Unblock request

User:Jllproductions, whom you rightly blocked for having a spam username (he'd tried to create an article on a company of the same name) has requested an unblock, and, after a few rounds of discussion, seems to have adequately understood (or, at least, expressed an understanding) of the problems of spamming and promised not to do it anymore. IP at Nina Rosenwald

Just ran into an edit conflict with you there. I hadn't thought of the possibility this was more than one person. I have to laugh at the accusation I've been edit warring - that was what I was responding to when we had the edit conflict. This IP is pretty obviously and openly(changing to appears to me to be, see below) anti-Muslim. Hopefully know he/she/they has managed to get attract enough attention. The IP has posted to my talk page saying that my post above is libel and that he is "not anti-Muslim and you have no basis for making such a claim." It could be that appearances are deceiving and he is not anti-Muslim, so I will revise my statement to say that he "appears to me to be anti-Muslim." Someone's offered evidence that sounds to me like it's pretty damning, but the evidence was oversighted after it was offered. Citations in New York NR articles

Perhaps you've seen the latest discussion about NRIS-only stubs at WT:NRHP, which has led to the creation of pages such as User:Dudemanfellabra/NRISOnly. I'm currently going through the "Articles with only one source that is not NRIS" section, marking things that have a badly formatted NRIS citation and removing entries that are sourced to something else. Among the latter category are many of your New York articles such as United States Post Office (Granville, New York), which have "just one source" because they're written from the nominations. Of course I'm not complaining that you're using the nominations! I'm simply coming here to ask if you could go through your New York creations and add NRIS citations (or New York SHPO citations, if applicable) to the infoboxes, since the nomination form doesn't mention the property's reference number or the date when it was added to the Register. Possible IP block?

Hi! In September you'd blocked the ip 107.210.111.166 for 24 hours for vandalism. The same person appears to be back it again and while I think I've cleaned up all but the latest mess they made today, would it be possible to get another block applied so at least they'll be stopped again for a bit? Request for account to be renamed

Hi Daniel. I recently listed User:BlackBab00nHamilton at the UAA noticeboard with the suggestion that the account should be renamed per WP:BLPABUSE, as the username is a racial attack against Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton. However HBC AIV helperbot7 removed the listing because the account has already been blocked. I'm assuming that if I relist the account at UAA, the bot will just remove it again, so I thought I would approach you directly, as you appear to be active at the UAA holding pen. Thanks. Non-violation of Vantage Production Ltd

Hi,

I've just spotted at WP:UAA you've not blocked, for example, "Vantage Production Ltd". Surely that account is either misleading due to it not being controlled by a company, or it is controlled by a company and therefore afoul of our rules about accounts only being for one user? I can see a few cases where you've declined to block in similar circumstances, and I don't understand the logic for letting them lie when, for example, "Juiceentertainment" has just been blocked on these grounds.

Hey Daniel, I was thinking that User: Shoka1234 deserves a longer block due to this comment, the user was blocked for personal attacks and harassment before, and frankly the user frequently violates WP:V and probably deserved a longer block then 12 hours from the beginning. UAA issue

Since I've talked with you in the past about the UAA list, I thought I'd turn to you in this case. Another admin was clearing out the UAA list and removed two (1 and 2) [potentially] offensive names because of their lack of edits. I've not seen any other admin have this policy, nor is it mentioned anywhere in the guidelines or on TW. I understand why we have this policy for promo names, but it seems unreasonable to patently disregard offensive usernames because of their lack of edits. Indeed, I've seen many usernames be hard blocked for offensiveness without any edits. As I've explained to the admin, my issue is not with the ruling of offensiveness, it's the removal of the names due to lack of edits (instead of a UAA|no and it being left on the board for others to see and possible discuss). Daniel, please could you investigate this disruptive user who persistently puts unsourced / unhelpful material about "Alvin and the Chipmunks" into articles about songs. You previously issued a block against the user, but whenever the anonymous IP user is blocked, he or she just comes back again under a different IP address.

Over a sustained long period of time, the amount of disruption that he or she has caused to articles is huge.

But the problem is that he or she continually does this under different IP addresses and evades blocks in this way.

I don't think that information comes directly under WP:NOTTRAVEL, at least not based on the examples given there (putting in the MTA's phone number or URL and telling people to call for information would be closer to what I think that's intended to exclude). In any invent I didn't phrase it as a direct how-to for that reason, as well.

