Thanks for the note. Weyes is not inconclusive; it's cleaely failed. It should never have gone for a second extention, because it only creates argumentation that taints the nomination all ways around. So whichever one of us gets to it first should remove it. Ethiopian towns[edit]

Wow, thanks for adding all of those missing cities in Ethiopia! It's a chore I've been trying to get to for a long while, but I've been hampered by problems on my side of the computer, like a lack of information. However, I have questions on a couple of these articles which may result in some major changes:

  • Hayk, Ethiopia -- Actually, AFAIK this is the name of a lake, in the middle of which is a famous monastery (see, for example, Takla Haymanot). I'm not aware of a city or town nearby.
  • Shire, Ethiopia -- This is actually the name of an ancient province, which is also spelled "Sire", "Syre", etc. Eventually there will be an article about this province, since it is important in Ethiopian history; any problem with moving this article to Inda Selassie?

1990s in HK[edit]

Just custom. In Hong Kong, everybody says "The 1990s" instead of simply "1990s". Therefore to conform the wikipedian custom (use British spelling and usage in Britain related articles, Aussie spelling and usage in Australian articles, similarly use Hong Kong-style wordings in Hong Kong related articles) the word the is put into the article series: The 1960s in Hong Kong, The 1970s in Hong Kong, The 1990s in Hong Kong. Extreme points of the United Kingdom[edit]

I can't find an explanation for your reversion in Extreme points of the United Kingdom but the article is now inconsistent. Different points are given for the extremes of Scotland (mainland) and Great Britian (mainland) and this is wrong. Hoyland Nether[edit]

Hi! I am writing this message to you because you have been one of the most prolific editors of articles about places in South Yorkshire. Yesterday I came across an article on Hoyland Nether (it linked to the Hallamshire article). The text of this article was a copy-paste from the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica and it seemed hopelessly out of date. However, when I tried to find Hoyland Nether on modern maps, the name was not there—in fact the only modern reference to Hoyland Nether that I have been able to find on google is a Hoyland Nether branch of the Barnsley library. It looks to me that what has happened is that a number of smaller hamlets have grown into the small town of Hoyland, and the name Hoyland Nether has fallen out of use. The 19th century OS maps not only show a hamlet called Nether Hoyland, but also use that name for a wider district—it looks like this was a township in the parish of Wath-upon-Dearne (I am assuming that Nether Hoyland and Hoyland Nether are the same place).

My local knowledge runs out pretty quickly to the north of Sheffield, and, as I currently live in the US, I cannot find out more than google will tell me. I have, however, tried to update the article, and I was wondering if you have sufficient knowledge of this area (or know of someone that does) to check that what I have written is correct.

Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard[edit]

I have created a new project page at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard, and Secretondon suggested that I tell my fellow bureaucrats about it. It's designed as a forum where users with bureaucrat rights can discuss difficult situations, either beforehand (for advice about what to do) or after taking action (for review and feedback). It's similar to another page I created, which is starting to catch on (e.g., Jimbo used it this month): Wikipedia:account suspensions, which is not for 3RR or simple vandalism but for close calls and disputed blocks.

Sheffield Neepsend[edit]

I only discovered Neepsend constituency last week. I had been trying to make articles for former Sheffield MPs and I was researching Harry Morris (the little information that I found about him is currently in my sandbox). It is interesting to me that he won the 1950 election and then resigned straight after, allowing a cabinet member who had lost his seat to stand in, and win a by-election. I suspect that it is not unrelated that he was given a peerage a few months later!
I am not sure why Neepsend appears to have been around so briefly, but it does look like the Rayment page is correct—it doesn't appear in the 1966 list of constituencies. I'm not sure what happened at this time, but I have been trying to piece together the comings and goings of the various Sheffield constituencies. Ecclesall and Central were abolished in 1950, with Heeley and Neepsend appearing to be the replacements. I don't know they decided to get rid of Neepsend so quickly, but I would like to find out.
The old election results come from this site, which at the moment goes back to 1951, but has been adding more elections periodically. JeremyA (talk) 16:42, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations on being made a bureaucrat! I thought you might like to know of a javascript tool that may help in your editing by giving easy access to many admin features. Election pages[edit]

Heloo War, I enjoy the work that you have done on the UK election pages. I have done a lot of similar work on Canadian election pages. One thing that I have been thinking about doing is adjusting party labels on the tables so that they are more meaningful to non-UK readers. Specifically, the party initialisms may be well-known in the UK (although I suspect that many Britons would stumble over the Northern Irish party initialisms), but they are largely meaningless to all but the most keen of foreign readers. So I propose to change SNP to "Scottish National", DUP to "Democratic Unionist", etc. I do not want to do this, however, without getting your input because of all of the work that you have done putting these tables together in the first place.   • Thanks for asking! - it sounds like a great idea to me. The only possible problems which come to mind are distinguishing between the Unionist Party of Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Unionist Party and between the Independent Labour Party and "Independent Labour" candidates. There are also a few groups such as the SDLP and UKIP with long-winded names who are almost always known by their acronyms. But even if we can't come up with shortish names to distinguish them, for the examples you gave and many similar ones, please go right ahead! Warofdreams talk 15:31, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • They are templates rather than metadata - you can find information on them at Template talk:Election box. The quickest way to edit one is to click to edit any page on which it is used. Two questions about Sheffield Hallam[edit]

