Margaret Sheridan (writer) defaultsort[edit]

Hallo Rich, Were you using some sort of automation to create this stub with its dodgy {{DEFAULTSORT:(writer), Margaret Sheridan}}? If so, something needs to be tweaked to avoid sorting on bracketed disambiguators. I've mended this one. PamD 22:32, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata weekly summary #229[edit]

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Worked more on making it possible to use Wikidata items and properties to make statements about multimedia files on Commons in the future
    • Adding a list of items used in an article to the edit page on Wikipedia and co (phabricator:T144921)
    • More work on automated language links for Wiktionary (phabricator:T145412)
    • Improve the way to count and display the number of items on the main page (phabricator:T144687)
    • Solved a bug on the gadget DuplicateReferences (phabricator:T146318)
    • Clicking on the desired property while adding a new Statement didn't focus the value input. That has been fixed (phabricator:T144037).
    • Made it possible to use the bzr and cvs protocols in URL data types (phabricator:T146692)

automated mass creation[edit]

Generally some source or sources of data is used to create many pages. It is a far from simple task, and often attracts a lot of controversy, especially in article space and if "mass" is more than a dozen or so pages. Do you have a particular project in mind?

I don't recommend it anymore, in fact I'm about to run a contest to expand stubs! But there's certainly an argument for an intelligently thought out bot creating articles on things like African villages. Ask Aymatth2 on that, he's currently trying to get something coded.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:07, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Saadkhan12345: There is no bot that takes something like a list of names and dates and generates one article per name. You would have to write a software program to do that, which is not easy, then get permission at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval. As User:Rich Farmbrough says, mass-creation often attracts a lot of controversy and a lot of editors question the value of short stubs. Aymatth2 (talk) 11:07, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well, yes. You can do the page creation with AWB, for example. Another example is AnomieBot which creates pages such as Category:Wikipedia articles needing clarification from July 2016. (Admittedly this is simple, as the content is generated by template.)

  • Development
    • The property talk namespace now has subpages enabled (phabricator:T146271)
    • More work on automated sitelinks for Wiktionary (phabricator:T987)
    • More work on federation for Commons in order to be able to use Wikidata's items and properties there (phabricator:T76007)
    • Adding entity usage information in action=edit on Wikipedia and co (phabricator:T144921)
    • Working on making it possible to get formatted values back on the client. With this we will for example link the value to a Wikipedia article where possible. (phabricator:T142940)

Help needed regarding AWB[edit]

Hi, I use AWB with my main account as well as another Bot account "SM7Bot". Sometimes ago CheckPage was created on maiwiki mai:विकिपिडिया:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage and when I requested both my accounts are added there. But still, I am unable to use it. Now, I created a check page on bhwiki (where I am an Admin) bh:विकिपीडिया:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage and added my bot account there. But I am unable to use it here too, while I am able to use AWB on hiwiki with the same bot account. I saw you answered some people on AWB bug page, and that's why I am requesting this help. TheLongTone[edit]

What really makes me mad is that its obvious TheLongTone knows nothing of the cases he nominates - he recently nominated Disappearance of Eloise Worledge, one of Australia's most famous crimes - he just has a grudge against Wikipedia covering disappearances and murders, calling it "guff". Wikidata celebrates its 4th anniversary on October 29th. Around this date, a lot of events will happen online and offline.

Birthday events

Editors all around the world organize meetups to celebrate the birthday. You can join one of them or create an event in your own town!

A lot of surprises, stories and presents will be shared between October 29th and November 4th. Check the project chat or the mailing-list every day to see what happens!

    • Fixed a rounding error in the geo coordinate formatter (see GitHub). Thanks, 0x686578!
    • Improvements to technical error messages, e.g. "illegal value" when editing a Commons media statement (phabricator:T141880).

Invitation from Wikipedia Asian Month 2016[edit]

Thanks for partipating Wikipedia Asian Month last year, and I hope you enjoy it. Last year, more than 7,000 articles contribute to Wikipedia in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month, making us one of the largest event on Wikipedia. We will organize this event again in upcoming November, and would like to invite you join us again.

This year, we are lowering down the standards that you only need to create 4 (Four) articles to receive a postcard (new design), and articles only need to be more than 3,000 bytes and 300 words. We are also improving our postcard sending process, e.g. making the postcards right now, and collecting the address after the event ends without waiting other languges.

Wikipedians who create the most articles on each Wikipedia will be honored as "Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors". We will send you both digital copy, and a paper copy of the Ambassador certificate.

So I've been trying to reduce the amount of pages in the living and listas backlogs for the past couple of days, and I'm really beginning to appreciate just how big 7000+ items can be. I decided to look at the talk pages for both, and saw your post on the listas backlog talk page.
