Since you're involved in editing SDF-related articles, I thought I'd let you know that I have access to all the issues of Justice from 1896 to 1902, plus several other SDF documents (letters, pamphlets, election manifestoes, etc.) from around that time period. Roger Protz in Peter Taaffe article[edit]
Hi Thought I would ask your opinion on an issue in the article on Peter Taaffe, as it relates to something I think you posted there, ref Roger Protz, before I proceed to perhaps post something on the Taaffe entry dicussion page or on the article.
If you're not bothered and want me to just go straight there, or do the edit, that's fine.
On the first issue of the Militant, above the editorial, it says

The minutes of the meeting of the RSL which agreed to set up the Militant, as outlined below, are available in Militant's archives.
I would like to suggest something along the lines of the following text:
Current article has
Taaffe joined what was then the Revolutionary Socialist League, led by Ted Grant, in the early 1960s and became the second editor (after Roger Protz) of its publication, Militant when it was launched in 1964. Eventually, the group became known by the name of the paper, and was either referred to as Militant or the Militant Tendency.
Replace with:
Taaffe joined what was then the Revolutionary Socialist League (RSL), led by Ted Grant, in the early 1960s. In 1964 Grant, Arthur and Jimmy Dean, Keith Dickenson, and others on the executive of the RSL decided to launch the Militant newspaper.
Peter Taaffe, who lived in Liverpool at that time, was appointed editor, Roger Protz, who lived in London where the paper was to be produced, and who had experience working on a magazine, was appointed technical editor. A business editor and sub editors were appointed. Taaffe's task was to change the whole approach of this small group towards the working class. At that time Trotskyists and Communists tended to speak in an idium which was quite inaccessible to ordinary workers. Taaffe's task was to speak in the language of the "Labour and trade union movement".
In 1965 Taaffe moved to London to work full time on the Militant, despite a serious shortage of money: “I was compelled first of all to sleep on the floor of a supporter in Balham.. . once or twice spending sleepless nights in the entrances of subways” (The Rise Of Militant, p11)
Eventually, the group became known by the name of the paper, and was either referred to as Militant or the Militant Tendency.

I wonder what you think? This is a sketch, anyway, of an entry. I could substantiate the matter a little further I believe.
Perhaps you saw a reference which said, "Taaffe only moved down to London in 1965, Protz edited the Militant before that". This would be half right, insofar as Protz was the technical editor, but it is misleading. Taaffe was appointed editor at the start, because of his work in Liverpool, and it was indeed essentially Taaffe's project, his goal.
Just FYI, it was always said that Ted Grant, who never liked the name Militant for the paper, only reluctantly acquiessed in the whole project. "Militant" was Taaffe's choice, and the Liverpool lads on the RSL exec, Arthur and Jimmy Dean in particular, and Keith Dickenson, won the day. Grant favoured "Socialist Appeal."
Anyway, if you have any opinions on the matter, please let me know. Someone tells me Roger Protz was employed working on a magazine called New Society at the time, (a bourgois liberal publication) which later merged with the New Statesman, but I can't back that up. Perhaps you have some info on this?

Taaffe, Protz, clean-up?[edit]

Do you think we have done enough to effect a clean-up?
In the Taaffe discussion I've suggested a draft of other material to help the "clean up" along the lines of the discussion - more references to Taaffe and achievements, to place in perspective the open turn split. I hope strictly NPOV stuff.
I wonder what you think? I don't think the original indicated in the slightest the historical legacy which is associated with the Militant, of which some mention, if only breif, is necessary in a biography of its founder and long time editor. But probably could do with much improvement.
You menion the Roger Protz entry but it says "Founding editior of the Militant". Maybe insert "technical" or perhaps "alongside Peter Taaffe" Not vital.