But I think that how the two railroads—including the one whose train did not derail—responded to the accident in terms of guaranteeing service to their riders is useful information, for comparison purposes if nothing else should something similar happen in the future. We did, after all, find Sandy's effect on the city's transportation network notable enough to have a section on (and that's sort of how that section of the derailment article should read once this is all safely in the past). Although it may not come under WP:NOTTRAVEL, saying "The next day, the first regular business day back from the Thanksgiving holiday, it restored limited service as far south as Yonkers, three stations north of where the derailment occurred. From there riders were advised to take a shuttle bus to the Van Cortlandt Park—242nd Street subway station, the northern terminus of the 1 service into Manhattan and Penn Station, where they could take the 42nd Street Shuttle to Grand Central, the usual southern terminus of the Hudson Line," is basically answering the question "How do you get from Yonkers to Penn Station on the day after the crash?"

These can be interpreted by some as travel directions for the commute on Monday, and they were not under WP:NOTTRAVEL because you added that text today. By contrast, Sandy's effects on transport were just that—effects on transport. So, your text was not exactly travel directions; however, they sounded like they were. You got it. If I had written that as more of an explicit how-to, as something like "travelers can take a shuttle bus from Yonkers to ...", then it would fall afoul of NOTTRAVEL. A description of a process can sometimes be read as instructive (See French press#Preparation, for instance—you could derive instructions for how to make coffee that way just from that section. A disruptive user

User DVdm has reverted at least 20 of my 60 or more edits without cause. He has done it twice now despite a normal warning from me, from my talk page, user Speling12345. Each of his 20 or so edits is listed under 'm' for minor. A special counter at DVdm's talk page brags about being vandalized 83 times, so perhaps user DVdm is a consistent problem case on Wikipedia. Hello Daniel, I reported this username few days back and you did comment that it "maybe" an exceptional case of "Mark at Alcoy". This report hung on there for like two or three days and it was removed with an edit summary "No immediate admin action needed".I expected Admin action there though. I am well aware of WP:ISU and I place WP:UCS over any other guidelines. Is Mark allowed to add spam links about Alcoy, just because his username has "Mark" in it?Had his username been "Alcoy Inc", he would have been blocked immediately. DO we expect helpful contribution from Mark? or Dipanjan in this case?? I don't think so... This username is here just for promotion regardless of their prefix or suffix. Using common sense is also an "accepted guideline" at Wikipedia. Sooner or later this guy will come again and will add spam links to the article, he has been doing so and we can't block him cuz he falls under "Mark at Alcoy" exception. It really is a multinational company with a quarter billion euros a year in sales [3], so it's not surprising. The problem is that when you are doing a dab, you are looking at the contents of the dab page. So adding a picture in an article does not help in that case. If I'm not able to find something that I think could be right, I'll mark it as needing disambiguation. However that cleanup list is backlogged to June 2011 now that October 2008 (yep I have the right year) was just completed. I guess my comment about where help would work is on the dab page. Something to make the dab page pop other links. In thinking about what you have said, I wonder if public space is the most common of these and should be listed at the top. Pitkin County

The most basic issue is that the massive pile of citations actually runs the risk of taking the documentation away from the official standards. Barring errors such as typos, data in NRIS are the standards, and any conflicts between the old listing pages are the results of documentation updates/status changes/etc. by the NPS. This is the whole reason that we have the citation at the top of the table (citation #4 as of the diff in question), since it's the source for everything in the column. Everything in these tables is supposed to be derived from NRIS, except for things presented with citations to other sources: names (which don't use en-dashes, by the way), listing dates, verbal locations, coordinates, and cities are all solely dependent on NRIS and mustn't be changed unless we find an error or unless we provide alternate documentation, e.g. some other source gives the location of a site that's restricted by NPS. A repeat vandal

Hi Daniel – you blocked 78.32.196.49 for 48 hours yesterday. It's a repeat vandal with an identifiable editing pattern, mostly using dynamic BT addresses, which he will come back to if the block is short (see 86.157.182.246 for instance). He's been around since at least last October and I've been issuing month-long blocks when I catch him on BT to avoid this behaviour (e.g. 86.147.44.132) – I think the same should be done for this Entanet address (possibly longer as it may well be a fixed IP). Block of User:Beastra

(Note: I'd drafted this before I'd seen Daniel's note above that he will be away for a week. I'm posting it anyway in case he has a chance to see it, or so that he'll see it when he comes back, or perhaps someone else will comment.)

On skimming the requests-for-unblock category I came across the request by Beastra. You blocked this account for "spamming" back in September. I've checked the contributions (there are no deleted contributions) and as far as I can see on-wiki, the "spamming" consisted of one edit. In that edit, the user added a link to the BLP of a notable but lesser-known writer, linking to an interview of that writer contained in the editor's personal blog.

