to improve this article as well as for achieving success in future submissions. Thank you so much.

Draft review for Noma Copley[edit]

Hi MurielMary. I'm hoping that your previous interest in my article on Rosalind Gersten Jacobs will extend to my related entry on Noma Copley https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Noma_Copley. While she had a notable career as a fine arts jewelry designer and is the co-named founder of the Noma and William Copley Foundation, which is well documented, her story (unlike her then husband's story), has slipped through the cracks. So I made it my job to fix that. I would very much appreciate your taking a look at my revised Wiki entry, which was recently rejected for what was considered an informal tone. I would appreciate your feedback on the multiple revisions I've made and knowing if these concerns have been sufficiently addressed. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.Gaw54 (talk) 14:36, 18 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please take one more look at Draft:Daria Usacheva and Daria Usacheva? You declined the draft at least twice, out of four declines of the draft, and the declines were stripped off the draft (and they say not to strip them off the draft), which appears to be a clear case of gaming the system. An article is now in article space. It doesn't appear that she yet satisfies skating notability. She is much closer to it than she was when you reviewed the draft, but her medals are still all at the junior level, which isn't in the scope of the guideline. However, I think that a before deletion search finds that she is famous for being famous as a young teenage skater, and that is enough for general notability. I don't like general notability, which is too subjective and winds up with arguments at Deletion Review, but it is policy. I don't like the fact that the sports notability guidelines and most of the other special notability guidelines contain language deferring to GNG, saying that a candidate who passes the special notability guideline is usually assumed to pass general notability. That winds up with arguments between the special notability guideline and general notability at DRV. But that is the way that the guidelines are written. However, this seems to be a real case where an article on an athlete should be accepted based on general notability. What do you think? Robert McClenon (talk) 17:37, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback; could you consider reviewing Draft:Felicity Volk again please?[edit]

Thank you for your feedback on Draft:Felicity Volk. As you have probably worked out I am new to content creation on Wikipedia and hopefully your advice on the use of inline citations has helped to improve this draft enough to publish. Reading the guidelines, I am confident that Volk warrants a wikipedia page, but my skills at preparing a reasonable page are still evolving. Any further advice would be appreciated if you still think it is lacking. Cheers. Peter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peterloone (talkcontribs) 13:31, 24 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft article, Draft:Michelle Hannah[edit]

Hello, MurielMary. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Michelle Hannah".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! Bkissin (talk) 13:07, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Eddy Atkinson[edit]

I’m afraid I don’t agree with the changes you made to Ellen Atkinson. Edwin Atkinson was part and parcel of Ellen’s life and important background to her life. Also, you managed to cause issues for the referencing. - Chris.sherlock (talk) 02:10, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What are you talking about?!? Daish’s paddock was completely relevant to Ellen’s life background! - Chris.sherlock (talk) 02:17, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
See comment on article talk page and discuss there so other editors can join discussion. MurielMary (talk) 02:20, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I apologise for the "hilarious" comment. I was frustrated, but that was no excuse. Please though, I spent a long time on that article and I did a lot of research into Ellen Atkinson's life. Your assertions that land rights weren't important to her is... not correct. - Chris.sherlock (talk) 04:03, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the apology. You've misunderstood my meaning around the relationship between land rights and her biography, I'll clarify on the article talk page. MurielMary (talk) 09:53, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I never meant to be so abrupt with you. I do appreciate your work, I’m just a bit prickly. I always regret it, as is happening now. - Chris.sherlock (talk) 13:08, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Vanessa Baraitser[edit]

She is notable for being a judge *in a particular case*. It is therefore not shocking that the article is mostly about that. Your objection is noted and found wanting. --Stalfur (talk) 01:38, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, you are free to re-submit the draft at any time and seek a different editor's opinion. However you should probably read up on the "1 event" notability exclusion criteria i.e. if someone is only notable for one event they may not be notable enough for WP. Thank you![edit]

I want to express my appreciation for accepting my AfC into the main Wiki space. Whenever Wikipedia accepts another woman CEO into its collection of informative articles, especially about a woman of color in a sector noticeably absent of women, such as pharmaceuticals (and science more generally) it is a victory for women and girls whose horizons have just broadened one more notch. Thank you for making Wikipedia a more inclusive place. Mathdestruction (talk) 06:41, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am working on this draft and DGG mentioned the issues with the draft about WP:PEACOCK. It was quite clear and I made a cleanup. What I've understand till now is that it doesn't pass WP:GNG for now. I'd like your suggestion about this. The subject falls under the category British spiritual writers and I tried to follow the same pattern other pages in the category follow. Few examples are William Bloom, Cher Chevalier and Cassandra Eason. Most of the references they have are either their books or articles written by them.