Hi! In the party affiliations of the above constituency page, I introduced "Anti-Parnellite Nationalist" from 1890. You've changed it to INF. Whilst the point is a trivial one, as both designations can be considered correct, he was Anti-Parnellite from 1890, but he was INF from 1891, to be strictly accurate we'd need to introduce a row for December 1890 - March 1891 which seems like overkill when one row will do. The dot after 'st.'[edit]
Hi, it's a interesting point you brought up about the dot after abbreviations of saints in moving Old St Paul's Cathedral. Is there a suggested format in the manual of style? It doesn't seem very clear at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (abbreviations) at the moment. The only thing I'm a bit unsure about is that I notice other buildings include the dot, such as St. Peter's Basilica and other ones listed at St. Peter's Cathedral and Cathedral of Saint Paul don't seem to be very consistant. Taaffe page[edit]
Hi, Wow! The foot notes and contents are really neat. Thanks for all that work.
Well, the citations are quite a challenge, but I really appreciate the time you've taken on it, and I think you are quite right in identifying the weaknesses of the material.
I’ve made a start on the citations, and it’s made a big improvement. You just don’t see these things yourself.
Some notes:
1. Question: I put a smaller version of the peter Taaffe picture because it took ages to download. I know wikimedia say use a high, print quality version, but I thought maybe it was unnecessarily high. What do you think? I don’t mind either way – change it back or I will if it was wrong. Let me know.
2. Proposal: I think Matgamna’s main point is on the look of the paper, e.g. precisely on the technical side, (meaning layout) which Taaffe could not remotely match after Protz left. In other words he was doing what he was supposed to, and his leaving left Taaffe in the lurch.
Would you be happy with:
According to Sean Matgamna’s highly critical recollections (Matgamna was an RSL member at the time), Protz did most of the work on the first three or four issues. But he left the RSL the following year (1965), and Taaffe moved down to London to become National Secretary of the RSL and work full time on the Militant. [3]
and just as an afterthought, is not the whole thing more of a footnote type of thing?
3. Just to be clear: I'm sure you agree that since Taaffe was/is editor / general secretary of the Militant / Socialist Party, then the success of that paper / tendency / party is immediately relevant, since one might say it is his life's work, and whilst not every factoid is going to be directly tied to Taaffe, I'm sure we will arrive at an agreement on the question of balance here.
4. You haven't indicated that any citations were needed in the piece I placed in the discussion, so after waiting a little longer for any feed back I'll paste that into the biog, and hopefully the whole thing will seem a bit more balanced and relevant.
5. (Off the record, as it were:: In case you’re interested: Of course Taaffe always had specific responsibility for Liverpool on the Militant executive, and played a central role in policy decisions in Scotland in 1988 which I hint at with one instance, and though I could not / did not source it he was central to discussions in Scotland with Tommy Sheridan, about forming "Anti-Poll Tax unions" (i.e prior to the decision to support non-payment – the other option was the SWP / CP option of staying within the law and getting the trade unions to take action. The Scottish SWPers, I am told, paid their poll taxes.) which were another break with the Labour Party and the direction the Grantites wanted to go (deeper entryism - some of whom by this time were becoming bitter and twisted, but again, that's another story.) Taaffe was all the time in the lead in pulling or guiding the other leading Militant executive (‘Editorial board’) members in this direction, against an increasingly embittered Grant / Woods group.) taaffe page - thanks[edit]
Hi, Again I'm grateful for your comments, and entirely agree. Added more biog and made minor changes to emphasise Taaffe. Don't know if I can push it any further. I hope on balance now the reader will now feel s/he is reading an interesting biography of an individual, with background info. I've also made further clean up efforts, and removed the clean up tag - I hope that was ok.
I have stuff on the period of the growth of Militant in the 60s and 70s which maybe I'll suggest for the Militant Tendency page, which needs some attention anyway.
I am thinking of starting on the Militant Tendency page the same citation treatment required. The Ted Grant page has errors (I've pointed out the worst on the discussion page) but I'm reluctant to jump in and make the agreed changes.

Globalization[edit]
You know, I almost put the globalize template on Historic district myself, but thought better of it because I figured if it made it to the front page in DYK?, probably likely, it would be expanded, which is why I left the intro purposely ambiguous and then sectioned it off into 'Historic districts in the United States' and its sub sections. But you're right it might just be too broad of a topic and there is justification for articles such as Historic districts in the United States, Historic Districts in the United Kingdom, Historic districts in Austria, etc. though that is quite an undertaking. Not that I mind the globalize template or anything, I hope someone expands it, I just wanted to explain my rationale, one editor to another. Another alternative would having the overview article , Historic district, be done in summary style and then having those articles above as child articles or whatever.

You reverted my contributions to the Trotskyism template. Why?[edit]
All my contributions were entirely legitimate, except possibly C.L.R. James, which is debatable. (It is alleged that his most important intellectual contributions were after he left the Trotskyist movement, but this ignores the important contribution to Trotskyism he made when, as a member of the SWP and with Trotsky, he helped to develop the position on Black self-determination.) The ArchitectureSearchResult test seemed to deliver very good results, with more than about 90% of the articles being worthy. Do you think it's a good idea to have the results sent to another page? Then an editor can pick and choose the good articles to be added manually to the New article announcements. Can the "rules" eliminate redlinks and redirects with this useful tool? Browser Questions.[edit]
I have a couple of questions. Whenever a user is sysopped, do they have to clear their browser cache? I'm asking because I know that whenever a monobook change is done, the cache has to be cleared for the changes to take effect. Did you, when you were given bureaucrat rights, have to clear cache at all for the changes? I know I don't have to worry about any of this now, but I'm just curious.
