What are you doing

What is the reasoning for your deletion nomination of the TLI Archive? That is the worst example of tendentious editing I have ever encountered and lacks levels of good faith that is astounding. Please also view the discussion at the Village pump policy page: 14-day deadline for proposals on Wikipedia project pages?, where editors disagree with your decree of enforcing a 14-day deadline for top-importance article proposals on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Food and drink/tli page, upon which time nominations would be considered to have "failed."
You stated in an edit summary on the TLI page that this is Wikipedia "policy," but it appears that no such policy exists. The project page historically receives few page views (check views), and it's unlikely that nominations would consistently receive input within the relatively short time span of 14 days. Better to allow more time for people to have a chance to contribute. Hopefully this serves to clarify matters per your comment above. Hi there Northamerica1000! I've noticed you have yourself listed as a member of the Food and Drink Wikiproject. Unfortunately it looks like the project has been slowly sliding into inactivity except for a couple of people. That makes me a sad potato, and nobody likes a sad potato amirite?

If you'd like to turn my frown upside down, can you do two small things?

First off, go here and add {{Tick}} (checkY) next to your name if you're still part of the project.

Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.

Split of List of cuisines complete

List of cuisines had grown huge. Following WP:SPLIT, I broke it up into smaller lists (which are still pretty big):

Maybe it will be easier to bring these more moderately-sized lists to FL status. The first one that makes it may pave the way for the rest.

Getting back to List of cuisines, the leads in the sections Oceanian cuisine and Cuisines of the Americas need some work, as they don't go into any detail like the other section leads do.

Working on the lists led me to notice that there currently is no article on Oceanian cuisine.

Hello Transhumanist: The split makes sense, and the new articles look nice. One important matter is that more links to these new articles need to be placed in other articles, so people will become aware of their existence. Clicking on the "What links here" link on the left menu of pages generates a listing of what articles link to them (if you weren't already aware of this option). So, at this time, merging the remaining content from Global cuisine remains, to repurpose that page to be exclusively about the topic of Global cuisines. Perhaps we can collaborate to create an article on Oceanic cuisine sometime too! Cheers, Northamerica1000(talk) 05:27, 26 May 2013 (UTC)
I'm glad you like them. I too find the "What links here" feature very useful, especially in WP:AWB. Concerning Global cuisine, I've revised its lead, limiting its context to a type of cuisine (cuisines that have gone global), as opposed to its previous context of all cuisine. Though the all-inclusive context of the term should probably be explained, along with the scope of the rest of the article.
Since the goal of the outline department is to outline all knowledge, I'm spread pretty thin. Though I'll include your projects in the spread. I find your enthusiasm inspiring.

I know you already have portal barnstar, but your work on these is so good you deserve another. Just been looking at things like the ecology and global warming portals to get some inspiration for the one on hunger. If only the actual articles were as good as your portals. I see for example the critical main article on GW is largely based on old sources, despite the abundant recent research. If only all active editors would spend at least half as much time improving content as they do on attacking others and trying to destroy other folks work!

It's all good. I added Portal:Geography because the portal covers geographic topics that are within countries. Here's some examples: Portal:Geography/Featured picture/9, Portal:Geography/Featured picture/7, Portal:Geography/Featured article/9. However, I also understand the viewpoint that it's not the best fit. It's more about including a link for the "related" topic of geography in general. If you decide to remove it, I won't revert. A couple of days ago I added the information back to the article in the lead, "Ice luges have also been described as a type of drinking game," because the sources state so. I didn't do so before because I prefer not to waste my time edit warring with an editor about a 12-word sentence in an article, despite the content being verified by 2 reliable sources. I hear what "Northamerica" is saying, and thanx a lot of your recent edits to some of the other list pages that Curb Chain has been unfortunately haunting (for lack of better term) for way too long now. Regarding Portal:Globalization, would you like me to set-up the page queues for the selected person, article and picture sections? If so, just let me know. Also, some suggestions include: 1) move the categories onto the main page in a full width box with a 30em divider, because people may not necessarily click on subpage links, 2) change the "About the Globalization Portal..." link in the intro to "Read more..." with a link to the Globalization article. All have 10 subpages formatted at this time. To add more, just copy and paste the template from a current entry to more subpages. I'm not versed in setting up the queues to load a new article every week. I've seen instances where portals aren't maintained and then the weekly selections become red links as a result, so it may be easier just to have the the purge (view new selections) in place on the main page (it's currently there) so viewers can shuffle to new entries. Citations in leads, convenience foods

