Farthings[edit]

Reading through that document I also see it quite casually refers to Bath as a borough of Wiltshire at the time of the Domesday Book. Hmmmmm.  :) Morwen - Talk 15:46, 10 Jul 2004 (UTC)

SEP[edit]

Regarding the SEP entry, I acknowledge that perhaps I bent the stick a little in the other direction, however the way the entry now stands hardly conforms to NPOV and in some cases is simply wrong.

The split of the Spartacists and the Workers League from the SWP is complicated, and the issues that developed in the course of the differences between the two branches of the opposition to the SWP are not dealt with in an objective manner. As it stands, it really says nothing about the issues, and implies that the group under the leadership of Wohlforth engaged in an unprincipled split with Robertson.

The whole section on the nature of the Workers League in the 1960s and the basis of its recruitment is simply an unsubstantiated slander. The way it deals with the departure of Wohlforth is similarly biased against the Workers League. Neither Healy nor the members of the Workers League ever declared that Wohlforth and Fields were CIA agents. What was at issue was the failure of Fields to reveal the connections of her family with the state. There were _political_ issues in the split that are not even hinted at in the entry, and one would get the impression that Healy was in the habit of going around accusing people of being in the CIA who he didn't like and that this is how the party operated.

The last paragraph is simply factually wrong. The breakdown of the WRP occurred in 1984-85. The Workers League was renamed the SEP in 1995, a decade later.

If the entry is to be NPOV its should _really_ be NPOV, and not constitute a slander against the WL/SEP. If it cannot give an evaluation of the history, then a barebones account of the historical development is preferable to a negative evaluation.

80.255[edit]

User: 80.255 is back and seems to be determined to ignore the county naming policy that was agreed at Wikipedia: Naming conventions (places). He has been making unnaceptable edits at Shipston-on-Stour by claiming it is in Worcestershire. He is also claiming that what he is doing is acceptable by policy, which it blatantly isn't. All my changes are explained in detail, with supporting excerpts from official policy. G-man cannot defend his changes. G-man refuses to discuss his changes in a sensible and logical way, and obviously would prefer to try and start an edit war. Until G-Man can defend his changes, in talk (as I have been doing) and counter my argument in a coherent manner (without calling them "unacceptable edits" but offering absolutely no explanation), and I shall continue to consider his reverts unacceptable and shall continue to revert his changes, all of which are explained in detail and all of which are both acceptable to policy and consistent with other articles which have been accepted as being within policy. 80.255 15:24, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Towns in...[edit]

I note you're conducting the admirable task of adding towns to Category:Towns in... (wherever). Keep it up. Just a couple of points of feedback: is it possible to keep the county categories as well as having the 'towns in' category or have you already accounted for this? Also Bletchley, Milton Keynes is, as the name suggests, in Milton Keynes and not in Buckinghamshire. Just something to watch in future! -- Graham ☺ | Talk 18:38, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I have some concerns about this exercise. Given that the number of towns in any given county is much smaller that the number of other types of places (villages/places of interest/whatever) the net result of moving the towns from Category:...shire to Category:Towns in ...shire is going to be to tend to hide them. People are going to look in Category:...shire and not find the place, and think it isn't there. I guess we could resolve this by having eg. Category:Villages in ...shire etc., but is a taxononmy of whether a place is a village or a town really that critical to people browsing places. Or we could have the town in both Category:...shire and Category:Towns in ...shire, but that is contrary to the advice on setting up Categories. If you want to see an example of this in a county which has a reasonable (and increasing) number of village articles, see Category:Wiltshire -- Chris j wood 17:19, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Counties policy[edit]

I was thinking of adding an explanitory note to the counties policy, along the lines of what I've left at 80.255's talk page to explain why the policy is not contradictory. I was also thinking of making it clearer that ceremonial counties can be used for geography when a place is a unitary authority. Would you object to this? G-Man 18:58, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I wasn't thinking of changing the policy so much, just explaining it better, I'm not sure that a vote would be neccesary for that. I feel that the way Morwen wrote the policy is somewhat confusing, and 80.255 is exploiting that. I shall see what Angela thinks seem as she seems to be the gaffer round ere. Broken links - plurals[edit]

