Categorization

It looks like courses incorporating Wikipedia used to be categorized up to 2012 but are no longer. I think this is a mistake as an instructor might be interested in seeing other courses being offered and what kind of exercises or assignments are being offered. Is there any list of pages for courses that have gone through this program? I'd be willing to spend the time to organize them but when they are uncategorized, whatever value they could offer readers, editors or educators is lost. If I just haven't been able to uncover such a list or category, I'd appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 21:59, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

@Liz: Wiki Ed supported classes use the Dashboard to create course pages. Changes they make to the class using that interface automatically update an on-wiki version which isn't really used directly, but which do make sense to categorize (the point of having them is, after all, to keep an on-wiki record of the class). Those are the pages you see linked in the course announcements on this page. For the purpose of having other people learn from past course design, you might want to point them to the dashboard directly, though. The "Explore" tab at the top links to current/past courses.
I brought your question up with Sage (Wiki Ed) and ten minutes later he informed me the pages will now be categorized :) Though it may take a little while to update. The categories will all be redlinks at first, of course. --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:56, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Changes to student training and the extension?

@Sage (Wiki Ed) and AKoval (WMF): These are questions regarding {{Course page 2/Header 2}} and student training.

  1. The link for Wikipedia:Training/For_students in the template was changed to dashboard.wikiedu.org on 20:23, 13 January 2016 by Sage (Wiki Ed). I believe the new link is as good as or better than the current one. However, I rely on user contribution on en.wikipedia to see if students complete the three modules. The change came to me when about half of my students completed the training and the other are asked to redo certain modules. Please let me know if there is a way to check if a student complete all the three modules with the new system.
  2. If you click on Special:Enroll/Mahidol_University_International_College/ICCH224_(2015-16/T2) in the template, you will see "The course you tried to enroll for does not exist. See the list of courses." Please let me know if we can fix this issue.

Many thanks. --Taweetham (talk) 03:14, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi Taweetham! Sorry for the surprise changes. Some or most of those sandbox tours stopped working a few months ago, because of changes to the MediaWiki guided tours system. I'm glad you're finding the new ones usable; they're mainly for wikiedu.org courses, but I think they'll be useful for other courses as well.
I'm not sure what is going on with that enroll link, but my suspicion is that it's broken because of the "/" included in the term. Similar things have often been the sources of bugs with the Education Program extension.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:16, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

@Sage (Wiki Ed), AKoval (WMF), and Athikhun.suw:

Thank you very much. I understand that software changes are unavoidable. The enrolment for this term is just finished and I will follow up some students for the missing "interactive tutorials." We hope to work with no surprise next term. I can see that the new training is nicer than the old one and contains compulsory quiz questions. However, I still face my old problem and wish to report it here for further consideration.

Some students ignore the interactive tutorials and complete the whole training in less than ten minutes. I always use Special:Log and Special:Contributions manually to see student contributions and ask them to redo skipped interactive tutorials.

In one extreme case, the time lag between account creation and training completion can be as low as 6 minutes. I think this time analysis warrants further investigation and the future version of the training should try to address this kind of issue.

Setting up a course

Having read through Wikipedia:Training/For educators to find out how to set up a course, at the end it just tells me to come here to enquire how to set up a course. So, how do I set up a course? MHAN2016 (talk) 09:06, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I'd like to help encourage future editors to take on the task of improving and maintaining Wikipedia.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I spend a lot of time welcoming and helping new users, adopting aspiring editors and general maintainance.
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
    Michael Rosen, Pink
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
Firstly by welcoming them on their talkpages, helping steer new article creators towards complying with policies and answering questions from new users.
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
I think the most important way we can help new users is by providing them with the resources to learn about the policies and procedures of contributing to Wikipedia.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
I like to pride myself in the ability to resolve issues, so no.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
Daily for at least two hours.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
By monitoring contributions and ensuring my students fully understood not only the Wikipedia policies regarding Copyright infringement, but their local laws.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
Firstly by removing the violating content, and then by re-educating the student on the polices and laws.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
A Copyright violation is using copyrighted material (images/text etc) on Wikipedia.

