Maybe tied to Kamāmalu?

Just FYI. I haven't really decided how far I'm digging into this. Background, the famous, and very old, Willows Restaurant on Oahu has always claimed to be on property once owned by Kamāmalu. History of the Willows. In its hey-day, a very famous place for local celebrities in Hawaii to be seen. So, I've been gradually scanning through the pages of Men and Women of Hawaii, and ran across the image of Emma Kaleionamoku Hausten who very much looks like she could be Hawaiian. pp293-294 Possible article by me (or not...depending on sources). She's the woman who first opened the Willows restaurant in the mid-late 1930s. She was born on Maui in 1878 to Chang Ai and Kahalekenekaoli Kaluahine. According to the restaurant "about" info, she somehow came into possession of the land/house now known as the Willows. Actually thanks for the link to Men and Women of Hawaii. I did not know it was online. I was using to cite about the Dowager Princess Kawānanakoa, who was a ward of Nani Alapai...There is even an image of her too bad it is not PD.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 20:26, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

No particular interest in any individual, except for what I previously gleened about Bina Mossman. I was perusing the book to see who else might be of interest. There are several years of that book via Hathi. In some ways, these books are more of a social register than any real accomplishments. Sources and whatnot

I'm in a long-term process of re-organizing how I access my saved basic sources, and checking/discarding if anything is dead or moved. Do you know about the Cornell University Making of America search page? I don't know if Cornell took it over from Univ of Michigan Making of America, but Cornell seems to have a better search page, IMO. You might want to change the hook a little. That claim was in 1946, and may not be accurate today. Also, that was according to Ripley's Believe It or Not! newspaper column as the sole source. I don't know where Wikipedia stands on Ripley as a reliable source. I find no Dorsetts in Hawaii. I DO however find a Mrs. J. M. Dowsett who was involved in Suffrage. [5] tracking that, I find John M.'s wife was Wilhelmina [6] which led to this Wilhelmina Kekelaokalaninui Dowsett [1861-1929] [7] Her father was Hermann A. Megalibrarygirl Okay, I circled back to this. I am fairly certain the the references calling this woman Dorsett are mistaken. I have checked variant spellings on Dorset, Dorsett, Dorsette, Darset, Dorcet, etc. and find no one with any such name who was not a British or Canadian tourist in the islands this early (1910-1920). On the other hand, the Dowsetts were quite prominent and her family was Hawaiian royalty. M vs. W is not a big issue either as handwriting is often confused. (I once found historical records for James Parrack indexed under Jame Sperrick, thus, a rule of thumb is to always search for variant spellings. In periods where illiteracy was high, people wrote things as they thought they heard them.) If you determine that Dowsett is who you need, marriage and birth information is here. [11] I found her obit, but it is a extra subscription clip from Newspapers.com. There are all sorts of clippings that are available about her, but I wasn't sure if you need them or have access to them. SusunW (talk) 22:25, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

@Megalibrarygirl and SusunW: Drilling down a little on this, with what KAVEBEAR originally posted on my talk page here. This mentions more than one Dorsett. pp. 716 717, 883 refer to Mrs. John W. Dorsett as being associated with "work in Hawaii" and "the highest social circles in the islands", and "...the women of Honolulu in 1912, when they called on Mrs. John W. Dorsett to help them organize a suffrage club ". The other Dorsett. pp. 323 is actually Martha Angle Dorsett of Minneapolis in 1919, and probably not related to this. Men of Hawaii 1917 does not have the name Dorsett. But it does have David Aikanaka Dowsett, a real estate broker, on p. 93. Base on her family's position and all the little clues in the History of Woman Suffrage source about high born Hawaiian ladies being involved. I am planning to create an article for her and the other well known suffragettes. Sorry Kavebear, I don't have an extra subscription. Not sure how it works or even whether I could obtain one (Its complicated. I live in one country and bank in another one). Somewhere on here is a page where you can ask for others who have a subscription if they can help with the info, but I don't know where that page is. The paper which has the notice is Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Honolulu, Hawaii, Thursday, December 12, 1929, p 29 and the part I can read says Wilhelmina Dowsett died Tuesday, which would make it December 10, 1929 SusunW (talk) 15:00, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Gynberg Ballads

I am closing your 13 May resource request for Gynberg Ballads as stale because in three months no one has been able to fulfill it.