So I'm a bit confused what could've gone wrong. Can I get your input on this one? Lunar Clock (talk) 07:47, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category[edit]

Hi Muriel, as I was going through fixing my category changes, I noticed this edit. Isn't that what Mitch Ames was complaining about? - Chris.sherlock (talk) 21:30, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Chris.sherlock: a specific link to the post where I was "complaining" would be helpful here.
In the case of Fiona Balfour, Category:Australian women business executives is a non-diffusing subcategory of Category:Australian business executives (because gender subcategories are non-diffusing of their gender-neutral parents) so the article belongs in both of those categories. My "complaint" (Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board#Australian women categories, User talk:Chris.sherlock/Archive 2#WP:SUBCAT, User talk:Mitch Ames#Stop!) is regarding inclusion in both subcategory and parent when the subcategory is diffusing the parent on some non-gender criteria, e.g. "writers" (example) or "actresses" (example). Mitch Ames (talk) 02:36, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My user page is not the appropriate place for a discussion about proposed category changes. Feel free to start a conversation somewhere in the "Categories" WikiProject, ping me, and I'll come and participate there. Mitch Ames @Chris.sherlock: MurielMary (talk) 08:19, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Raewyn Dalziel[edit]

How bizarre; this made my jaw drop! Within 12 hours of me setting up a Wikidata profile for Raewyn Dalziel you write her bio. Total coincidence (maybe so because you didn’t link to it), or did my work on Wikidata show up and inspired? I’m asking because if it did show up, I would not know how and where, but would be keen to learn.

Are you looking forward to level 3? Schwede66 08:24, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

LOL! Happy to solve the mystery for you! Her name showed up here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Missing_articles_by_nationality/New_Zealand Usually when I'm at a loose end for who to write about I browse that page (among others) for inspiration. I checked it this morning and was quite shocked that Dalziel was on it (i.e. didn't already have an article) as she's a very distinguished NZ historian; so decided to rectify that right away and start her bio! She's quite a private person, there's not much online about her (where she was born/raised/educated etc). Re Level 3, yes and no - husband and oldest son will be able to go to work, but that means I'm working at home + supervising the other two with their online high school lessons so I will probably be even busier! You? MurielMary (talk) 08:36, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ha, so it was a total coincidence. I had seen her name as author of a number of DNZ bios and thought “is she notable?” Check; make Wikidata entry. L3 is good. As a company, we’ve decided to keep working from home through L3. Wife is “vulnerable” and will work from home, too. Schwede66 16:21, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Guidance on Draft:Carmen Harra[edit]

Hello, MurielMary! Thank you for the guidance you gave me in creating the draft https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Carmen_Harra. After six months in which I followed the instructions step by step, thank you for appreciating the result. Regarding your opinion that writing books and appearing in radio and TV shows does not equal notability, I completely agree. Compared to other writers, Carmen Harra has books in the Library of American Congress, a performance desired by any book author. This woman is known in the world due to her multiple careers: she was a singer in communist Romania, then she became a writer in the USA. Her books are published by major publishers and there are international editions of the books. Please consider when assessing the degree of notability that a woman fled the communist regime, arrived in the most important country in the world, and managed to publish 6 books in the Library of Congress. I appreciate Wikipedia because here I find relevant and verified information about people who have performed in various fields of activity. When I created this draft, I wanted to enrich Wikipedia articles. In a virtual world of social media platforms where only followers and likes establish "notability", I am convinced that Wikipedia remains a landmark of real, tangible objectivity. Thank you so much for the time and for the help! EmanuelB2019 (talk) 08:24, 24 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice[edit]

Hi MurielMary, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

The Child's Bath

The Child's Bath is an 1893 oil-on-canvas painting by American artist Mary Cassatt. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania (now part of Pittsburgh's North Side), but lived much of her adult life in France, where she first befriended Edgar Degas and later exhibited among the Impressionists.

This painting depicts a mother figure and a young child, a genre scene based on the everyday activity of bathing a small child. Cassatt was heavily influenced in her work by some of her fellow Impressionist peers, especially Degas. She also took inspiration from the prints of Japanese woodcuts exhibited at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, being drawn to the simplicity and clarity of the Japanese designs, and the skilful use of blocks of color. The work is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Request on 21:17:12, 9 June 2020 for assistance on AfC submission by MFSinger[edit]

Hi there! This is a question regarding the draft entry for Esther Forman Singer (November 30).

We are trying to address the issue that all the materials we can find online are hidden behind academic or corporate paywalls. Thanks to a research librarian colleague we have three published articles in American Artist, plus a bio of her in the American Artists "Contributors" section, and a "Who's Who In American Artists 2006". Since links to those sources take you to a login, we tried the route of uploading the materials to the official site. It is ok to just link to the paywalled sources? We are trying to do everything right by Wiki rules and practices, but the lack of publicly visible info on Esther Forman Singer is literally the issue we are trying to address. Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

The subject had an album that reached #1 on the Spanish national charts, one of her songs appeared on a popular national TV program, and another song was chosen as the official song for the Spanish women's national basketball team at the World Cup. Statue of Pania[edit]

In the process of linking your new articles to Wikidata, I have discovered that an article on the Statue of Pania already existed. It's called Pania. Afraid you will need to add any additional content you've discovered and then create a redirect. There are a number of images of the statue on Commons, while the one you have used has yet to be transferred there. Oronsay (talk) 21:51, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Oronsay, thanks so much for your work on linking the articles to WD, much appreciated! For Pania, yes there was previously an article which covered both the woman and the statue and I moved the material on the statue into a new page, Statue of Pania. Sorry I'm lost about your comment on adding content (to which article?) and creating a redirect (do you mean from one page to the other, in both directions?) MurielMary (talk) 09:53, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
False alarm! I just revisited Pania and realised that's about the woman and, of course, yours is about the statue. No merging required! Oronsay (talk) 18:13, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Hi MurielMary,