I can't disenroll

Hi, I just signed up as an online volonteer for my first time on enwp. I mistakenly pressed "enrollment token" or what ever it is called and I got enrolled. Now I can't disenroll. I go to Special:Disenroll/Queen Mary, University of London/Research Methods (Film) (Spring 2016) and enter a reason and press the button. I get taken to a blank (white) screen. And...nothing. (tJosve05a (c) 01:28, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

@Josve05a: - I'm not sure why it didn't work, but I disenrolled you using my volunteer account, which has admin privileges. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 01:56, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you Ian (Wiki Ed). All I got was a blank page. Over and over again. Nothing odd or off in the console, just "navigating to...", but no error messages at all. Odd. (tJosve05a (c) 01:59, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

‎Pre-production starts for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons tutorial videos

We are excited that pre-production has started for a series of motivational and educational videos that will introduce Wikipedia and some of its sister projects to new contributors.

Over the past several years, many videos have been produced to train new contributors. This series will feature VisualEditor and the new citation tool called Citoid. Additionally, the series will include an introduction to the Wikimedia Commons repository of freely-licensed media.

The video series and associated materials will help students and instructors who participate in the Wikipedia Education Program. The series is also designed to assist the professional staff and volunteers of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs) with understanding how their content gains exposure on Wikimedia sites, and how to document or upload their content for direct viewing on Wikipedia and its sister projects.

The video content will be available in segments that can be viewed, translated, or updated individually.

There are currently volunteer translators for Arabic, Armenian, Czech, German, Greek, Odia, and Spanish. Additional volunteers with high proficiency translation skills are welcome to sign up on the talk page.

We are currently seeking feedback on the outline for the scripts, as well as suggestions for an attractive name for the series. Please leave any comments on this talk page!

Regards,

Pine

Series director and screenwriter

University of Stirling Education Assignments

Hi All - some advice and support would greatly be appreciated. I'm an instructor who has set up assignments for students - "search Wiki Exercise #1 - Screen Time" for more on this. The exercise is the first in a small number of tasks getting the students to engage with editing and markup, collaboration, civility, and so on. The exercises are confined to user talk pages only. The idea is that students will be introoduced to a discrete project on Wikibooks next week, and will be able to get on will tasks there as an educational assessment. I've suggested on the TeaHouse that a compromise to prevent uneccdessary deletions and furtehr problems, that we shift all future work off WP and work exclusively within Wikibooks. Please advise. GregXenon01 (talk) 16:01, 10 February 2016 (UTC)

Hi GregXenon01. Great to see you're teaching with Wikipedia/WikiBooks. I haven't seen many projects taking place on WikiBooks and would be curious to hear how it goes. @FKoudijs (WMF): do you know someone who could provide some feedback/assistance to Greg? --Ryan (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:18, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi GregXenon01. I am not sure what you mean to do on Wikibooks. To be clear, WIkibooks is its own project, with a purpose and scope of its own. It is not a drafting space for Wikipedia. There are best practices for providing learners with drafting spaces on the actual English Wikipedia, using either pages on the User namespace or the Draft namespace, which seem like a better fit. Some more advice on this is here and here. Please clarify your question if you feel I didn't fully understand what you are proposing. FKoudijs (WMF) (talk) 20:20, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi @FKoudijs (WMF): thanks for responding, it's sorted itself out now. Sorry I had somehow missed your response up until now. We responded quite quickly to a number of suggestions from admins and moved the entire portfolio of exercises away from WP and onto Wikibooks - the result of the smaller exercises can be found on user discussion pages. You can see the results of our Wikibooks project, An Internet of Everything? here wikibooks:An Internet of Everything? which I think you'll agree is quite an impressive piece of work, and some of the students have in the process of completing the book, become formidable editors in their own right (and one would hope that they will take these skills to the service of WP one day!). It's all undergoing evaluation at the moment in an assessment period of the next 2 weeks or so. Best, GregXenon01 (talk) 16:58, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Campus Ambassador application: Feynman100

Feynman100 (talk · contribs)