The holders of four of the five extant copies explicitly prohibit your request. Official reasons range from restrictions under which the item was gifted to the physical condition of the item. Also, most special collections departments are forced to act as profit centers. If they release an image that anyone can access for free, then they can no longer charge individual researchers for access.

The sole exception is University of Michigan. I've requested that they digitize their copy. Whether they actually do so is at the discretion of the relevant special collections curator. If they do, it will be according to their own specifications and timeline (usually 2-3 months). Bishop Museum sources

You might already know about this. While searching through the HathiTrust, I found Memoirs of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History (multiple volumes 1899-several decades). Depending on what you're interested in, I was just browsing and found Vol VI is the Abraham Fornander collection of Hawaiian antiquities and folklore. There folklore in both Hawaiian language and the English translation. I've think I've seen those before at one point. I remember with writing biographies on ancient Hawaiian alii early in my Wikipedia editing days since the line between folklore and history is vague. Generally my interest time frame is from the conquest to the early 1900s. Btw do you know how I can upgrade my newspaper.com subscription through the Wikipedia library to the plus version. I'm still only subscribed to the regular. I submit a request to change it on November 16 but haven't heard anything back from them...Wait. Actually all my subscriptions expired. The "publishers extra" is not an upgrade, but the normal Wikipedia subscription. I had trouble with my renewals on everything once they made the changeover. Ephraim Weston Clark

If you wander back this way, Ephraim Weston Clark. Trying to find enough pieces to get a basic article on this Kawaihao Church minister. Frustrating. He seems to have arrived in Hawaii before English language newspapers were interested in him personally. The best coverage on him at "Autobiographical Notes of Ephraim W. Clark". The Friend. 91: 82–83, 85. April 1922. was something he wrote himself. Fascinating stuff, but I can't use it because it's technically OR. Oldest living Hawaiian woman

Just an FYI. I think you're the one who left the redlink at WIP missing Oceana articles, about Mary Maihiai, (1883-1912/13) alleged Hawaiian centenarian. I thought of that just now when I was searching through available sources for William Kamau, the Kahu who came after Akaiko Akana at Kawaiahaʻo. The information in the newspaper came from William Kamau.This woman's name is Kaahaina Naihe. It says she might have even been 118 years old. Sammy Amalu

In trying to find sources on when Rev. Edward Kahale (Kawaiahao) died, I ran across a newspaper item about his officiating at Sammy Amalu's 4th marriage. Then I found you'd done the article on his ancestor Miriam Auhea Kekāuluohi Crowningburg. If you're collecting sourcing on Amalu, here's one:

Missing stone at Kailua-Kona?

Found while researching A Akaka, when he was pastor at a church in Hilo. One of his dedication ceremonies at the new Kona Palms, a small 38-room hotel. In the image, he's touching, " ... the old stone of King Kamehameha I and Queen Kaahamanu residence still at the site". Also mentions Liholiho spent a lot of time at that house. Kamakahonu or maybe Hulihe'e Palace? What happened to that stone?

A web search says it was "probably was next to the Mokuaikaua Church". It might have been sold by Thurston and fallen to the 1960s-1970s resort construction boom. It is most likely not Hulihee which was the house of Governor Kuakini and wasn't built in Kamehameha I's lifetime. A good source to look into may be "Palaces and Forts of the Hawaiian Kingdom: From Thatch to American Florentine". Also, you have not mentioned it specifically, but I am assuming Peabody never married or had children? This might be worth mentioning-perhaps in the second sentence of the final paragraph mentioning he date of death.