This is to let you know that the featured picture File:Adriaen van Ostade Goyer en Questiers 1650.jpg, which you uploaded or nominated, has been selected as the English Wikipedia's picture of the day (POTD) for July 3, 2020. A preview of the POTD is displayed below and can be edited at Template:POTD/2020-07-03. If you have any concerns, please place a message at Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day. Thank you! Adriaen van Ostade

Adriaen van Ostade (1610–1685) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. He was a prolific artist, and is best known for his genre art, with scenes or events from everyday life, such as markets, domestic settings, interiors, parties, inn scenes, and street scenes.

This oil-on-panel painting, dating to between 1650 and 1655, is entitled The De Goyer family and the painter; Ostade is shown standing on the right. The other people depicted are the seated Hendrick de Goyer, steward of Heemstede; his future wife Anna Questiers, in pink; and her sister, the poet Catharina Questiers, in the centre, perhaps reading one of her poems. The painting is in the collection of the Museum Bredius in The Hague.

Revised Draft for Your Consideration: Diane Johnson Flynn[edit]

Thanks for your feedback on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Diane_Johnson_Flynn

I revised the subject and included notable mentions in published books (including Chip Connely's 'Wisdom at Work') and video interviews with Today, as well as mentions in The Wall Street Journal. I also removed all sources that weren't independent of the subject. Would you mind giving this a review? Thank you. JamesC33401 (talk) 01:01, 23 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jodi Rowley[edit]

Kia ora MurielMary! Thank you for moving Jodi Rowley into namespace! I noticed you removed the year of birth. This I had added after direct communication with the subject of the article herself, because, as you say, it is not mentioned in any of the articles about her. I guess this falls under Wikipedia:Original research? If so, that's no problem. Thanks anyway! Dr Mark D. Scherz 11:56, 25 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Kia ora Mark, the article can only include information that is available in the public domain i.e. in a reliable, published source. If there is a source which states her year of birth then feel free to add it and then you can add the birthdate, but until then, it's "unverified". Hope that helps clarify! Michelle Penelope King[edit]

Hi, MurielMary! I've fixed all the pending issues of identification for Michelle Penelope King (a preferred name for the Wikipedia article because her full name distinguishes her very well from other Wikipedia pages associated with "Michelle King" for other people. Changes made: 1) I removed the wrong link for her "husband" in the Infobox - I virtually checked and verified every citation once again and that was the only wrong one. Obviously, I removed the wrong information from the Infobox 2) It is clear, that she is an author of the books in the "Publication" section, so it makes her easier top identify her - all her articles, books etc related to women and gender equality and also her occupation as Director of inclusion. 3) I couldn't not to establish her origin (not South Africa and not New Zeland) but it is confirmed that she studied and worked as Journalist in New Zeland by the links in the page(you can see her photo in the article - the same person but younger). She used to work as journalist but later in her career she turned to the gender equality activism, writing, publication and the UN work. http://tvnz.co.nz/view/tvone_story_skin/1431554 LinkedIn profile Here are the links which speak about her education in New Zeland and Cranfield University effectively about the same person: https://insight.aut.ac.nz/Breaking-invisible-gender-barriers-through-storytelling (AUT - Auckland University of Technology) https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/som/people/michelle-penelope-king-15199782

4) As I couldn't establish her exact origin, I removed New Zealand category and added categor "people with place of birth mising".

Please, take a look one more time once you find time for it.

Ann Dinham[edit]

Thanks for approving this article and for your comment about the name to use throughout. I've had a look at the MoS recommendation and accept that "Dinham" is the most appropriate style for Wikipedia.

I intend to revisit the article because I do have further things that I could add, although there is, perhaps, a danger of wandering off into detail that might not be very relevant. Do you have any pointers that you could give me, please?

Thanks again, and best wishes Kahuzi (talk) 09:20, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for reviewing, MurielMary. I must have misunderstood the Wikipedia Translation tool and the pages it suggests. Hi Nikki, the draft doesn't show how she meets the notability criteria for a musician on Wikipedia. There are specific criteria listed on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(music)#Criteria_for_musicians_and_ensembles The draft needs to show how (and have references to back up) she meets one or more of those criteria. Hope that helps! MurielMary (talk) 10:53, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you very much for the feedback. I read the criteria and learned a lot. The artist in question does have a song which is a theme song of a Netflix Show called Blood and Water. She has toured through Europe and America. Am I reading the guidelines incorrectly or does this mean she does qualify for a Wikipedia page? Thank you again. Wishing you a lovely day. Kind regardsNikkidiscovers (talk) 10:27, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nikki, if she has a song which is a theme song for a notable show (is Blood and Water notable?) then that would meet criteria #10. However it looks like that is the only criteria she meets, so I don't think she meets the criteria for a WP article, sorry. Touring internationally is not on the list of criteria for notability. Aysulu Onaran[edit]

Hello Muriel,

I wrote a page about Aysulu Onaran and I can´t understand why it was rejected. Most of the information about the person was gave to me from Aysulu Onaran herself. What can I do to have the page published?

