Template:UKrailwaystations[edit]

I'm not thrilled by the addition of the major stations to what was quite a slim template directing users back to the list of UJ railway stations. Would you reconsider, or justify. (Why Cardiff and not Nottingham? Why none of the London stations ... users who wnt these stations could use the A-Z to find the station easily enough. For the majority of station pages on whch the template is used, the major station are probably of little interest...oh, and since it also serves as the index on each UK railway stations - X page, it does not IMO enhance each of these pages, merely pushes the payload further down the screen :(). thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

Revolt of the Earls[edit]

I had originally called it just "Revolt of the Earls" but then found other historical events that also use that terminology (these are all loose terms anyway, there is no "official" name) -- so I called it "Revolt of the Earls 1075" because 1) it would avoid disambiguation with other similar events and 2) it is clear in the title what it is referring too. It is the same problem with Siege of Jerusalem (1099) --Stbalbach 18:43, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

7th century Gospel Book fragment (British Library, Add. MS 5111)[edit]

Hi, you recently renamed 7th century Gospel Book fragment (British Library, Add. MS 5111). I have since found that the fragment in question has a name and renamed the article , again. However the listing of the article on VfD for having an "ugly" name has prompted me to write a proposal for a naming convention for articles about manuscripts without names. Wikipedia, commas, and AE vs BE[edit]

I support avoiding US-centric spelling, etc.--I've been thinking of requesting a move of theater to theatre, and agree that both are welcome on Wikipedia, as I added to the tutorial[1]. However, I am not aware of serial commas being an AE vs BE issue--in fact, most US newpapers omit it, following the AP style manual. I made the comma changes based on Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Commas (and my belief that it is clearer). (PS FWIW, I wasn't 'targeting' any user--most of my last 250 or so edits were from my working thru a list of 500 newpages, that I retrieved late Jan 9.) Niteowlneils 19:02, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the link. I thot I had read Serial comma, but don't remember seeing the argument about how it can sometimes cause ambiguity. Sometimes it really helps (like[2]). I can try to remember not to change it if I end up new articles you create again, but since it's in the WP MOS (and Serial comma says it's OK by Fowler's Modern English Usage, as well) I probably will mostly continue to change it, at least when I'm editing articles for other reasons. Geo-stubs[edit]

Hi Warofdreams, just a quick note that I've noticed one or two articles you've worked on turning up in Category:Geography stubs rather than in the subcategories that are better suited to them (eg Borden Island, which I moved to Category:Canada-place stubs). It's good to see you adding new articles and wikifying ones that are already there, but I'm busy trying to make the Geography stubs more usable by making sure that it's not so full as to be useless, so can you please use the subcategories where they exist? Islands[edit]

Regarding the removal of the current non-islands from List of islands of England, is there a case for these having been historical islands? re: Rest (music)[edit]

For non-4/2 time signatues, I have never seen anythign other than a semibreve rest being used. I agree that this isn't entirely consistent, so will look it up in the AB Guide to Music Theory when I get a chance. Tompw 17:03, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Parliamentary constituencies[edit]

Hi: Thanks for compacting the TOC at List of Parliamentary constituencies in the United Kingdom. I only learnt how to do this yesterday so I am pleased to see it done already. The addition of Combined English Universities is good but I am not convinced that separating out Historic Constituencies is easy to maintain; there are already historic constituencies embedded in the list. City naming[edit]

I noticed you've been creating a few pages for West African cities (or towns). I know there is no established convention, but I wonder if it would be less ambiguous if the article names could include the country (or at the very least, province). For instance, this proposal would move Koubiala, to Koubiala, Mali. Highest point in Jersey[edit]

Yes, the highest point in Jersey is Les Platons in the parish of Trinity (also location of TV transmission mast). As for the highest point in Guernsey, I'm not sure. The highest point in the bailiwick is in Sark, but the highest point in Guernsey itself is around 106m and I believe it's in Forest, but I'm not certain of the exact location. Sheffield Wards[edit]