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I recently became extremely interested and passionate about contributing to the free knowledge resources of the internet. Along with being passionate about the prospect of providing free knowledge to everybody, I am a student of philosophy who is looking for opportunities to test my research and academic skills and I feel as if becoming a Wikipedia ambassador will be a great step in practicing my skills as an educator as well as contributing something meaningful to my campus.
  2. Where are you based, and which educational institution(s) do you plan to work with as a Campus Ambassador?
I am based in Gainesville and will be working with the University of Florida.
  3. What is your academic and/or professional background?
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and a Masters of Information Systems Management. I have worked in several startup companies particularly focusing in Market Research and analytics. Currently, I work at the on campus Architecture and Engineering Laboratory where I operate 3D printers, Laser cutters, CNC mills, as well as assist students in preparing their 3D design files for optimum output in a number of our fabrication technologies.
  4. In three sentences or less, summarize your prior experience with Wikimedia projects.
I am currently waiting for a draft of an article that I created on the term 'Radical pluralism' to be reviewed. Besides my article on radical pluralism, I have been using Wikipedia for years and a huge advocate of its use in academia and self studies.
  5. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
A skill that I look up in my greatest idols is the ability to take complex subjects and being able to interpret and explain them in a way which is easily understood. I know that being a Wikipedia Ambassador will allow me the opportunity to practice this skill and allow me to use this ability in a way that educates others and provides an even further means of educating the entire world. I love the prospect of contributing to Wikipedia, as I believe it is an extremely pure and direct form of contributing knowledge to the world. A central concept that I operate on is building upon criticism and self regulation, which aligns with the central theme of Wikipedia which is allowing for criticism in order to create something that is true and reliable. Along with this, I have created good connections with the faculty and staff of the philosophy department on campus and I enjoy interacting with and working with these and other educators. I feel as if making Wikipedia even more relevant on campus and in the classroom will make my University a more cohesive space for learning and research, as well as give Wikipedia even more credibility on campus.

Workshop

(I've been going around with this question for a while now - without definitive answers, I've been asked to write to functionaries-en@lists.wikimedia.org which I've done just now, so no answers from there yet)

I plan to do a outreach workshop to introduce Wikipedia to journalism students, during which 10 participants who will registered users (I've asked them to create accounts before the workshop) are likely to edit from that IP address which is a dynamic one, I have done similar workshops at other places, and am aware that permission can be sought so that the said address may not be blocked, for the duration of the workshop, however this part was done by someone else, I wonder how to go about it? Yogesh Khandke (talk) 02:47, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi Yogesh Khandke. There's no way to stop an IP addressed from being blocked in the future (technically or via a policy). If you know the IP address (or the range is is allocated from), I can tell you if it is blocked. An admin would be able to unblock the address (or allow registered accounts to use it) if that is the case. If they are editing on accounts they've registered beforehand there are a subset of blocks which could impact them. If that's the case you can ask at the admins' noticeboard for help. That's a more active noticeboard and most editors who respond will have the tools to fix the problem immediately. I hope this helps. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:42, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
Adam (Wiki Ed) Thanks, you're right, I believe there will be problems only if there are multiple registrations during the workshop, not otherwise, I'll do a reconnaissance before the workshop to check if there are extant ip blocks, also what do you mean by "if they are editing on accounts they've registered beforehand there are a subset of blocks which could impact them. " Yogesh Khandke (talk) 04:54, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
See WP:HARDBLOCK. The majority of blocks on IP addresses will allow registered editors to work while blocking anonymous or new editors. If your IP address is blocked like that, you won't be impacted. For cases where admins need to stop people who act by registering scokpuppet accounts, they may block all editing, anonymous or logged in. Those are rarer, but they would impact your workshop. appropriate for me to request course rights?