Unless I have missed something, I am not sure that this edit is fairly categorized as "spam." We obviously don't want editors whose purpose on-wiki is to add or spam links to their own sites, but the linked blog post was an interview with the BLP subject herself. The link was a useful contribution to the article especially given that all of the other sources were several years old. I am not certain that adding this single link to the article constituted a policy violation. While it might have been better practice to propose the link on the talkpage, this is a lesser-trafficked article and there can be no assurance that such a suggestion would have received a timely response.

More importantly, the single "spam" edit was the user's very first edit. There was no reason to assume that she was familiar with our policies concerning spamming or COI editing. After Xlinkbot reverted the link (presumably because of "Wordpress" in the URL) and advised the editor of the relevant policy and guideline pages, she did not add the link again or do anything else inappropriate. (In fact, she didn't make any other edits at all.) I appreciate that you are active in protecting the project from nuisances and threats such as spammers, but based on this very limited history I would not have blocked.

In any event, the user has now posted an unblock request and, in response to Jpgordon's initial unblock denial, has confirmed that she will not add further cites to her personal blog. Regarding Sherri Rasmussen

1. I don't agree with the first change, but if MOS says it I don't care enough to go to war with it. ;)
2. Your second change, I understand. I figured that was why it was the way it was in the first place, but I went with my gut and "fixed" it. From here, the article is out of my hands, and there wasn't much to even do with it in the first place. All I tried to do was spruce it up a bit and possibly help give assurance that it might be ready for GA at the least by this point, but others more knowledgeable are more than welcome to improve on it if I couldn't. By the way, do you think I went a bit overboard with my request to fix anything whose meaning I might have accidentally changed by trying to make something coherent out of it? Adding items to NRHP list

Hi, I was just doing some work on NRHP lists and notice sometimes you add new listings to them. Specifically I noticed your edit to Orange County, New York, a while back. Looking through your contributions, it seems the most recently you've done any work with NRHP lists is March, so I assume you still occasionally do that. The reason for this comment is to alert you to a script that exists to make renumbering jobs such as the one in your diff above automated. If you install the script User:Dudemanfellabra/ReorderNRHPlist.js into your JavaScript, it will add a button at the top of any NRHP list to click to renumber it. You can add a new item with any |pos= parameter you want or even leave it blank, then save the page, click the button, and the script does the renumbering for you. Hi Daniel, I previously asked a question about 1RR on abortion related pages that I'm still not clear on. The question involves conduct policy, after the initial revert, with respect to further general editing on that same page. For example, If I revert the contribution of an editor, and then that revert is later reverted by another editor, and then I don’t touch it again, I leave that editor’s contribution exactly as is, but within that same 24 hour period, I edit content from another uninvolved editor, is that a violation of the 1RR? Since TheLittleDuke (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) got blocked, he has been engaging with people pretty civilly on his talk page. He has retracted the legal threats (on-Wiki retraction, deleted of tweets from Twitter) and is willing to accept mentoring.

Do you think an unblock is in order, either with the current restrictions or additional restrictions? Hi Daniel. Sorry, but I feel obliged to disagree strongly with you on this one - the fact that the (clearly intentional) insult had gone undetected for almost a year doesn't in any way excuse it. A username that is a direct insult towards a specific editor is simply not permissable, and given that this user began their editing career by reverting Bidgee and consequently engaged in slow but persistent wiki-hounding makes a coincidental spelling anomaly ridiculous. Normally I wouldn't block an account when another administrator had already deemed the name acceptable, but in this instance, I really don't think it can be allowed to stand. Alt account question

@EvergreenFir: Hmm. A number of admins have alt accounts without admin privileges (see User:Delldot on a public computer) for when they don't feel they can edit securely. Even though you're not an admin, though, I think you might have justification for tech reasons. Hammond House/Wiknyc

Hi again Daniel,

I was glad to meet you last weekend at the Wiknyc. I recalled reading about the Hammond House, but I couldn't seem to recall what I did read. Looking back on it, I'm now rather interested, because you wrote that it was in Eastview, a once-hamlet that I wrote the article for, largely because I didn't exactly know what Eastview was before I started researching it. Most people just know of the area as "Eastview" and don't know anything about what it really was. Anyway, I wanted to mention that the Hammond House article is conflicting in its location; it seems to indicate that it's in Eastview as well as in nearby Hawthorne (it's mentioned on the Hawthorne article as well). I would consider moving the article to Hammond House (Eastview, New York) for accuracy; it appears to be much closer to where Eastview was/is. Also, I should ask - the house is less than ten minutes' drive from my own; would you like me to take more exterior photos? This season's probably better for it too. As well, would you perhaps mind helping with my Briarcliff article and/or its FA review?