Thanks in advance and best regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GeniusUK (talkcontribs) 08:58, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you need to read the notability guidelines and show how she meets these criteria. Also, you need to use reliable, independent sources and add in-line citations to show where all the statements in the article come from. You can't use information from Aysulu herself to write this article as it's not independent and not objective. Read the guidelines here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(people) MurielMary (talk) 10:05, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification on Ali Cross Submission[edit]

Thank you so much for the quick turnaround on the Draft:Ali_Cross submission. I've just contributed on a few articles, so I am still learning the ropes.

I thought this was an article worth writing because she is a USA Today Bestselling author, and is already mentioned within another article: Whitney_Award

With over a dozen published books with accompanying audiobooks, that should rise to the standard of meriting an article.

Can you give me any suggestions on how to proceed from here?

Thanks!

Hello Muriel Mary, I hope this message finds you well and safe! First off I would like to thank you for your help editing my very first contribution, and for your useful feedback. Drafting this article has been quite challenging and time consuming, but such a fantastic learning experience! And I thought I was starting with an easy one! I believe I fixed all the problems you indicated in your second review. Some statements had many details and no references. I found an excellent source for verifiability that contains virtually all the information in my draft. I included it as footnote #2. I'm contacting you again because I'm not sure how to proceed. Shall I simply wait for when you have a chance to look at my draft again, or should I contact the AfC Help Desk? I'm eager to move on to a new article on another feminist film scholar. I don't know if it would be wiser to get this done first. Once again thank you very much! All the best, Lunaandmaya

Hallo MurielMary, I saw your comment at Wikipedia_talk:Disambiguation#When_to_start_a_DAB_page?. I added the three of them to the surname page at King (surname), but for the journalist I wasn't sure what nationality to put for her as the article doesn't mention it. I see you've done quite a lot of work on the article: could you add a nationality to the lead sentence? I guess she's from New Zealand (first degree, and your own field of interest) but there's no nationality or birthplace mentioned. Another editor added a NZ category, but I don't know on what evidence. PamD 07:27, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@PamD: If I may butt in, King has a detailed bio on her LinkedIn page: "Michelle was born in South Africa and immigrated to New Zealand at the age of 16 where she earned a masters in industrial organisational psychology and a post graduate diploma in journalism." Schwede66 08:27, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66: So where does that leave us: "South-African-born New Zealand..."? I'll leave it to MurielMary, as a NZ specialist. It's just that the standard Wikipedia categories, listings, etc always allocate people to a nationality. PamD 08:49, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PamD: @Schwede66: Hi, thanks for the messages here! I intentionally didn't put a nationality in King's lead paragraph as I couldn't find any mention online. Yes, she was educated in NZ but without any definite information about where she was born I left it out. Schwede, I don't think her LinkedIn biography is usable in a biography? MurielMary (talk) 10:34, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No, it’s not usable. But it certainly gives the correct info and that may help with subsequent work (eg it can he used for more specific Google searches). Schwede66 18:07, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate the rapid review of my draft article on Sarah McKenzie - painter! I'll make the changes that you suggested, adding the awards to the body of the article and providing citations for those. I do have a question about non-Internet sources such as printed books. Can I/should I also list those in the references, even if the content isn't retrievable online? I am new to Wikipedia, so learning as I go.

Thank you! Painter80302Painter80302 (talk) 12:40, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, yes you can use sources which are not online in the article, sure. Are you using Visual Editor to edit, or "edit source"? If you use Visual Editor, and choose "add citation" then "book" you will get a screen with blank fields which you can fill with the relevant information for a book. Hope that helps! Postcard from the Coast #1[edit]

Postcard from the West Coast

Sunday 6 September: Blackball

Welcome to the West Coast Wikipedian at Large project! This is your first weekly postcard with updates on what's been happening and ideas for things to do. • Yesterday I drove from Nelson to Blackball down the Inangahua River valley, taking plenty of photos (see my uploads), through Lyell, New Creek, Inangahua Junction (sic), Oweka, Rotokahu, Larrys Creek, Cronadun, Waitahu, and Reefton to visit the museum in Blacks Point, then on to Formerly the Blackball Hilton. Lots of these places need an article, improvements, or photos. • Inangahua is actually three localities: Inangahua Landing, Inangahua Junction (munted by the 1968 earthquake), and Inanguahua proper where most people live – the article's a bit confused. • This week I'll be in Greymouth giving a talk to heritage folks and another to tourism operators, and running an edit-a-thon on Saturday. It would be great for people to take a look at the Grey District library system who'll be hosting the edit-a-thon and see what Wikidata coverage is like. Libraries and museums are on the Art page of the project. • I had a really good Afghan in Reefton (right) and realised the article is terrible. Research needed! And more photos, if anyone wants an excuse to bake. • Housekeeping: please do note your contributions on the daily Progress Report: prizes for quality, quantity, and anything else I like. User:Schwede66 has been powering ahead. There's room to add a little more to the To Do list, but I want every red link blue by the end of October – plenty to do already! Thank you all. • Take care — Giantflightlessbirds

Hi! My submission for draft:amber ardolino was rejected saying that the submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a wikipedia article, meanwhile I have seen a couple wikipedia articles of people with less references that exist. I'm sure the references can be checked first to see that the subject does in fact qualify for a wikipedia article as there are a few article for reference on the subject. Thank you!