Tip of the day

Use or not, as you would. I use tabs on my Wikipedia pages, so this is the only way I know to tell you this. Sometimes on reviews, FAC for instance, somebody will make a comment about using an en dash instead of an em dash, etc. I downloaded a script to my commons.js years ago (more info can be found at User talk:GregU/dashes.js)

Sci-Hub

If no one fulfills your RX request on Pa'u riding, you might use Sci-Hub. An RX editor recommended it to me. It bypasses paywalls so it's semi-legal; I find it useful occasionally for Wikipedia research/citations when I'm in a hurry or no one has fulfilled my RX request. Just input the DOI number and it should bring up the document. Sometimes you have to check around to see which Sci-Hub domain is actually working -- they get shut down and such. Thanks. I have since corrected that. The problem is that Gulick's term as acting finance minister seem to be due to a brief absence of Kapnea from the islands in 1885. We still need a source stating when this acting term ended because Kapena was still finance minister until June of 1886.KAVEBEAR (talk) 05:28, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

The same page shows J. M. Kapena starting on February 13, 1883, C. T. Gulick starting as acting on September 1, 1885, & P. P. Kanoa starting on June 30, 1886. Keanolani

I do have one question. According to the article, Moses was expelled from the school, and this is evidence that Lot is the father. I'm not sure I see the connection. I would think that if Moses had been the father, it would lead to his expulsion. Could Lot have been the one to be expelled? Tdslk (talk) 22:24, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

This is what the source states. Lot did not get in trouble for the affair. Moses was expelled for visiting Queen Kalama in the night, another incident on its own. These two students Moses and Abigail seem to have only left when there were no feasible way to cover it up.KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:53, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

I notice you changed family "was" to family "were". Family is a singular collective noun so "was" is correct. "Were" is sometime used in British English. https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/grammar/matching-verbs-to-collective-nouns Since this article is not written in British English, you might want to consider restoring my correction to "was". We had the same disagreement in the article on Liliuokalani. Family should be used as plural here since using was will change the next part of the sentence, which you left out, “were collateral relations”. From what I’ve seen online, it seems using the collective family as a plural or singular noun depends on how natural it sounds. Changing it to “was collateral relations“ is bad. No concerns, I just added stuff after you started editing. He admired Prussian military style (19th century Prussia was known for its effective military) and tried to create an active military in Hawaii in his reign. I believe that I can present evidence that there is a distinction that needs recognition between the term "Hawaiian Kingdom" and "Kingdom of Hawaii". They are not synonyms. I propose we discuss it since you object to the changes. The summary of the argument is that the "Kingdom of Hawai'i" would apply until unification after that the almost uniform reference made by the government itself as "Hawaiian Kingdom" not "Kingdom of Hawaii", as evidenced in official documents, including 1852 Constitution Title 1864 Constitution Art. 47 73 76

I have found no instance of it systematically calling itself the "Kingdom of Hawaii"

This is just a sample. I assume we share an interest in factual accuracy. And the "Kingdom of Hawaii" is, in my opinion, inaccurate even if used and it needs if not "retirement" an explanation that it isn't a synonym.

If one searches on the term "Supreme Court of the Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands" one gets returns to the official court reports. So the executive branch refers to the country as the "Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands" as does the judicial branch. That an error is widespread seems no argument for not correcting it.

It’s not about official nomenclature but consistency. Changing the name requires more consensus at the moment and changing two articles is not addressing the problem and can be viewed as disruptive. The second link you provided is literally a fake book of an old Wikipedia category I created showing I had issues with consistency then. Discuss this on Talk:Kingdom of Hawaii and get consensus for the change to Hawaiian Kingdom if that is a route but I like to look at the historiography of the term beyond 1893 since there was no need to distinguish the monarchy and other subsequent governments: PC, Republic, Territory and the State before 1893.