Serial IP-hopping genre warrior back from block

See this ANI for the background info. Current IP is 90.196.3.222. I've also reported them at AIV, but apparently, no one has seen the report yet. I noticed you were online, and they're at high-speed repeating the edits that got them blocked last time around. Any chance you can block them? AddWittyNameHere (talk) 18:10, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

In the mean time, I have also discovered an SPI related to them (here (SPI going back to 2011, mentions of the issue being at least a year older than that). For link between the two, see block-log of User:90.195.176.24) and believe that beyond just contacting their ISP, it's high-time for a formal community ban so that their edits can at least be rolled back on sight. Unfortunately, while highly recognizable for people who have dealt with them or read back on them (I fall into the latter category, or rather, remembered them from the ANI report last week), their edits are just that hair-breadth short of blatant enough that I feel uncomfortable doing so without a formal ban. It has been done before in the case of the German reference desk troll (LTA-report here). Might have been other cases, as well, but that's the one I know of from top of my head.

In any case, a ban is not on the account or IP used, but rather on the individual behind them. I see no reason why this would be different for an IP-only editor, even an IP-editor using dozens of IPs. The behaviour certainly is obvious enough that they're rather recognizable--more so than a fair few other community-banned individuals, I dare say, so the risk of collateral damage doesn't seem to be any higher than with the average banned individual with an attached username.AddWittyNameHere (talk) 18:56, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

Bot reports at AIV

Hi Daniel, I've noticed you from time to time decline AIV reports from Mr.Z-bot. This report I believe is not about the content changed, but rather the edit summary, see Special:AbuseFilter/523. Apparently the edit summary is linked to spambots. I have no idea what the intent is here, especially when the edits, just as you say, seem perfectly innocent. I also don't know why it's labeled as "page creation spammer". Perhaps Materialscientist can shed some light on this?

Frankly, I'm not sure about many of these filters... the logic is handled at User:Mr.Z-bot/filters.js, so clearly someone believes immediate administrative action is needed or else they wouldn't have been added to the list. From the looks of it, the list is seldom changed, and perhaps not well monitored. I thought maybe we could make note of questionable reports, and bring it to the attention of the filter's author if we believe it is a false positive.

my name change

Hi - you'd asked me on my talk page whether my name was actually Phil Kessel (and sort of intimated i was 'dodging' a question about my identity). So you know, I wasn't dodging anything...I (1) had misunderstood the wiki policy re using a pubic figure's name; and (2) hadn't realized anyone seriously thought i was phil kessel (either the hockey player or otherwise). In hindsight, obviously it was really stupid to sign up under that name - but i had no bad intent. Someone came and explained on my page i was going against the wiki policy and should change my name - which I've done (it wasn't my intention to cause problems). but you'd mentioned something about my account being blocked and i wanted to make sure i wasn't doing anything to make that happen. SPI vs AIV

Hi DC, I respectfully disagree with this sort of response to AIV requests because it needlessly adds more steps to the anti-vandal process, which is already tedious. Though I understand your point, I disagree with the rationale; the sock operator *is* an obvious vandal with a history of pernicious edits, including elaborate hoax creation and repeated submission of plagiarized content. I could just as easily argue for and achieve a "Duck" block at SPI as I could at AIV, only it would take several days to get any action because SPI is backlogged. In this time, the sock would continue his disruptive nonsense. Anyhow, not trying to browbeat ya or be disrespectful, because you've certainly helped me out quickly many a time and I'm grateful for that, only asking for you to wax reminiscent about the hoops we non-admins sometimes have to jump through to get the job done. The first link says "Usernames that unambiguously represent the name of a company, group, institution or product" which in this case the name is of an official of the museum rather than the museums name. It also goes on to say "A user who both adopts a promotional username and also engages in inappropriately promotional behaviors in articles about the company, group, or product, can be blocked." but they weren't making promotional edits. In the second link the entire sentence is relevant. As the user was not exhibiting "inappropriately promotional behaviors" it would have been better to discuss before blocking. Curious about blocked user name