Hi! I decided to update the results graph for Sheffield Hallam to include the 1950 results that you added. I took the new graph through Adobe Illustrator to get it anti-aliased but I can't decide whether I like it better or not. Could you compare Image:HallamGraph.png with Image:HillsboroughGraph.png to see what you think—I think that the actual image looks better, but the thumbnail on the constituency page looks worse. Secondly, in updating the graph I noticed that the percentages that you put in for 1950 don't add up to 100%—are we missing a party or are they incorrect? Leeds City station[edit]

Re your most recent change to Leeds City station, there is a daily (Mon-Sat) southbound service from Harrogate to London Kings Cross, calling at Horsforth (Mon-Fri only), Leeds, and points south (I know, I've been on it!). It leaves Harrogate at 0728 Mon-Fri and 0745 Sat. For some reason, there isn't a corresponding northbound service in the evening. This info can be found (i) on the GNER website (probably only in the Southbound timetable though), (ii) in the current National Rail Timetable (Table 35), and (iii) in the GNER timetable booklet. If you still don't believe me, try searching the National Rail website for direct Harrogate-London trains.

Also note that the daily Skipton-London service doesn't call at Shipley on the southbound journey, and runs non-stop between Leeds and Keighley.

Sheffield Central constituency[edit]

Thanks for your great work in filling out the past results for the Sheffield constituencies. I've been trying to use this data to draw a results graph for Central which includes results from both the old and the new constituencies. However, I am beginning to wonder if doing so will give a false sense of continuity, as it seems that the overlap between the area covered by the old Sheffield Central constituency and the current one may be small. From what I can gather, in 1950 the old Central mostly became Neepsend, and in 1983 new Central was created out of the former Park constituency. I am not sure though how much of old Central ended up in Heeley—the Heeley article states that its boundaries were significantly altered when Neepsend was abolished, but the Neepsend article states that the area that it covered is now in Hillsborough and new Central. As you (I think) wrote both of the above I was wondering if you had any opinion on how much the Central article should make it look like the new constituency is a revival of the old one as opposed to an entirely different constituency which happens to have the same name? Links and years[edit]

Thank you, War of Dreams. I'm a new user and so I was following what I read in the Manual of Style. This says that red links are not a good thing (up to a certain percentage), and that years standing alone should be treated like any other word and linked to only if of interest in relation to the article. I found the part of the Manual of Style that says years should not be linked. It says "If the date doesn't contain a day and a month, then date preferences won't work, and square brackets won't respond to your readers' auto-formatting preferences. So unless there is a special relevance of the date link, there's no need to link it. This is an important point: simple years, decades and centuries should only be linked if there's a strong reason for doing so. Re: Graphs[edit]

You're right... I swithered about whether or not to include the uncontested elections on the graphs and I decided that the ideal solution would be to have some the political affiliation of the 'winning' candidate without showing that candidate as having got 100% of the vote. In the absence of a good idea as to how to do this I eventually went with including the election as a 100% result. I'll redo them and add a note in the description stating the years that candidates won unopposed. Good questions. I asked my wife if she could work out the significance of the background colours and she couldn't, so no, it is not immediately obvious what they refer to (I can add that to the image description). The line colours were chosen to as close as possible match the colours used in the election box templates, so I am reluctant (but not 100% opposed) to change them. I've already tried a few iterations with the yellow background--it's a question of getting the balance between being able to see the yellow line and the background actually looking yellow and not off-white. Do you use Mac or PC?--I'm making this on a Mac so it will be good if you are on a PC because sometimes the colours can look slightly different. Hmm, Belfast West would be challenging--I think I'll stick to the English constituencies for now (mostly three-party). The older constituencies are also going to be a challenge as many had multiple MPs. Hi! Just a couple of small things I notced whilst making the election results graphs: Could you double-check the Sheffield Central 1923 election--I think that there might be a candidate missing. Also, I noticed that the results of the two 1910 elections in Ecclesall appear to be the same. That might be correct, but I just wanted to be sure. Fourth International[edit]

Lambert was pretty clear that the FI was dead in 1966: they always write of reconstruction. So the organisation is the 'Quatrième Internationale (Centre International de Reconstruction)', or sometimes the "L'Entente Internationale des Travailleurs et des Peuples"

I think you might have a point about the ICFI. The ICFI called itself the political continuity of the FI in the 1960s, rather than the FI, biut I had assumed that they were less modest - perhaps unfairly. WSWS now saws "The International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI) is the leadership of the world socialist movement, the Fourth International founded by Leon Trotsky in 1938."

I am suitably impressed with your list of hundreds of England. You commented (although not to me), in connection with the List of hundreds in Dorset, how the titles were done. I did it the way I did because some of the hundreds share names with extant villages, in which case they obviously need to be differentiated as x (hundred), but others have unique names which refer, AFAIK, to nothing else and it was unnecessary to disambiguate them, there being nothing else with which they could be confused, so x hundred seemed preferable, all the more so as that is how they are invariably referred to. Request for page move[edit]

Could you please move Opposition to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War to Opposition to the Vietnam War. I can't do it as the latter page already exists as a re-direct to the former. The reason for the move is that the article covers general opposition to the war rather then just US involvment, furthe it would put the page inline with Protests against the Vietnam War and Opposition to the 2003 Iraq War/Protests against the Iraq war. Multiple merges[edit]

Is it appropreate to put multiple merge tags on a page? I ask because I think that the Post-September 11 anti-war movement page is writtern in a POV editorial orriginal reasearch fasion. I belive that this partly steams from the title which sets the article up to present an editorialised content.