When rewriting the lead of an article, you don't need to cite it. The lead, per WP:Lead, is a summary of the article it is introducing. So unless you're dealing with really contentious information, the citations should be in the body.

Good job expanding this, you should also restore the lead to its previous length and format to separate the ideas into individual paragraphs. --Jeremy (blah blah • I did it!) 19:25, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Closing 'Pakeha Party' deletion discussion

According to the non-admin closing policy, it isn't only consensus but also "taking account of Wikipedia policies and guidelines" which have been cited in the arguments made, and non-admin closing should be avoided for controversial subjects. Some editors stated that the topic has received enough coverage in reliable sources to qualify an article, and others have stated that it has not, and the number of editors opining either way is just about 50/50 (I know that AfD is not an !vote count, and I took all of the arguments into consideration). Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Donegal

First off, thanks for the barnstar! Appreciate that. Regarding the revert you made to my edit, you might have seen that User:Oknazevad has reverted it back. Just wanted to apologize for not writing an edit summary, and being more clear about my change. Not many editors edit the Indian whisky section, so I kind of thought a minor move would go unnoticed. MIL-W-46374 section blanking

Why did you remove the properly marked quotations on the mil-w-46374 page claiming copyvio?

There were too many copy/paste copyright violations in the article, despite the information being denoted with quotation marks. Per Wikipedia:Copyright violations, brief quotations are allowed per the Wikipedia:Non-free content guideline (where it states in part in this second link, "There is no automatic entitlement to use non-free content in an article or elsewhere on Wikipedia. Articles and other Wikipedia pages may, in accordance with the guideline, use brief verbatim textual excerpts from copyrighted media, properly attributed or cited to its original source or author, and specifically indicated as direct quotations via quotation marks...), but significant portions of the article had verbatim copy/pasted information from non-free sources. Some of the verbatim copyvios were short paragraphs, and hence unacceptable. I left a couple of quotes in the MIL-W-46374 article, but removed the longer ones per these policies. One can still utilize the various sources, which I retained in the references section as listed sources, but the information needs to be written in a non-plagiarism type of manner. One quote you deleted was a single sentence. By "a significant portion" do you mean 9 sentences in one place and another 1 sentence in another place in a 10,000 byte article making roughly 2% of the article? Also, the 9 sentence quote perfectly fit the usage of quotes, it provided the author's opinion about the evolution of watch dial fonts. Doing it any other way would have been skirting original research. I do see you left in two quotes that were added for expediency, a much weaker argument for non free use. Also, why do you put "quote" in text in front of quotations? Anything less than one sentence almost wouldn't qualify as a quote in the first place, and even that wasn't "brief" enough for your arbitrary standards. I'd rather not leave the section blanked, so please fill the section in a bit. As for I think your leaving a tag that the subject is trivial, watches were the supercomputers of the 1940s. Watches are how passenger airplanes and bombers were able to fly from place to place. I wouldn't really call that trivial.TeeTylerToe (talk) 12:14, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
I've restored a single-line quote that I removed from the article. I hesitate to restore more direct-quote information, because doing so is within the realm of copyright infringement, which is a serious matter on Wikipedia. It's important for Wikipedia content to respect copyright. The word "quote" was placed to denote that it's a quote from a source. Again, feel free to use the sources, but it's always better to rewrite the information to eliminate plagiarism. I don't have time right now to populate the Dial font section of the article with fresh text that is non-plagiarized or in copyright infringement, but please feel free to do so yourself, since you appear to have a strong interest in the topic. The entire Dial font section in the article (diff page) was copy/pasted verbatim from a source, and was clearly a copyright infringement due to the length of the text, regardless of the quotation marks that were present. The message you received was automatically sent when un-reviewing an article using Wikipedia's page curation. The reason I un-reviewed it is because no sources are present in the article. Wikipedia articles require sources to verify content. Part of the reviewing process is to ensure