Hello — Recently I reverted some vandalism from this user. A while later, you blocked that user for vandalism and for having an inappropriate user name. I hope you'll pardon my ignorance, but may I ask why that user name was thought to be improper? Since it doesn't seem to attack or threaten anyone, or impersonate another individual, or suggest use by a company or group, all I could guess was that it's an offensive local idiom. Google is usually good at revealing the latest slang — there is always some teenage Web user, somewhere, eager to etch their latest language inventions in stone by adding it to an online list — but Google turned up nothing more relevant than this. My apologies if this puts you in an awkward or embarrassing position, but could I buy a clue as to the (approximate) nature of the offense? UAA Holding Pen question

Had a questions about the Holding Pen, as the subject line indicates and figured you'd be the best person to ask (you're one of the, if not the, most active admins at UAA, after all): the Holding Pen guidelines indicates "please remove any users that are blocked, renamed, or have done nothing for over seven days" (emphasis mine), yet this does not seem to happen all that frequently. I'd happily help in cleaning out those cases (most of them of the 'wait until user edits' kind, where well over a week later, the user still hasn't), but I'd first like to make sure if 1. the guideline is still correct on this and 2. if there are any issues with a non-administrator removing them. I see you have just issued a 72-hour block to JHUbal27 for disruptive editing. Maybe it's pointless now, but the same editor "attempted" to post this vulgar message . I say "attempted" because it was a pretty bad machine translation basically titled "Suck my d*ck" which goes on to make various racist comments about Japanese people. This was done in response to my undoing some questionable edits he made to the page Frankie Grande. My guess is that he looked through my userboxes, saw that I speak Japanese, and felt posting in "Japanese" would be more hurtful as well as less likely to be seen as personal attack. On the surface, this kind of thing is laughable: a complete fail. At a deeper level, however, it is really kind of disturbing, especially since this editor is apparently only a high school student. They actually had to go through multiple steps—look through my userboxes, think of something nasty to say, find an online translator to translate it—before posting their "message" on my talk page. Not sure if this would or even should have any bearing on the duration of this block; It is apparent, however, that a previous block seems to have had no effect upon their behavior. It also is apparent that they no longer have any qualms about esclalating things to the next level. I apologize if it is inappropriate for me to post this stuff here. You seem to have blocked User:Rakesh.de as a promotional user name account. What he seems to have actually done is written an unsourced but not promotional page about a high school. I don;t see any promotional edits. I don;t see how the account's name is a corporate name or otherwise inappropriate -- it's not the name of that high school. I assume this was an error? it deems to be a personal website which redirects to another personal website, without any significant content except a display of various flags. Thee may be reason to block such names, but I do not see how it is promotional, let alone, inherently promotional. (many may be, but sometimes it would seem to me that people may simply use these as their working web name.). I don't work with usernames much, and you do, but what you've said doesn't match WP:Username policy section 2.3. . Taconic State Parkway Map

I noticed that the map of the Taconic State Parkway is slightly too long to the south. The highway ends at the last bend to the south (Kensico Dam), but the map makes it look like the route ends at the Cross Westchester Expressway. Its a minor issue since the red line is wrong by only a few miles, but it's still an issue. I do not know who can fix the map, but I figured I would notify you about the issue. I assume you have the best possible intentions, but absent a detailed understanding of my situation, I would like to ask you to just closely follow the Wikipedia policies (as quoted in my latest unblock request).

I am a autoconfirmed editor and have absolutely no history of malicious edits, but I see myself unable to improve wiki content from certain locations affected by an IP address block (which should really affect only unregistered users!)

Yes, I can travel to a different location (which is unaffected by this block) every time I want to, for example, post a message on your talk page, but is this really what is desired when you refuse to grant me the unblock (or explain to me how to navigate the unblock request bureaucracy) despite clear policies which say I should be unblocked?

Does it really add value to the world we live in that we engage in this protracted dialog, instead me getting unblocked and being able to help improve Wikipedia immediately when I notice a need for that?

Dear Daniel, why does the blocking message send me to request an unblock from my own talk page, just for you, as an admin, to come later and say that you cannot approve for procedural reasons (wrong process to request unblock), although I am right to be unblocked? You sent me to the ticket system instead – shouldn’t the unblock messages and procedures then be consistent, and send me to the ticket system in the first place?

New York NR nominations

I'm hoping to take a drive up north on Saturday to get some photos in Chautauqua County NY (I don't have any NR photos in the state, which I've not visited this whole millennium), and I'm interested in getting the nominations, but I'm not sure how. For example, if I go to Rorig Bridge and click the nomination link in Internet Explorer, it goes blank, while if I view the same page in Firefox, it complains that it needs me to enable some sort of Java, even though I've updated everything as far as I know.