Great work on these reports! How about a report finding red links ending in "s", where an article or redirect exists for the singular? User:Daniel_Quinlan/redirects does this, but it is woefully out-of-date and doesn't appear to have the code he used. Warofdreams 10:23, 20 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • Sure thing - I've placed a first stab at such a report in User:Topbanana/Reports/This page contains a red link that may be due to a plural discrepancy. A check for simple plurals only (the addition or removal of a single 's' at the end of an article title or link) yielded almost 7000 suggested corrections so I didn't attempt anything fancier. I was helping you out with your category thing by starting at the other end. Just wondering do we put the "Towns in" category on city articles?. Paddock Wood[edit]

Am I doing this correctly - first time I've contributed to a talk? I have just added some info from my reference books about the railways at Paddock Wood, and notice you have reversed my previous appellation of 'village'. Surely Paddock Wood hasn't a TOWN council? http://www.historic-kent.co.uk/vill_p.htm certainly talks about it being in a transition stage between town and village; but Statutory Instrument 2001 No 3559 [!] certainly still calls it a parish [ see http://www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2001/20013559.htm ]. Longfield, close to where I live is in a similar position: to all intents a small town, but still only a village. But perhaps there is a Wikipedia rule somewhere ... [Peter Shearan}

Isle of Grain[edit]

The history of this article's writing is getting a little silly and I am as guilty I think, since it would have been better to have discussed the whole thing BEFORE we both keep chopping and changing it. The information I added - and which you have now deleted - was, to my mind, factual, historical information taken from an historical source (the 1801 map). Is it not still valid to have it in - perhaps given the section a heading: History of the island maybe? It does not as now written, point out that at the beginning that the whole place was simply marshland (yes you do say it later, but this is scene-setting stuff, isn't it?). And you are still persisting with the completely wrong geographical fact that an island is a peninsula ... and that a village is an island!!

There is also no mention that the place has been occupied since at least Roman times - the church has Roman tiling built into its fabric and was part of a nunnery.

The idea that Port Victoria was built as an alternative to Tilbury is completely wrong. I have an article in front of me (in Railway Magazine March 1933) which gives the true reason for its opening. I quote (the italics are mine):

" In the late 1870's the South Eastern Railway decided to promote a line through the (Hoo) district, with a view to competing for the traffic from London to Sheerness, formerly an almost unchallenged stronghold of the London, Chatham and Dover Railway. For some years past a steamer had been running from Sheerness to Strood, whence South Eastern trains gave a connection to London. ... the journey was of some length, along the rather tortuous course of the Medway. In 1879 the South Eastern obtained an Act for a branch leaving their North Kent line at a point about (3.5 miles) from Gravesend ... to Stoke ... In the following year powers were obtained for an extension, (3.5 miles) long, to St James, in the Isle of Grain, where a deep-water pier was to be built on the Medway. A ferry was to connect the new pier with Sheerness ..."

I quoted that at some length since it once again shows that what is now Grain village was, like many others on Hoo Peninsula, called after the name of their parish church - thus Allhallows (All Saints), Hoo St Mary, and so on. The railway was opened throughout on September 11 1882. The pier was built for passenger traffic and indeed Queen Victoria was a passenger! In his book (The Kent Village Book 1999) Alan Bignell says that she "... took a rather curious fancy to Grain as a chosen departure point for trips to Germany" and that Port Victoria (named for her after all!) "was built essentially as a railway station at the end of a line from Windsor"!! So competition with Tilbury - then a freight-only dock - wasn't the case.

Almost finished! There seem to be rather a lot of unwritten references - eg the names of the marshes; container port (there is a reference under Port to containers; and many others. Surely they don't all need referencing? Stoke Marshes and Stoke itself are so insignificant that they can just be included in this article.