that articles are factual, and without any sources present in the article to confirm this, it shouldn't have been marked as reviewed. Also, the article is tagged with the topic possibly being non-notable per WP:GNG (which you placed). Plainly put, the article needs sources to attain a proper "reviewed" status. I see that I have fallen victim to one of the recent changes to the way Wikipedia works. I had assumed that the protocol for clicking on the link to review a new page was the same as it used to be under the old new pages patrol years ago, where clicking the link in effect meant "I have reviewed the page, and I have either decided that it is OK, or else decided that it is not OK, and decided on appropriate action to take about it", but I now find instead that it is supposed to mean something more like "I have reviewed the page, and I have decided that it is OK." The change seems pretty daft to me, because it means that if there are serious problems with a new page, no matter how many editors have checked it, seen the problems, and taken action such as tagging it for improvements, watchlisting it, posting messages about the problems to the creator of the article, maybe even nominating it for deletion, etc etc, the page will still be left on the unreviewed list, wasting the time of other people who come along to review a page that is already being dealt with. However, I suppose I will try to follow the new protocol in the future, now that you have drawn my attention to it. JamesBWatson (talk) 13:42, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
Upon review, the Wikipedia:New pages patrol page has received some relatively new changes. The page now focuses more upon whether or not articles immediately qualify for speedy deletion (e.g. in the "Patrolling new pages" section, the relatively new statement "The primary task of new page patrollers is to identify new pages that meet the criteria for speedy deletion."). I appreciate your bringing this matter to my attention, because it piqued me to check out the New pages patrol page, which again, has been recently somewhat modified. At any rate, happy editing! Wikipedia gets sillier and sillier. To try to find the guidelines or instructions for this, I followed a link in your message above to Special:NewPagesFeed, and there I found a link labelled "Learn more", which took me to Wikipedia:Page Curation/Help. There I found that "Mark as Reviewed" "means that you carefully reviewed that page and did not find any serious problems", which is what led to my comment above. Now you call my attention to Wikipedia:New pages patrol, which gives radically different guidelines to those given in Wikipedia:Page Curation/Help. So we have two features which might reasonably be seen as essentially variations on the same thing, but which have very different standards for us to follow. I could easily spend a long time telling you how and why I think this sort of thing is increasing all the time on Wikipedia, but I shall leave it. One last comment, though: I find that Wikipedia:New pages patrol bears almost no resemblance to what it was when I read and studied it a few years ago. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:10, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
Ugh! At any rate, the NPP page remains somewhat open-ended, so if one feels that the content is generally suitable for the encyclopedia (e.g. unlikely to qualify for speedy deletion), then perhaps it's acceptable to mark an article as reviewed despite it being unsourced. Since NPP acts as a first line of defense, perhaps it's appropriate for the guidelines there to be somewhat lax. Verified geographic locations are often retained. That said, it would be nice if the article had some sources to at least verify content within it. It seems that the content on both pages you cite above should eventually be standardized, to say the least, but where's the time? Overall, the relatively new curation page works really nice, though. I never actually thought that the article was suitable. I tagged it for sources and notability, rather than immediately posting a PROD, to allow a chance for people to provide evidence of notability, but I intended to keep an eye on it with a view to considering a PROD if no evidence came after a while. "A while" might have been a few weeks, but this conversation has prompted me to go ahead with a PROD now. JamesBWatson (talk) 08:53, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Out of curiosity, why do you oppose removing George W. Bush to add Henry Clay? Henry Clay was one of the most influential American politicians of the 19th century, responsible for the American System, the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. By contrast, George W. Bush did very little good for the country or for the world. And he only left the White House four years ago, so his legacy is still undefined. Seems to me that it's pretty clear Clay is more important than W pbp 17:13, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