Hello, I'm the coordinator of Wikipedia initiatives for the Harold B. Lee library at BYU. As part of my position I'm trying to encourage instructors to use Wikipedia in their assignments. I found the helpful Wikiedu site. Would it be appropriate for me to have some kind of course rights so I could set up course pages for professors/instructors? Or is there a policy that instructors themselves should do this? I would still like to go through the process of making a course myself so that I can tell others how to do it. Thank you. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 20:41, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Rachel Helps (BYU) - I'd love to talk with you more about your ideas and any instructors you want to support in a Wikipedia project! You don't need any course rights with our new dashboard.wikiedu.org tech support system. Just a Wikipedia username. Please feel free to send me an email at samantha@wikiedu.org and we can set up a call to talk more. Hope to hear from you soon! - Samantha (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:08, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I used to be a student in an education programme once, and now I work as a teaching assistant in a class where an education programme is also implemented. Working as a Wikipedia Ambassador would give me a great opportunity to make an impact offline apart from online contributions which I normally do.
  2. Where are you based, and which educational institution(s) do you plan to work with as a Campus Ambassador?
I am based in Bangkok, Thailand. I plan to work as a Campus Ambassador at Mahidol University. It is where I study and also where I work as teaching assistant.
  3. What is your academic and/or professional background?
I am a fourth year biological science student pursuing a higher degree in anatomy.
  4. In three sentences or less, summarize your prior experience with Wikimedia projects.
I have contributed extensively to anatomy articles on the English Wikipedia. I have also organised meetups and an edit-a-thon in Bangkok.

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I want to work with educators and student editors from Nigeria in the Wikipedia Education Program to improve Wikipedia and its sister's projects.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I've been an active editor for over 1 year and I've created over 500 articles with 5 DYK to my credit. In addition to that, I'm an Outreach Coordinator of The Wikipedia Library. I've also been involved in an Education Outreach Program and currently, I'm the Secretary of the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria (WUGN).
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
Below are articles I created, expanded and promoted to DYK:

I intend to promote Nitrogen dioxide poisoning among others to GA status.

  1. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
supportive, constructive, civil, and respectful. Although, I'm sometimes blunt with spammers per my essay entitled WP:MOSQUITOES.
  2. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
Mentoring, supportive, constructive, civil, and respectful.
  3. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
I have Zero blocked history and I've not been involved in major conflicts with other editors.
  4. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I often spend at least 3 hours editing Wikipedia per day
  5. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
Having understood the legal consequence of Copyright infringement, I will guild them to respect our policy on copyvio. I will introduce them to various tools such as this one. In addition to that, I will often check their contributions on a daily basis.
  6. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
If the added content has not raise a legal issue, I will remove the content immediately on spotted and if its a serious one, I will relay it to our legal team after a dialogue with the concern party (I mean the copyright owner of the work).
  7. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
Copyright violation in my own language is the illegal "Reuse or re-distributions of a non-free content or material"
  8. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I've disclosed my identity to the WMF as Secretary. Of the WUGN and coordinator of The Wikipedia Library but if you required additional information about me, feel free to let me know.

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I have an enormous respect and interest in Wikipedia; since I joined in 2010, I have not only been able to improve articles that are interesting to me, but I have also been exposed to a community of people trying to help the world be a much better place through the free dissemination of knowledge. I have always wished to help improve Wikipedia's standing with the educational community, as I found it frustrating when I was in high school and even here at college when academics dismiss Wikipedia as a poorly sourced, biased source simply because of the nature of its operation, but they fail to understand the immense benefit from having a grass-roots free encyclopedia and what it represents in an era of increased globalization. I want to help others be able to utilize and contribute to Wikipedia to their maximum understanding and desire and help integrate Wikipedia into academic culture, especially here at GWU.
  2. Where are you based, and which educational institution(s) do you plan to work with as a Campus Ambassador?
I am based in Washington, DC, in the Foggy Bottom neighbourhood, where I attend the George Washington University. I would plan to work with GWU and even local secondary schools that are accessible, like the School Without Walls.
  3. What is your academic and/or professional background?
I am senior studying International Affairs in the Elliott School of International Affairs, at the George Washington University. I have been a congressional intern in the U.S. House of Representatives this past academic year (2015-2016) for Rep. Devin Nunes. I am pursuing an internship for the Social Democrat Party in Portugal's Assembly of the Republic for the first half of 2016's summer and an internship for the City of San Jose, California, for the latter half. I graduated high school from the American Intl. School of Lisbon, having attended the Gilroy Early College Academy prior to that.
  4. In three sentences or less, summarize your prior experience with Wikimedia projects.
I have been a Wikipedia editor since 2010, primarily working on articles concerning Portuguese history, architecture, and politics. I have also been a Commons contributor since 2011, primarily uploading images relevant to Portuguese historical figures or buildings. I participated in WikiConference USA 2015 here in Washington last fall, where I presented my topic "Censorship of Wikipedia: Why it's Important and How We Fight It".