Toomuchbroadway (talk) 15:56, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Happening to look in here, it matters a little what the references say: Your lead paragraph says: she starred in several musicals in Broadway, but she did not: she had a named role in only one-- in the others, she was a member of the ensemble or an understudy. .Similarly on television. At this stage of her career, she will not get a genuine review significant enough to show herself notable. And dn fact, all there is there in the way of references in mentions. There are many hundred thousand articles in WP accepted in earlier years when the standards were lower that we need to either upgrade or remove. The least we can do is not add to them.
ven more important, Since this is your only contribution, and since it is written in the format of a press release, it is reasonable to ask whether you are a connected contributor, in which case you must declare the connection. Please see our rules on Conflict of Interest If you are writing this for pay or as a staff member of the organization, see also WP:PAID for the necessary disclosures. Request on 03:03:56, 12 September 2020 for assistance on Monique Skidmore submission by Anthropologist2020[edit]

<!Hello, I am requesting assistance about my submitted piece "Monique Skidmore" as this is my first foray into Wikipedia and I have had an article rejected, I think because there seems to be some suspicion that it is 'paid editorial' or in some other way a paid promotion. It is not, and I have included references. I cannot find any way to prove that something is not paid editorial if it isn't! I'd be grateful to know what more I can provide (if more is necessary), thank you> Anthropologist2020 (talk) 03:03, 12 September 2020 (UTC)Anthropologist2020[reply]

What you need to do is make a declaration on the draft page that there is no coi monetary or otherwise, and let me know on my user page. I will then revaluate. If there is no coi you are not required to say how you came to write the article, but it wouldn;t hurt to indicate somethign--but try to avoid saying just who you are---if you are not a coi editor, you have the right to anonymity. Postcard from the West Coast

Sunday 14 September: Greymouth

Hello all from Greymouth! There are now a dozen of you from Australia and New Zealand signed up to help, which is wonderful. • The last week has seem some great work, especially from Schwede66, MurielMary, and DrThneed, busily creating categories, stubs, and some really nice articles like Hokitika Clock Tower • This last week I'll been in Greymouth, and gave a talk to the library staff, spoke to half a dozen tourism operators, and had a great edit-a-thon on Saturday, where the partcipants were so keen they organised another one in two weeks! • Check out Axel's reorganisation of the Greymouth category and see if there are photos that need articles. • The Greymouth article needs work, a gallery of historic buildings, and more references from news media and books. • Plenty of old buildings in the list to work on • Siobhan wants Wikidata for all NZ reserves, and I would like all tracks and walkways in Wikidata too, like the Rapahoe Range Scenic Reserve and Elizabeth Point Walkway – I took a bunch of photos there yesterday • Some of our new articles have been flagged (wrongly) because there weren't enough references yet; not to worry, but help if you can. I'm digging through local archives here for good sources. Here's a Google drive of local news stories by the way. • There'll be lots more photos going up in the next week so watch this space. In the meantime keep an eye on my uploads, photos from History House Museum, and more from the Grey District Library to see of there's something you can use. • Housekeeping: please do remember to jot down your contributions on the daily Progress Report, just so others can see and help out. Thank you all for you hard work! • Take care — Giantflightlessbirds

question about my draft on Alicia Luna[edit]

Hello MurielMary: thank you very much for your prompt feedback on my new article on Spanish screenwriter Alicia Luna! I'm ready to follow your instructions! A quick question, before I do anything wrong. As I indicated on Draft talk:Alicia Luna, I translated this article from the Spanish Wikipedia. Would I be allowed to use the Spanish original as a reference (by adding a footnote)? I thought I could not add new inline citations if they are not present in the Spanish original. You say there are only 3 or 4 in the whole article, but I see 10 references. Maybe I don't understand what is the difference between a reference and an inline citation. Once again, thank you! Hello MurielMary, I just added links to three more videos of television news programs dedicated to Carole Alexis and Ballet des Amériques as well as links to two additional articles about Carole Alexis and Ballet des Amériques, one of them a review of the most recent performances choreographed by Carole Alexis. There are now references (links) to 8 substantial articles dedicated exclusively to Carole Alexis and her work and to 4 videos of news programs dedicated exclusively to Carole Alexis and her work. These 12 independent publications are based on independent journalistic research and/or on interviews with Carole Alexis and/or on attendance of live performances of her work. Almost all publications feature visual and/or audio-visual documentation (photos, video recordings) of the work of Carole Alexis. I would respectfully like to ask you to review these references (links) and let me know whether I can resubmit the article on Carole Alexis for inclusion in Wikipedia on this basis. I also saw the note "This article or section contains close paraphrasing of a non-free copyrighted source, https://www.balletdesameriques.company/carole-alexis. Ideas in this article should be expressed in an original manner." Having reviews my article and the referenced source, however, I am at a loss trying to determine wherein the close paraphrasing lies. After all, the biographical sketch I am submitted is a mere three paragraphs, while the referenced source is quite substantial. Perhaps you could guide me in this matter as well? Your help with this is very much appreciated. Best regards, --Giovannijacopo talk 21:22, 20 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard from the West Coast

