Recent software changes

  • A Lua function to use Wikidata has changed. You need to update the pages that use it. [1]
  • You can use the Content Translation tool on Wikipedia in Uzbek and Minangkabau. You need to enable it in your Beta options.
  • You can now hide banners if you don't have an account. [2] [3]

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 25. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from March 3. It will be on all Wikipedias from March 4 (calendar).
  • You can use the Content Translation tool on Wikipedia in Punjabi and Kyrgyz. You can ask for the tool in other languages.
  • Editing the fake blank line in VisualEditor is now simpler. This change also fixed a few bugs. [4] [5] [6] [7]
  • The TemplateData editor now warns you if a related page already has TemplateData. [8]
  • The TemplateData table now tells you if a template doesn't take any parameters. [9]

Meetings

  • You can read the notes from the last meeting with the VisualEditor team.
  • You can join the next weekly meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The meeting will be on March 4 at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
  • You can join technical meetings in France and Mexico this year. You will be able to ask for help if you can't pay yourself. [10]

You reverted edits by User:Dcmunro50 on Roddy Munro, but looking at his edits and the name of one of the children he added, it looks like he is Roddy Munro's son. @Beatpoet: The policy is that they still need to cite a reliable source. Being a family member doesn't cut it - it constitutes original research, and anyways, anyone can just create an account and claim to be a family member. --I am k6ka Talk to me! Flagged?

I am not sure. I just want to put our correct company info out there before someone takes it upon themselves to claim our company on Wiki and post incorrect info that we then need to dispute. I was told by a Wiki person who flagged me that individuals can post any unvetted info as long as "neutral" but anything from a company is considered "promotional" - I would expect that you should be able to list the name of the company and town/state but apparently that is promotional? I don't see what about it is promotional - it is the name of the company. Wouldn't accurate founding info from the company be desired over a random post by an outsider? @Rolandselectric: The reason why you're being flagged as promotional is your username. We don't allow the name of a company, organization, or group as a username. We require that usernames identify a single individual - we do allow usernames that include a company name as long as it is clear that the account belongs to one person, and one person only (no shared accounts). For example, "Examples Industries" would not be an acceptable username, but "John Doe at Examples Industries" is permitted.
Secondly, regarding your draft article in your sandbox, I would strongly advise you to see WP:Your first article, which will tell you everything you need to know regarding article creation on Wikipedia. Specifically, while we don't forbid it, we discourage people from creating autobiographies or articles on subjects they are closely affiliated with, like your workplace.   • K6ka, pardon the intrusion. @Rolandselectric: I've tried to link you to relevant guideline and policy. While it is possible for a person who is closely affiliated with a subject to write about that subject, it is difficult and fraught with problems. It is hard for a person closely associated with an organization to be unbiased about it. With respect, you showed that in the initial form of User:Rolandselectric/sandbox, using language that was promotional. The language of that sandbox is now neutral, but there are open questions remaining regarding notability of the company. I've pointed you to the notability guideline for companies already. Is your company notable? From that guideline "A company ... is notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in secondary sources. Such sources must be reliable, and independent of the subject. A single independent source is almost never sufficient for demonstrating the notability of an organization." We base the prose of our articles here largely on what appears in secondary sources. You are a primary source. What you have written so far is verifiable. But, going further beyond that is going to require support from secondary sources. The only secondary source that I've found (so far) regarding your company has to do with a food drive launched last fall, and there's precious little information about the company on the article [12], and really nothing beyond what you've already written. This article by itself isn't enough to support notability. Looking through links on the web, all I'm finding is really business description/listings. Maybe you know more. In reply to "Wouldn't accurate founding info from the company be desired over a random post by an outsider?"; this goes again to secondary sources and verifiability. Whether something is true or not is not what we are after; we are after whether it is verifiable. Quoting Wikipedia:Verifiability; "[Wikipedia's] content is determined by previously published information rather than the beliefs or experiences of its editors. Even if you're sure something is true, it must be verifiable before you can add it." You have ample experience with the company, I grant. But, we have to be able to verify through published sources. Recent changes

  • You can now create books on almost all wikis. It doesn't work yet on wikis using the language converter. [13] [14]
  • VisualEditor had problems with categories in Safari. It sometimes moved or removed the categories. The issue is now fixed. [15] [16] [17]

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since March 4. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from March 10. It will be on all Wikipedias from March 11 (calendar).
  • In VisualEditor the "Edit beta" button is now called "Edit" on the English Wikipedia. [18] [19]
  • The feedback tool in VisualEditor now looks like the other tools. It also asks for information about your browser to help fix bugs. [20] [21]
  • You now see the VisualEditor toolbar even if the rest of the page is still loading. [22] [23]
  • You now see more information when you edit a link, a reference or other items in VisualEditor. You also see a clearer edit button in those tools. [24] [25]
  • If you use the ContentTranslation tool you now see red links in the list of articles in other languages. The link is red if the article doesn't exist in the language of your options or of your browser. You can translate the article by clicking on the red link.

  • You can join the next weekly meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The meeting will be on March 11 at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.

@Caliburn: Yeah, it's been mentioned many times, but I always appreciate it! Anyways, my response would be the same I gave to Xeno and AmaryllisGardener. The mop would be a formidable tool for my anti-vandalism work, but my reason for declining is almost always RFA — some article development and participation at WP:AFD is expected in a candidate, both of which I sadly lack. Recent changes

  • The servers that resize images are using new software. You should report new problems that you notice with images. [29]
  • You can now see lists of bugs about Commons, Wikisource and Wiktionary. [30]
  • It is now easier to add special characters in VisualEditor. You can edit the list of characters for your wiki. [31] [32]

  • Wikis were broken for a few minutes on Thursday due to a code error.

  • A puzzle piece icon (icon) now shows hidden templates in VisualEditor. You can edit the template by clicking the icon. For example, you can now edit anchor templates. [33] [34]

Changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since March 18. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from March 24. It will be on all Wikipedias from March 25 (calendar).
  • The text of a reference is now more visible when you click on it. It has a blue background. Many wikis already have the blue color. Those wikis can now remove it from their CSS page. [41]
  • VisualEditor is now much faster. For many users it is now at least as fast as the wikitext editor. [42] [43] [44]
  • When you add a list of references in VisualEditor, you now see it right away. You can still change its group by editing it. [45]

@Ginodog: Firstly, go over the username policy to see what usernames are acceptable and what aren't. In your case, the username you want to change to is not permissible because it is similar to the subject you're writing about, and Wikipedia does not permit such usernames. If you are trying to create an article, see WP:YFA. Once you have decided what username you want to be, go to WP:Changing username. --I am k6ka Talk to me! Deletion tagging

@Outdrejas: A better question would be "Why are you repeatedly reinserting the deletion tag when it is not allowed?" Even if the issue in the article is resolved, it is up to someone else to decide to remove the tag or not, not the author of the page. --I am k6ka Talk to me!   • You could see a serious bug when editing some templates with VisualEditor. It was fixed quickly. [52]