Hi! Following your comments on my Sheffield template, you planted in my head the idea that it would be better if the districts of Sheffield were covered by 28 articles on the Sheffield wards. The wards have definite boundaries and so it is much easier to say what is within a ward, whereas the districts have quite fuzzy boundaries. Also most of the district articles are still red links, and those articles that do already exist are quite short (most are stubs). I think that focussing on a ward makes it much easier to write a structured and useful article. I have started an article for the Ecclesall ward (the area of Sheffield that I know best) to illustrate the idea. I have merged the contents of the Ecclesall, Millhouses, and Ringlinglow articles into this new article and I have redirected Millhouses and Ringinglow (I also created redirects for Bent's Green and Greystones). Because you originally created the Ecclesall article I have not yet redirected it but I propose to do that unless you object. As you seem to be the most prolific contributor to the Sheffield area articles I would be interested to know what you think of the proposal to replace all of the Sheffield district articles with ward articles.     • I agree—I have started creating ward articles, where districts have stubs I am merging the content of the stub into the relevant ward article and redirecting. If however I come across a more substantial article (like Sharrow) I will leave the existing article and just have a short paragraph and a link on the ward page. Likewise, if any of the district sections in the new ward articles get larger than a couple of paragraphs I will split them off into their own articles. Bearing this in mind I am probably going to reinstate the Millhouses article that I had redirected to Ecclesall ward. Rests, note values[edit]

Before you make any more changes to Rest (music), I want to alert you that I'm considering redirecting Multiple measure rest to Rest (music), and all the pages for crotchet, quaver, crotchet rest, and so on to Note value. Before I do this, of course I plan to merge the relevant information, and that's what I did with Multiple measure rest; but now you've removed that info again, or at least that's what your edit summary said. I'm happy to gather opinions on this before I do it. My view is that the individual note (or rest) values can only be understood in relation to one another, and there isn't much to say individually about them; the info in the stub pages is a lot of duplication. —Wahoofive | Talk 16:16, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Is it really necessary to put that old junk about "four measure rest" into the Rest (music) article? A Google search on "four measure rest" only brings up 23 results, half of which are Wikipedia mirrors and most of the rest are in contexts meaning "four measures of rest." I've never heard this term, much less as a rest of indefinite length as the text describes. Can you provide a reference? Hi. I'm writing this to you as you seem to have made a lot of edits to this article. Apologies if what I have to say doesn't interest you. I have an issue with this article, and a similar problem with Benbecula, and I'm interested in your view. User:GordonMireson seems to have appeared for one day in 2004 and added a few Scottish island flags. Try as I might, I can't actually find these flags on the External Link page at flags of the world, and I believe the author of the webpage goes on to claim that these islands don't actually have flags. Sheffield United F.C[edit]

I don't know if it's the oldest but there certainly was a Plymouth United in existence in 1888 (and if my memory serves me right was formed before 1886), one year before Sheffield United F.C. were formed. [4] Bornintheguz 18:32, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, and the SUFC article should make this clear, but the claim refers to Sheffield United Cricket Club, its predecessor, who took their name in 1854 (and therefore it is the first sports club to be known as "United", not the first football team) - although earlier examples are very welcome! Category:2000 by month[edit]

I see that you've created Category:2000 by month. A similar category for 2001 was created by User:Docu and deleted recently. I believe this way of handling month articles makes the category system harder to use and adds no real advantage over the standard way of categorizing months in the first (*) section of the year category (see, for example, Category:2001). Re: Transfer to Wiktionary[edit]

If I'm snippy, it's because I do all the transwikis to Wiktionary, so I come across opposition a lot. But it's unfounded. There should be no stigma attached to transwikification. I transwikied Rape and Lathe because I looked at Wiktionary and saw they weren't there. So, now that I've transwikied them, what happened to the articles? Nothing. They're not gone, they're not merged and redirected, infact, the only difference is that I took the transwiki tag off. Perhaps if you're really worried about what happens to articles after transwiki, you should come to the Transwiki log and help me resolve the backlog according to the instructins given there. --Dmcdevit 22:55, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It presided over a society where only settlers and their descendants were citizens able to vote, and so represented them, often working in tandem with the Masonic Order. The party endorsed systems of forced labour and even sold human labour to other colonial powers. Despite this, the west saw them as a stabilising, unthreatening force and so invested heavily in the nation under William Tubman's leadership.

Is it really the case that the True Whig party -- created in 1878 -- "sold human labour to other colonial powers"? I was under the impression that the British navy had shut down the transatlantic slave trade decades earlier. Who were they selling to? French colonialists in Côte D'Ivoire?