Sunday 20 September: Westport

Hi from Westport! The ridiculously nice weather has largely continued. According to Wikipedia the Holcim cement works is here, but I'm pretty sure it closed in 2016. Work needed on that article! • One result of appearing on Seven Sharp is that Tourism New Zealand and the Glacier tourism folks are now interested in chatting. Watch this space, I may be headed south soon. • MurielMary and DrThneed have been helping with the West Coast artists list, many thanks – I may have more print sources for bios. The Yvonne Rust book is good. • There's been some great teamwork this past week, with Canley and Schwede66 sorting out all the West Coast heritage buildings in Wikidata without photos, and me running round Westport with my camera taking pics of them. • About half the Stewart Nimmo photos are uploaded, and keep an eye on my uploads for more. Look for inventive uses: I added one to the selfie article. • I'll be working on Denniston Plateau, the Westport News, Becky Manawatu, EPIC Westport, the Kawatiri Coastal Trail, Granity, and Barrytown; all help appreciated. • This week I have a few more days at Westport and will do a day trip to Granity, then down to Hokitika on Friday for 10 days to work with the Museum and heritage groups. So do tackle Westport content this week; I can ask the Westport News for clippings if you need more sources. • Housekeeping: add what you do to the daily Progress Report, so we can all see and help! • Take care — Giantflightlessbirds

Postcard from the West Coast

Sunday 27 September: Hokitika

Greetings from sunny Hokitika! The fine weather I've had for the last few weeks finally broke and it's been driving hail and wind today. • Last week in Westport was fun, talking to many local historians and photographers, and the Westport News (rewritten article) • Saturday I ran a workshop in Hokitika, yesterday a second one in Greymouth. One newbie improved the Dave McKenzie (runner) article and squealed when her changes showed up instantly in Google. Another ran out to take photos of the Pioneers' Memorial (right), and Schwede66 created an article that very night • This week I'd love help with Hokitika-area articles: sculptures of Hokitika, buildings of Hokitika, Guy Menzies, Hokitika Guardian (am meeting them tomorrow to get better sources), whitebait (the NZ aspect), Kaniere, Lake Kaniere, pounamu, Lake Mahinapua, Hokitika Gorge, The Luminaries, and the Hokitika River. This is a list brainstormed with the locals at the workshop, heartily recommend • There are more photos by Stewart Nimmo of Lake Brunner and Reefton (including the artist Alison Hale (Q99304897), who's on our list. • It would be super helpful of somebody to look at the Hokitika area on WikiShootMe and check the locations of rivers, hills, etc against NZ Topo Map or the NZGB Gazetteer. • Dr Thneed wanted a photo through the altar window of St James Church, Franz Josef, and that same day Paora supplied one. Great teamwork, folks – it's been so nice to watch you collaborate. • Housekeeping: keep noting your contributions on the daily Progress Report. Thank you all for your hard work. • Stay warm and dry! — Giantflightlessbirds

Sunday 4 October: Hokitika

Kia ora from Hokitika! Tomorrow I pack up the car and head to Greymouth to present to Development West Coast our previous month's work, before heading south • Yes, Glacier Country are supplying accommodation in south WestlandŌkārito, Franz Josef, and Fox – for the next two weeks. Possibly because I mouthed off to the media that Fox Glacier's entry is so short who would want to stay there? • So this week it's Ōkārito (splitting the article into settlement and lagoon), kōtuku, spoonbills, the West Coast Wildlife Centre (Q99767675), rowi, Franz Josef glacier (and NZ glacier photos in general glacier articles), historic buildings thereabouts, etc • I uploaded lots of Stewart Nimmo photos of the Haast area, and have some Paparoa ones by Jase Blair coming soon. • Pakoire noticed that Fayne Robinson (Q99836010) needs an article – can we collaborate on one? He's def notable and we need more coverage of Māori from the Coast. • Also women: see the Westland women in the WikiProject Hokitika Museum Google doc and Hokitika Museum Google drive. • Last week I wrote or improved articles about Hokitika Museum, Lake Kaniere, History House Museum, Lake Mahinapua, and Westland District Library. Error check, cleanup etc welcome. It's great to be able to work from folders and scrapbooks stuffed full of newspaper clippings! • Housekeeping: Thank you all for collaborating and filling in gaps, especially with historic buildings. Paora has been doing some great work. Please keep letting me know of any photos you need taking on the spot. • Take care — Giantflightlessbirds
Gorgeous Lake Kaniere. Yes, it really does look like this.