Course Co-ordinator user access level

Hi, I am the Wikimedian in Residence at the University of Edinburgh and I have a number of lecturers who would like to make use of the Education Program dashboard to run Wikipedia assignments from as their central hub. Please can you grant me Course Co-ordinator privileges so that I can confer on them Course Instructor privileges. In particular, the school of Divinity (User:caorongjin) and the school of History, Classics & Archaeology (User:Klyszk) are looking to begin these courses next month so would it be possible for someone to look into granting of access levels required as soon as possible? Problem with Article banners (Template:Course assignment)

There is some kind of problem with Article banners (Template:Course assignment). I was adding them to articles my students edited in Education Program:Hanyang University/Collective Intelligence in Practice: Understanding Wikipedia (Spring 2016) and Education Program:Hanyang University/Sociology of Everyday Life (Spring 2016), but the template is locked at the "Spring 2015" assignment, instead of the correct 2016 ( {{Course assignment | course = Education Program:Hanyang University/Collective Intelligence in Practice: Understanding Wikipedia (Spring 2016) | term = Spring 2015}}). The course seems properly defined for 2016, and the only place 2015 appears in the page is in template. This can be adjusted manually, of course, on article's talk pages, but overall seems like a bug someone should look into (if you reply here, please WP:ECHO me back, thank you). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:50, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

Change in userright names

When did the userright "Campus ambassador" get changed to "Campus volunteers"? See Special:CampusVolunteers. Similarly, "Online ambassadors" was changed to Special:OnlineVolunteers. Does anyone know who changed the rights name?

I am curious about documentation for this and who manages it. Blue Rasberry (talk) 01:51, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Looks like this was a global software change. We can re-label them to whatever we want for enwiki (see list of labels). Consideration of how the course/eduprogram pages are actually now being used on the English Wikipedia should be considered. — xaosflux Talk 19:28, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

Course page overwritten?

So I was creating new course pages for my fall classes, and it seems I stumbled upon a bug. I created an entry for my course Sociology of Globalization, but I named it just like one from few years back - "Sociology of Globalization (Fall)". The Education Program wizard didn't give me any warnings or error messages, it just went to my old course page - Education Program:Hanyang University/Sociology of Globalization (Fall), which is of course filled my my former students and such. What's more, it has created a new ID for the course, so now it has two IDs: one listed under former/ended (ID 401) and new one under current (ID 755). Now, there is a delete button, but I am afraid that if I use it, it will delete the historical page, not solving the problem. Seems like a software/database bug whose fixing is beyond me. I hope a WMF/WikiEdu employee or volunteer more familiar with those areas can report it to the bug-squasher team. It may affect other instructors occasionally, through most of them probably lack wiki-expertise to notice it/realize what's wrong. If anyone replies here, please do ping me back. Campus Ambassador application: Cristiano Tomás

Cristiano Tomás (talk · contribs)

Over the 2016 Summer, I interned for the Social Democrat Party in Portugal's Assembly of the Republic for the first half of 2016's summer and at the Portuguese Consulate in Florida for the latter half.
  5. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?

A sandbox that was erroneously submitted to AFC

The content of User:TALett/sandbox refers to a college course. It was submitted to AFC where I found it and removed the submission template with the explanation that this is clearly not a draft article. I hope someone here can assist the user to get the sandbox content moved to the apropriate place. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 10:07, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi Samantha (Wiki Ed), the main user page, User:TALett, contains some more information. Course title and description

The course if Intro to History of Western Civilization. This is an undergraduate survey of the history of Western Civilization to 1714, with particular focus on how specific political, social, cultural developments, beginning with Sumerian civilization, helped to shape ancient Greece, Roman Empire, medieval Europe and the British Isles. To encourage my students to participate in and contribute to global scholarly knowledge dissemination, I have included a Final Wikipedia Project in my syllabus. The goal is to enhance students' critical and intellectual thinking as well as writing, and to deepen their understanding of social media and the responsibilities when participating in it.

Number of students

There will be about 25 students participating in my course's Wikipedia editing/writing article project.

Start and end dates

The course begins on 09/13/2016 and ends 12/18/2016.