Draft: Jamie Morgan[edit]

Hi MurielMary, thanks for reviewing the draft. It's a pleasure to meet you and great to see Wikipedia editing so strong in New Zealand! As for Jamie, she played in the European qualifier against other European countries. She played softball for a top US college and she's now a coach. If this isn't sufficient for the page. Fair enough. I thank you for taking the time to review it. MaskedSinger (talk) 17:16, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, there isn't a specific notability guideline for softball players in the list of guidelines for athletes here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(sports) However, the usual notability threshold is to have played in an international competition rather than a regional one. You're welcome to resubmit the draft if you'd like someone else to take another look at it though. Happy editing! MurielMary (talk) 18:47, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard from the West Coast

Sunday 11 October: Franz Josef

Gidday from Franz Josef/Waiau! Deserted tourist town, everything's a bit pricey, but there are kea circling over the main street which makes up for a lot • I just spent three days in Ōkārito, wrote articles about pakihi and Ōkārito lagoon, and took/was given a lot of photos of Kōtuku and hiking trails. A dearth of printed sources on Ōkārito but there are enough photos and info to make at least sections/galleries for buildings like Donovan's Store (Q79300924), Ōkārito School (Q79303038), and Ōkārito Obelisk (Q79309599) on its article • There are too many photos of Franz Josef glacier! It would be great to make a curated gallery of the most useful ones on its Commons page. Also finding and uploading good photos from DigitalNZ and the Macmillan Brown A. C. Graham Collection would help heaps • Local heritage sites that need articles: the Hendes Gallery, Defiance Hut, Chancellor Hut • I'll be spending Tuesday in the West Coast Wildlife Centre, looking at baby kiwi and improving Haast Tokoeka and Rowi articles • Great to see a new Fayne Robinson article from Pakoire, and Maida Bryant from MurielMary; Paora's been beavering away on lists of mayors • Housekeeping: do reach out to any of the team for a hand if some random editor knocks you back or makes trouble. Don't let them rattle you! We're here to help each other. • Take care and be kind — Giantflightlessbirds
In a few decades the Waiho River bed will be higher than Franz Josef. Won't that be fun!

Final Postcard from the West Coast

Friday 23 October:Reefton

Kia ora koutou from Reefton! • We're in the last few days of the project, so time to wrap up loose ends. • Most of the last week I was based in in Fox Glacier, organising photo uploads from Fox Glacier Guiding of the glacier itself and Chancellor Hut, check them out • I've also photographed hiking trails and worked on articles about the West Coast Wildlife Centre, Lake Gault and Lake Matheson • Here in Reefton I'm improving the article about the town, have found info on the Inangahua County Library for DrThneed, and am writing about the Reefton Distillery • There are photos of all of Reeftons's historic buildings (and I've added a few), but no articles about the Reefton Courthouse or the Reefton School of Mines, and the Reefton Power Station article could do with work • Since I last wrote DrThneed has been hard at work on libraries, there's a nice Donovan's Store article from Gertrude206, much-needed improvements to pounamu by Pakoire, and Paora's been super-industrious with historic buildings but most importantly managed to produce a photo of the giant sandfly of PukekuraHousekeeping: I'm sending out prizes kindly donated by Development West Coast and Friends of Waiuta to those of you who've worked hardest on the project, so if I ask for a postal address that's why. But even if you just signed up to get these postcards, that's fine too! • Thank you all for making a wonderful project work; I've never coordinated a team effort like this, and I think it's potentially a model for other edit-a-thons. Its been great fun. And I hope this has inspired you to keep chipping away, improving the coverage of New Zealand's beautiful West Coast. Ka kite ano, — Giantflightlessbirds

Dear MurieMary, Many thanks for having a look at the page about Carrie Severino. My sincere apologies for getting it wrong the first time; it never occurred to me that those of us living in America and watching the news would have any doubts whatsoever about the power and influence of the subject of the page as an actor in contemporary American politics. But of course Wikipedia is global, and I should have known better. I do hope the changes make the subject's importance clear; if not, I am happy to edit this page further, which I plan to do anyway. But in light of current events, it seem valuable to have this page up as quickly as possible so that the public at large can benefit and contribute. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Toni Severin), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Jiny Lan[edit]

The draft article about Jiny Lan was polished, and I'm not surprised that you moved it to article space. However, I've stuck a COI template on the result, explaining the template at Talk:Jiny_Lan#Yes,_COI. -- Hoary (talk) 01:13, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol December Newsletter[edit]

Hello MurielMary,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Rank Username Num reviews Log

10 Utopes (talk) 3,958 Patrol Page Curation
Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Draft:Grizelle González[edit]

Hello! Thanks for reviewing the draft page for Dr. Grizelle González. I am a college professor and this semester my students did a project researching influential academics and writing wiki pages about them. This page was written and submitted by one of my students. I'm chiming in to note that the notability for academics doesn't require someone to be past associate professor and, second, that Dr. Gonzalez works for the US Forest Service and not a university, so her rank isn't analogous to assist/assoc/full professor. I think she could be considered notable under criteria #1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(academics). Could you reconsider this page for submission to go live? Thanks for your consideration! Csoconn (talk) 20:16, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, as I noted in the review comment, I don't think there is sufficient evidence in the draft to show that she has had a significant impact on her field. Suggest more details are added which show her impact on the field and then re-submit for another review. All the best! MurielMary (talk) 01:52, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I hope I'm doing this right; I haven't really contributed to Wikipedia before. I just wanted to thank you for accepting my article on the NZ environmentalist Jennifer Ann Campbell! Although hard to convey in a Wikipedia article (especially with limited sources available), she truly is a remarkable woman who keeps fighting for our environment on the front lines. I admire her a lot and I'm glad I could show her my recognition with a (now public) article on Wikipedia. Thanks again and happy holidays! Hi David, thanks for the note! That's a great first article and I hope you continue contributing to Wikipedia. If you're in New Zealand or particularly interested in writing about NZ, we have a few ways to connect with other Wikipedia editors: if you're on facebook, search up the Wikipedia New Zealand group; and on Wikipedia you can see a link to a group of new editors who get together on Zoom to share ideas and ask questions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/Aotearoa_New_Zealand_Editor_Support Keep in touch here if you like, happy to help with any questions. Request on 11:39:55, 26 December 2020 for assistance on AfC submission by Flixoye[edit]

Hi MuriMary, this is one of the author page. We have added most of the references. Can you please help us how can improve this. awaiting for your response.

Flixoye (talk) 11:39, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You reasonably declined it, but I wasn't sure whether this should be an exception. So, just like I did for a similar situation at NPP my first few months here , I accepted it and sent it to afd for a community decision. DGG ( talk ) 06:29, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 21:57:59, 28 December 2020 for assistance on AfC submission by Kentuckian in NY[edit]

Hi, MurielMary. I'm a little confused as to why this author isn't considered "worthy" of a Wikipedia page. Your reason provided — that there need to be more "published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject" — isn't logical. There are already 13 references, which is more than double the amount given for her male husband, Andrew Shaffer, who has long had a page. Are the requirements higher for women than they are for men? How many sources are enough?

Or is it the quality of the sources linked? Are outlets like NPR, Los Angeles Times, and Marie Claire — all of which are referenced in the entry — not considered "reliable" by Wikipedia?

Thank you for helping me better understand what needs to be done here. Kentuckian in NY (talk)

Kentuckian in NY (talk) 21:57, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Quick note to follow up: Since posting I saw in your bio that you are likely not in the United States. National Public Radio (NPR) is a HIGHLY respected national news outlet here. Los Angeles Times is likewise a respected, national outlet. And Marie Claire is an international women's magazine owned by news conglomorate Hearst. Happy to clarify the notoriety or integrity of any other sources mentioned. Kentuckian in NY (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 22:01, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, a couple of points to make here. 1, note the instruction on the submission review template which states: Please do not remove reviewer comments or this notice until the submission is accepted. You deleted my review decision and reason, so I have re-instated it. 2, sources for a biography need to be in-depth sources which focus on the person and their achievements. Some of the sources provided only mention Reisz in passing e.g. the one from The Loop is an article on the genre and has short paragraphs about six different books, of which Reisz's is one. So that doesn't qualify as an in-depth source focusing on her. It's not really a question of "how many sources are enough", it's more a matter of "how specific and how in-depth are the sources". Hope this helps. MurielMary (talk) 03:01, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Muriel. Not sure if I was supposed to, but I did not receive any notice you had responded. Just an FYI I manually visited your page after I saw and had responded to your other edits, etc. I appreciate your response, but it feels HIGHLY subjective. I don't know if you're a writer (I am, which is why I'm familiar with RITA, LAMBDA, and other literary awards). To have an article that's only on your book and five others is pretty darn in-depth. Authors long for that type of coverage. Also, that's only one example. Out of what is now 15 sources provided on the page. Again, I ask: There are hundreds of entries about male authors on Wikipedia that provide less than half the sources provided at Tiffany Reisz, including the entry on her husband! Is the bar higher for entries about women? Or is it higher for members of the LGBT community, which in my searching for more sources to please you, I discovered last night Reisz is? One of the new sources I added last night (Thrillist) is 100% focused on Reisz. Respectfully, what else are you arbitrarily expecting here? Kentuckian in NY (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 19:45, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm not sure why you didn't receive a response that I had replied. Maybe you have to put my talk page on your watchlist, I don't know. I have responded to your query about sources already (above) and also put this response on the draft page too. I see that you decided to revert the edits I made with the reviewer decision and comments, although I clarified for you both here and on the draft page itself that the Wikipedia policy for articles for creation is to leave all reviewer decisions and comments on the draft until it is accepted. My advice to you now is to edit the article as you wish, leaving my decision and comments on it, then re-submit for another review. Further advice on the nature of appropriate sources can be sought at The Teahouse. All the best, MurielMary (talk) 21:46, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Came here after the AFC Talk page note. MurielMary, FYI, notifications will only go to someone you reply to if you ping them or link their user page directly using {{ping}}/{{re}} or {{to}} or {{u}}, etc. or by using a wikilink like User:MurielMary. Just wanted to point that out for future reference. -2pou (talk) 17:55, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Janire Nájera[edit]

Janire Nájera is not my entry. I saw your note that you've scheduled it for deletion on my talk page, but you might have better luck directing that toward the user who created it or users who have been working on it, etc. It's not my page, though, so I don't want to take responsibility for someone else's hard work, thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kentuckian in NY (talkcontribs) 23:09, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's usual practice/common courtesy to inform editors who've recently edited an article that it's been proposed for deletion. See the advice: " You should notify the article's creator or other significant contributors by adding the tag or other appropriate text to contributor talk pages." at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Proposed_deletion MurielMary (talk) 23:35, 29 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
